Tales of Glory and Valour: the Seafarers Main RP Topic

Despite Ari being quite downtrodden just a moment ago, Dolphus’s extremely apparent concern for her, with which he reached out his hand towards her and with which he was so quick to try to reassure her that he didn’t mean to make her feel bad and that he didn’t consider her to be a good-for-nothing brightened up her mood gradually, which clearly reflected in her expression. The kid didn’t despise her, or see her as being lesser than him, despite her rambunctious, unsophisticated and simple minded nature, despite her lack of tact and manners and despite her blunt, and straightforward approach to everything, and it warmed her heart.
When she first encountered Dolphus, she thought that he would be a snobbish, arrogant brat with no regard for others, just like many other kids from rich families, but ever since she talked to him for the first time, he’s been proving her initial assertion completely wrong.

Ultimately, Dolphus had a good heart, no matter how much he tried to hide it under layers of fabricated indifference.

Ari responded to Dolphus’s words with a warm wide smile, completely devoid of the awkwardness and worry that her face had shown not long ago.

“I may not know much, but what I know for sure is that you have a good heart, kid.” She stretched out her arm towards Dolphus and reassuringly patted him on his right shoulder, “Don’t worry, it’s all good. You didn’t hurt me. I know that there are many things I ain’t good at and I can’t change it. I ain’t gonna cry… don’t worry.”

Ari was always very quick to bounce back from moments of sadness, and this time was no exception. The kid said that that he didn’t hate her with complete genuineness, and Ari believed him. Moreover, he was on the verge of tears and she didn’t want him to grieve even more. He’d gone through too many sorrows already and she didn’t want him to be sad because of her.

Finally, she stood up and stretched her back. She turned halfway towards the door, grabbed her hair band from the top of her toolbox and gathered her giant heap of bright red hair into a messy ponytail. She looked back at Dolphus over her shoulder with a determined, reassuring expression.

“Are you ready for that meeting of yours, kid? I think it’s about to begin. I’ll be right there with ya until it’s over.”

In another part of their recently rebuilt ship, Jade was maintaining her low profile. She’d hardly interacted with any of the other crewmembers, and though the streets had taught her to always look out for number one, even she was beginning to go a little stir-crazy. Fortunately, a reprieve soon presented itself, as

someone knocked on the door.
Yet another meeting, Jade thought, then shrugged. It’s worth a try.
Gathering her things, she swept back her cloak and swiftly exited her quarters, heading for the ship’s chart deck.

Dolphus’ pupils increased in diameter in real time.

Being a Gorov was, at least for him, never about direct participation in the machinations of his father, instead being instructed by each instance of his dealings on how to be utterly cruel and uncaring. It ran in his blood; all it needed was refining to make him just as bad as the rest.

But now Ari presented the notion that his heart, the witness to so much wickedness and manipulative misdeeds, was not twisted by the vile and contemptible notions that had shaped his psyche. That deep down, there was some good still present in his intent.

Of course, he had never assumed himself to be lost by any means, or even once considered that all his actions and motivations were driven by impure and selfish reasons. But it was still another thing entirely, in spite of how much he already knew, to have someone who genuinely cared for him make such an affirmation, and even the densest mollusk on the sea floor could tell by his expression the impact her words made on him.

Besides, only one other person had made such a claim about his heart. If y’all don’t know who, bruh

It was less Ari’s words that calmed his mind, or her comforting touch which caused his ribcage to still, but the heart in her chest which seemed to reach through her fingers and spoke directly to his. He blinked his eyes and forced out a sharp nod, swallowing down the urge to cry further. I have to be strong. I have to be strong now.

As she visibly relaxed and rearranged the spiky growth coming off her head into a more presentable form, Dolphus smeared his hand over his eyes to wipe away any remnants of tears. Alexis was going to be there; he had to remain as presentable as possible.

What else… He ran his hand through his hair to make sure it was reasonable. He could feel the weight of his sword; how he ever managed to fall asleep with it still attached was beyond him.

