Rebuilding Prototype Makuta

Some months ago an eBay listing was created for a prototype Makuta set that resembles the Miramax film’s Makuta far more than the official set. Going off the pictures, I’ve done my best to recreate it.

While studio has fought against me every step of the way, it’s been really fun figuring out how the chest was build. If you compare the prototype to the movie it’s startlingly accurate, I have no doubt the this was their only point of reference for how to depict Makuta in the movies.

Obviously there are some discrepancies between all these different versions but I imagine there was a very long design process behind Makuta 2003- especially with his legs, as the eBay listing’s images lead me to believe the legs had rahkshi spines for thighs and shins. I’ve opted to try making mine more movie accurate.

I’m also not the first to do this.

Is that waist articulation I see!?! Very ahead of its time for a 2003 prototype.

The official set had the same gear swiveling waist, the most commendable thing about this I think is the fingers

I’ll never forgive LEGO for throwing away such a beautifully menacing build for the thing we got

Well for one the knees in the prototype are too weak. The entire build would collapse when standing up. The Pakari and Vahi were never going to officially be Makuta’s head since its a prototype. Otherwise, the build is awesome.
