The nene (goose in hawaii) attacked my brother once. Geese are no joke, people. They are needlessly aggressive. They will bite you if they catch you. If a nene ever hisses at you, run.

I’m personally unafraid of birds.
Just like with any animal (cat, dog, etc) they aren’t really scary on their own, but it’s when they get aggressive towards you when the instinctual fear starts to kick in.

I’ve never been attacked by birds, so they don’t really scare me.
I’m actually rather fond of most birds, barring vultures, which are just disgusting.

When I was three a group of geese started chasing me at the zoo and trying to peck my legs. Then I was 10 I was walking by a pond and had to fend of a goose with a 6ft. stick. They are sassy in America too.
