I like to think of it as a predatory mechanism. It spreads shiny fairy glitter on top of the water that makes unsuspecting fairy types think that it’s of their kin, then the Tentacruel suddenly ensnare their prey and drag them deep under water while poisonous enzymes secreted from the mouth start to break apart the fairy type, tenderizing it before it’s ready for consumption.
