Some Revamped Kanohi Ideas.

I hope this is the right category to post this. I have been thinking of making some Bionicle fanfics eventually though I always seem to be too busy to start. Anyways I have thought of some revamped Kanohi powers lately, and I am wondering if these ideas sound balanced enough.

For the mask of elemental energy instead of a one time use it would increase the user’s elemental recharge speed like a noble versions would recharge it twice as fast while the great version would do it five times as fast. So it is not like they can use their elemental powers none stop but I do think it is an improvement.

For the mask of clairvoyance it would work more like a mask of psychometry by needing to touch an object or being and the visions are random. Also if used on themselves they would only get a first person view instead of a third person view like on others so it would be less effective on themselves to a degree to prevent it from being potentially overpowered.

For the Felnas I was thinking of it being activated with energy pulse like blast being used to disrupt a natural power. The other things like only natural powers being affected, it always works with beings with one natural power, and it only works on an active power of beings with many natural powers would be the same. The energy pulse idea is the touch requirement always seemed a bit self destructive since the user would be close to a being’s disrupted power. Plus the energy pulse idea makes it seem like an EMP attack plus it would be less overpowered than just doing it at a distance.

For a mask of undeath while it can still turn a dead user into a undead after death it would have a day to day use. While it stores energy from the user that energy can be used while alive. Specifically if the user is poisoned, none fatally injured, or diseased it can keep them going by using the absorbed life energy making them seem zombie like. The mental sluggishness from absorbed life force would not impact them during combat. It also makes their eyes and heart light dim during this. For a Makuta they can use the mask but only the while alive applications. Specifically it would help them when they get exhausted from making kraata or if they were weakened by light based attacks.

For the Mohtrek that was a bit harder. I thought of it making past records of its user but somebody has done something like that since they believed a regular Kanohi shouldn’t allow time travel since the Vahi can’t do that, which I agree with. I was thinking of adding the stipulation that the duplicates needed more orders to compensate for the lack of drawbacks but I feel this isn’t immoral enough.

Personally I wanted to revamp the Mohtrek since the whole alternate timeline creation upon death aspect never sat well with me. The other idea I had was simply giving it a paradox limit so the user can be injured but never be killed to alter the time stream or create alternate timelines. So fatal injuries would be undone but that duplicate would automatically be sent to the past after this. Personally I think this is how it should have been in canon.

However the idea I chose instead is somewhere in between in a sense. Specifically the temporal duplicates are made from timelines that would never be. So the copies cannot use their Kanohi because the user has made the choice to use it already. When the copies are unsummoned their memories that are not a duplicate of the user’s would be added to the user’s memory. This is due to the copies don’t have a timeline or past to go to. This can be distressing after a fight since while they know their memories are not their own and they can differentiate between them they do feel like they should check themselves for injuries. It can be quite jarring if a copy dies but these memories cannot affect the user during a fight since they would be focusing on the now instead of the past.

I hope these ideas seem interesting and balanced enough, and I would be happy to hear your opinions.

If you ask me, I feel like the Mohtrek is just a mess. It’s an interesting idea, but I think it raises too many questions. Which, to be fair, was probably fine for much of the target audience at the time, but it hardly sits right now. So, it becomes a question of uniqueness versus potential for paradox. Making it a Mask of Cloning feels too generic, while the Mohtrek as-is has too much risk.

With that said, I believe that your second solution is the best:

The one following it just seems too complicated, and the one before it was too simple. Honestly, making the character who wields a Mohtrek a narcissist would have meant that the duplicates would be constantly arguing over who should really be in charge, which seems like drawback enough.

Yeah the Mohtrek always seemed a bit too much with how it worked. While the backstory of its creation is understandable the alternate timeline thing always seemed something more akin to a legendary Kanohi since it literally creates a whole alternate timeline by accident under the right circumstances. So what is your opinion of the other Kanohi ideas I put here?

For the Mask of Elemental Energy, I feel like your version would fit better for a new mask, but that might be because I do like the restoring nature of the existing version of the mask, and feel like it is something characters would realistically invent in-universe. Limiting its stock as in-story could make a drawback–a character could use the mask now, or they could wait for a bigger threat that could arrive in the future.

For the Mask of Clairvoyance, while I do think that this version might be too similar to the Mask of Psychometry, I also acknowledge that it is far less vague and undefined in your version. I do, however, feel like the visions could be vaguely inspired by the being or object that activates a vision–having tangental visions could result in more up-to-interpretation visions, like prophecies.

For the Felnas, I feel like the existing touch requirement is a good flaw for the mask that prevents it from being overused; without, it seems like something a being of such power as Gorast might spam, which would have less-than-optimal results for the other characters and the story. However, with its existing format, it presents a quandary. Does the user activate the mask and risk problems for themself by its activation, or do they try to use another, less risky power that might also be less applicable to the situation?

Overall, some of these definitely seem like steps in the right direction. For the others, I see what you’re going for, but I’m not quite sold on the specifics.

How about for the Felnas there is a middle ground where a single beam is shot and maintained in order to continuously disrupt a power so it can’t be spammed yet it is also out of range of the disrupted power. And for clairvoyance how about it is always limited to a random vision of the future from the target’s perspective if the target is a living being. As for the mask of elemental energy how about instead of increasing the recharge rate it is more like a reusable charge that is always like somewhere between 50-70 percent of the current elemental energy the user has but there is a period of time like an hour or a few hours where the mask can’t be used between uses like the mask of conjuring’s time limit. Though maybe less percentages and less waiting periods could be better. And the user can’t exceed their limit with it.

What about the Hau but instead of shielding someone it gives the user a new yorker accent so they say Hau ya doin

Here’s my hot take (extremely valuable):

the Mohtrek brings a version of you from the past, but rather than transferring damage it transfers knowledge… Incompletely. So at random times throughout his life, Bitil is garnering bits of information he seems to recall, but can’t quite put his finger on. This would be used by the author to make Bitil actually useful to the Brotherhood as a seer of sorts, with his future self desperately trying different methods of communicating information to the past in order to shape the future.

Greg Farshtey be sure to pay me for my clever idea :triumph:

That sounds like an absurdly annoying power. Useful, but you’d always be stuck half remembering fragments of important things. That could make for some really fun storytelling. Mask of Dejavu…

Some of those mask powers need to be consolidated, badly. Clairvoyance and Psychometry are dangerously redundant. Stealth and invisibility, levitation and flight. They’d make sense in a video game if you were leveling up your gear, but in an ongoing story, not as much.

Elda was a silly one that needed to be better. Detects the mask of life, and also nondescript hidden beings nearby. It should just be able to detect something you are trying to find, but it can only work on one thing at a time.
