I think the issue is that so much of the show was good that I particularly noticed when it wasn’t.

I’ve noticed this show has a few similarities to the Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
-Shawn is very observant, and constantly has his friend, Gus, tagging along side him. (Kinda like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.)
-Shawn constantly has his theories criticized by the police, or that the police think they catch the right suspect, when they don’t. (Kinda like Holmes and Lestrade)
-Shawn is free-lance in his investigations, kinda like how Holmes is free-lance and considered “amateur.”
Those are relatively common tropes of detective fiction, yes. I agree that there’s definitely some Sherlock inspiration in Psych.
