Under Tuyet’s regime, and as the war with the Makuta reached its climax, the empress unleashed her ultimate weapon. The anathema to the traitors of shadow, Gavla the Toa of light, was the linchpin of a trap that saw the mighty Teridax struck down.
Such was Gavla’s pride at having won the war. She became a symbol of hope and pride amongst her generation of Toa alongside war heroes like Jaller and Kongu. Indeed she was the angel of Metru-Nui…on the outside.
Sphena was a matoran of psyonics transformed into a Toa during the first war with the Makuta. A mighty warrior and tactical fighter, she was sought out by Tuyet for a very particular task. She would become Gavla’s bodyguard.
With her powers over psychic energy, Sphena could keep track of Gavla and her mental state over great distances. She would quickly learn that the Toa of light wore a very thin face over the Avohkii. Prideful and arrogant, Gavla was most cheerful when being praised for her mighty deeds, and was overzealous in proving herself through action. The Toa of light was quick to anger if she felt slighted or ignored. She would not lay a finger on a matoran, but had at one point come to blows with an unamused Toa Nidhiki over a conversation turned bought of insults. To Sphena, her task of protection felt like watching over a newly-forged Matoran.

But, She had been chosen for a reason. She was strong, able to hold back Gavla before she acted too far out of line.
At the same time, Sphena had a simple yet sincere way with words. Combined with her psychic powers gauging the to of light’s mental state, the Toa of psionics would council Gavla. Despite Tuyet’s secret orders of “keeping Gavla in line”, she did grow a fondness for Gavla. And Gavla in turn grew to see Sphena as something she’d not had in ages…a friend.
Yes, the two had their ill moments. Despite her guard being a master of the mental state, Gavla knew figured out just how to tease her and push buttons. And no matter how much she resisted the urge, Sphena had to physically restrain Gavla from outbursts using her psycho-kinesis. This was usually done with her gauntlet, the Psycho-crusher, on a minimum power level. With how rarely she ever used it, Gavla always seemed to come to her senses when she did.
However, as the two spent more time together and fought side by side against the Makuta, the two developed a close trust. Gavla would fight with all the passion in the world, never surrendering unless or abandoning her friend and allies. Sphena in turn would defend Gavla with her life. Her mighty warglaive and Psycho-crusher saw many a Makuta crumpled to shrapnel and the occasional darkhunter sliced in twain.
Ultimately, Gavla’s temper would be cooled and her attitude would gradually begin to truly reflect her splendor. With Sphena’s strong sense of duty and unity, Gavla would seek to be more like her friend. In turn, the stolid Sphena would…cut loose in a way, now engaging Gavla in a light banter from time to time, and relaxing her regimented actions when appropriate. Truly the two became near inseparable.
It was an odd pairing, the angel and her knight. But for all Nidhiki’s doubts, Tuyet saw her little play as a success. For now Tuyet had something over her little protege, someone she could threaten to take away from the Toa of light should it ever come to that…
For the time being though, such an occurrence seemed unlikely. And at the very least, now the angel had a reliable and trusted consort.
At first, I had just wanted to see if I could build a Toa of Psionicc, and then I decided to put some story behind her. Hope you enjoy.
