Hey all, I wanted to share with y’all some of my favourite pieces of fanart that I have done. I have shared a lot of these on my DeviantArt account, but some, like the Toa Mata design I came up with, I’m not entirely happy with and feel like revisiting at some point (hence Lewa’s exclusion here). I’m pretty sure I don’t need to name any of these characters, they’re all pretty well-known lol.
Turaga Matau was the first BIONICLE piece I had ever designed in my art style, so he looks a little rough in comparison to the rest which refined the art style. I was also going through a bit of an artist block at the time I designed him, so there were a few moments of “do I like this enough to continue or do I screw it up and throw it in the bin?” I ultimately kept it and have since built the rest of these pieces around it.
You may also notice highlights located only in specific places. I wanted to find a way to make some of the more unique items specific to certain characters and species stand out, such as their weapons/tools and their Kanohi (especially their Kanohi, given their prominence within the universe), so I made them kinda “shiny”.
I took inspirations from both the MNOG designs and the film trilogy designs, as well as the sets themselves, merging them with my art style to create what you see here. I hope you enjoy.
Almost. Derrick J. Wyatt’s art style was definitely a pretty big inspiration for me growing up, but I also took inspiration from Jeff Matsuda’s art in The Batman and the art style from the original Ben 10.
While a lot of their art looks very similar to each other, there are still quite a few subtle differences between them all, and I do a few things different to them too, but I suppose at first glance it does look that way haha.
There’s one massive giveaway for me which is the circular parts
I can’t remember where, but Derrick once said something about “rounded squares and squared rounds”, essentially none of his drawings have perfect circles anywhere, they’re always quite jagged
Those squared rounds are very prevalent here and were the first thing I noticed about the drawings
Still excellent drawings either way, Lehvak is definitely my favourite
