The latest wave of LEGO Dreamzzz introduced this new piece: Part 5276
It’s featured in two sets of the wave. 71480 has two in olive green, and 71485 features a printed version in trans-bright green.
It’s similar in style to the two faceplate molds introduced by the superhero construction figures, but this one has a sharper chin and, most notably, two connection points on the front.
Not long after this part was revealed I started thinking about which kanohi this piece could be adapted into via printing, and a few days ago I threw together a few mockups in about an hour before work, using New Elementary’s photos as a base.
This huna was the first attempt I made. I think the mouthpiece construction came to my mind shortly after I woke up that morning.
I’m not particularly proud of how this one turned out, the shaping is way off from the original mask and the mouth construction would probably need another layer of studs to attatch properly, which would probably make it more prone to breaking off.
I might take another stab at this one later on when I have the physical part on hand but I don’t have high hopes.
However, the slightly bulbous head shape on this one led me to another, much better idea.
I think this is probably the best of all of the ones I’ve made. The print could use a little more detail but I think the shape of the piece itself is pretty perfect for the shelek, with the little cow horns being the only necessary extra attachments.
I’m also really proud of how the melded effect I edited in turned out.
Finally, I tried making a faxon. This was the first idea that had popped into my head, and it and other mahri masks were what people suggested when I initially asked for print ideas a few weeks ago on Twitter.
The elongated shape and top connection point of the original mask are lost here but I still think the look works pretty well.
One problem with this and the shelek is I’m not sure if LEGO is able to print between the two stud connections. The one printed version we have of this piece only has ink on the eyes and forehead area. Fitting a printing pad in a tight angled space like that might not be viable for production lines…
Alright that’s all I’ve got for this post, let me know if you have other ideas for how this piece or some of the other faceplates could be printed/built on!
