Not Enough Crabs

It’s time for crab!
and I may have gotten carried away

If any of you haven’t seen it yet, there’s a month long (6/22-7/22) open collab going around known as Time for Crab. The mission is simple:

  1. Build a crab (or crustacean inspired creation).

  2. Post your crab with the tag #timeforcrab

  3. Repeat!

There’s still plenty of time to get a crab in this year, so get to it!

Blue-Banded Marching Crab:

These massive crabs are a frightful menace for any in a dark place, be that in ocean depths, caverns, or a stormy night on the beach. While in the water, their massive legs create sonic boom/shockwave with each step, disorienting any nearby creatures relying on sonar for travel. On land, while it lacks the pressure difference to make the shockwaves, a single crab can sound and feel like an entire army going on a military parade with its stomping. Though it is considered to be non-hostile towards Matoran, it is still advised to give them space.

Designer’s Notes: I had built the claws last year in attempt for my crab build, but at that time couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of it. Mainly due to the claws being made of those motorcycle pullback motors. They made for nice large claws…but they are very large and heavy. But the legs came about when messing with things for my Bio-Cup entry and something finally clicked.

Those legs are poseable. Not with this build due to its weight, but they can move around in all directions. It’s not the most stable connection as it’s relying on the standalone ball joints staying connected to the axels. Which they only like doing if gravity is pulling them down on the axel and nothing else.

Gizmo Crab:

A simple friend for teaching the basics of gear interactions.

Znap Ussal Mimic:

A strange creature that appeared one day in the Matoran Universe. None are sure where they come from and no Makuta has claims to making them. They appear much like the common Ussal Crab but unlike those crabs, the Matoran are uncertain how to work with these false Ussal.

Designer’s Notes: Felt like making a small crab made almost exclusively of Znap parts. Originally, this was going to be a horseshoe crab. A literally horseshoe in this instance, in which you can see some remnants. But then I realized how easily it could look like a basic Ussal, so…

Znap Hermit Crab:

Please give a sword and some microplastics to get a better home.

Sand Skitter Crab:

Fiercely territorial crabs that try to take control of whatever beach they find. Their unusual legs allow them to race along the sands at high speeds or, in emergency situations, bury themselves. They usually try to scare away rivals and other Rahi from their beaches by constantly racing around them in circles and getting in quick snips. As these crabs are proud of their speed, they’ll surrender their territory and other claims to anything that can outrace them. Though most Matoran just launch something at them to scare them off.

Designer’s Notes:* The part of the Roborider wheel launcher that holds the wheels is what’s holding the perpendicular Technic connector in place. Well, that and the hand piece resting partially in the Roborider head. Not the most stable connection, though there’s a bigger threat of the launchers sliding out entirely than the arm/leg assembly falling out. Normally I would go for something more stable but I couldn’t pass up on the shape of this guy.

And that’s it! As always, comments and criticism are welcomed and let me know which crab was your favorite.

Now go build your own crab!

Is that a Znap wheel on the back of the hermit?

Indeed it is!

I did not realize the znap clips were stud compatible, that’s a nice trick to know

These are excellent crabs, I especially favor the znap ussal and gizmo crab, you captured the looks really well while making the build type the center piece

Awesome crustaceans!

This thing is beautiful. I like how the grey bracket on the front actually mimics both eyes and a mouth in addition to looking like the “face” that things like the blue crab have.

@Wekua Well, anti-studs and boat studs, haven’t tried it with regular ones. But you can actually thank Monopoly for that trick. I might have seen it used elsewhere before, but their Lord of the Planets was what came to mind when I was building the hermit crab.

And thanks! Glad you liked them.

@Frogbomb518 And of all the inevitable fates, that one is among the better outcomes. :stuck_out_tongue:

@TheTDChronicler Thanks!

@Minethuselah Thanks! Though those are actually tan, but now that you bring it up as looking grey I can totally see it. I’m still working on the color problem with my photo setup. Starting to collect items to do outdoor shoots at this point as any indoor stuff has proven too problematic.

Oof, my bad. I’m a tad colorblind.

Now realizing that they’re tan makes me like it more, looks exactly like a real crab!

I love these guys!

I don’t think it’s you, it looks grey to me too.
Tan makes more sense though, i really like tan/orange combos.

Hmm… 5/10, needs more crabs.

This is so creative and well-executed! The legs and claws on the Blue-Banded Marching Crab are especially phenomenal parts usage, and they look fantastic. Great work.