Sword. He glanced down at it. Shoot. It’s been in the sea twice now; I have to start polishing the blade again or it’s going to rust. If the swordmaster was here right now he’d slap the light out of me. How could I be so careless with-

Dolphus looked up at her, both hands over her hair as she adjusted the oversized sail strap-

Hairband, which restrained the fiery might of her crimson scalp carpet. “Uhh… I don’t think there’s-”

“Oh-!” He jolted, walking around Ari and picking up the notebook and quill which Devan had given him. I’ll have to drop these off in my cabin before I head to the chart deck; don’t want anyone happening to…

It wasn’t worth the effort. And yet, he desperately wanted to feel it again.

His wing was halfway unfolded, waiting for him to place the notebook and quill inside it. But instead he stood, staring at the soft grey feathers - they hadn’t seemed very soft before, but they did now - trying to recall what he had felt only a few minutes ago.

I wish I was still asleep. That… That she was still there. That I could feel through it again. Is this what it’s meant to be like?

He ran a finger through the feathers close to the elbow joint. It made the hair on the back of his neck suddenly stand on end. Hurriedly, he ended the overdrawn silence by blurting out “I’m good let’s go” and shoving both notebook and quill inside the bend of his wing and the whole thing back under his cape.

I really hope she wasn’t looking at me.

Or isn’t now.

Why does she have to be so tall all the time?

Ari took a mental note that the empty book apparently belonged to Dolphus. She didnt think of it much and concluded that it must have been something cartography related that he had to carry around due to his job on the crew similar to her toolbox. He must have picked it up after he boarded the ship and Ari went to work on the keel, and accidentally dropped it on her bed when he went into the room.

As Dolphus was messing around with his wing, Ari finished adjusting her attire, returning all of its elements to their places, including the chain around her waist and the two nails that helped hold her hair together. She also slipped the two sets of brass knuckles into one of her numerous pockets. She decided to leave her main weapon in the room, as it was a bit too big and clumsy to carry around at all times, but still, she didn’t like walking around completely unarmed.

While she was checking and adjusting the bandages on her injured hand, Dolphus finally broke the drawn out silence.

Ari nodded and walked towards the door of the cabin. She opened it and was about to pass through when she promptly smashed her forehead into the top of the doorframe with a decently loud thud, followed up by a surprised “Ow!”

Another attempt to go through the door followed immediately and this time Ari didn’t forget to bend down on her way out. She stopped in the corridor, turning back towards Dolphus. She waited for him to show her the way, rubbing her forehead with her hand.

Somehow, she could never get used to the fact that almost all doorframes were too short for her.

Dolphus grabbed the front of his collarbone and held it down as he pulled his neck out from in between his compressed shoulders. Ari seemed to clear it the second time around, but as Dolphus followed after her, his hand still near his throat, he sent a glance at the visibly undamaged frame to determine if it had been dented somehow.

After all, with a head that thick-

I thought I specifically told you to go away and stop being pretentious!

Dolphus stepped towards the room just next to Ari’s, cracking open the door and shoving the quill and the notebook under his pillow. The medicine containers he did not bother to check the existence of; he was kind of in a hurry.

“Right.” He exhaled deeply, trying to prepare himself for the meeting about to take place. Striding past Ari, he began recollecting the atomized particles of his mask, which would undoubtedly be necessary for the decision he was about to make. “This-”

He had barely gotten past Ari before he paused. Nico’s room was silent, and that same nagging feeling he had felt thousands of times before was gnawing at the back of his mind, demanding to be given its due. With a nervous glance at Ari, he cautiously crossed the hall and cracked open the door.

The bed looked like it has never been slept in, but perhaps that was simply Nico’s way. He was a very precise young man, after all, and almost regal in certain ways which Dolphus was not. I guess there’s no cause for concern. He’s likely either in the chart room, or about to be there. Might be on deck, possibly. Yeah.

Shoving that nagging feeling under several layers of naivety, Dolphus closed the door to Nico’s cabin and resumed walking towards the chart deck. “This way.”

Once at the doorway he adjusted his collar and, after a glance over his shoulder to see if Ari was still following, stepped through the frame.

Mako had sat down at one of the chairs, and for the last few minutes, he had been only reflecting on what this meeting could be for. His face was obscured by the dimness of the room, his eyes glittering. He was quiet now, and did not make a noise.

There’s the supposed assassin…

And there is, what I would prefer to be our Captain.
Mako had, in those few minutes, decided for whom would be his pick to lead. At first, no candidates seemed suitable. But now, the choice was obvious. In a time of crisis, Alexis rose to the occasion, and was part of the reason the ship was water bearing so soon.

And then there’s the the other one…
Jade was an anomaly to Mako. It was strange, how she seemed to be nowhere yet seemingly popping up in the most random of places.

He looked up, to see the towering silhouette of Ari and to see the form of Dolphus, who looked seemingly agitated, as if something had gotten under his skin. He shifted slightly, as if to put off the idea that he was watching the two of them, yet his curiosity was not to be denied.
How strange. They walked in simultaneously together, and no one bats an eye?
He continued to observe them, watching for anything that could give a reason as to why these two were now so close.

Dolphus swallowed as he entered.

Mako was clearly eyeing him, or at least it was clear to Dolphus. But what that meant, if he was trying to discern something, if he was staring daggers through him, or if he was literally just looking and nothing else, was entirely unclear. Between the heavy bandages and sullen glare which seemed to permanently accompany them, it was never very easy to tell what Mako was thinking.

Regardless, his eyes barely stopped to study him on their way to Alexis. He quickly reset both his gaze and the angle of his head; his mask was still being pieced together, and it would need to be one of the strongest ones yet.

There was no sign of Rook; had he yet to arrive? Surely he would not abandon the captain vote. It meant the world to him to be captain; his absence would mean Dolphus would be required to either vote for Alexis…

Or do the unthinkable.

Striding to the short end of the table, he took a seat where he knew no one else could sit directly next to him. I wonder if these seats are going to be large enough for Ari. Otherwise she might have to stand during this.

Where’s Nico?

Yes. Definitely agitated. But about what, is another story… Mako eyed him, before stopping, looking at the rest.
Two are missing…I swear I saw Rook somewhere last. And what of the other? Haven’t seen him anywhere.
He shifted again in his seat, a wave of unease washing over him.
Nico, that was his name. There’s not a single trace of him…
Mako drummed his fingers impatiently. The droning noise soon became apparent as he stared at the door, before he stopped. Minute by minute,
he himself was becoming slightly agitated.
The silence was palpable, as Dolphus sat down, and subsequently, soon so did Ari, Mako could barely focus with the impatience that he felt.
He turned his attention towards Dolphus again, cutting the silence short.
“Sleep well?” He asked nonchalantly, his fingers slowly tapping again.
Wonderful. Now, I’m going to bet you 10 that he’ll give you a look like: “I’m going to hang you by the figurehead and leave you out to dry”, thanks to that remark. Good job. Really helps slice the tension.

Dolphus turned towards Mako as if he had never existed before and suddenly materialized out of thin air. He inquired as to the quality of my sleep? When did this knuckle-dragger start caring about-

His mask set resolutely like steel, sharpening his eyes and clearing all fatigue from his face in an instant. There was only one path, one option available to him if Rook did not show; it was unthinkable, yes, but it had to be done, and he would not falter now. Not with Mako, not with Jade or Ari, and definitely not with murder mcstabman who probably had a name that he just hadn’t heard yet.

It was going to take a lot of convincing, but he now knew there was no other choice. It was time for the performance of a lifetime. Although, is a genuine display really a performance, or just an unveiling of the truth?

“Yes, thank you.” He politely responded, giving a slight nod to Mako. “I trust you were able to rest comfortably?”

Karl had entered the chartroom just moments before Dolphus. The table in the center of the room was surrounded (or partially surrounded) by the other members of the crew: Mako, his scarred face hidden in the shadows of the room; Mariner, expressionless behind his armor; Alexis, her expression one of professionalism and others as well. There were other members present, some who Karl had not yet met. He took one of the empty seats at the table, sweeping his cloak over his left shoulder as he did.
I wonder how we’ll start, he thought. This is quite an important matter to warrant the entire crew being present.

Ari followed Dolphus with her eyes as he briefly entered and exited a room next to hers. She concluded that it must have been his cabin.

She also couldn’t help but wonder if Dolphus’s choice to place her in a cabin right next to his own was influenced purely by availability and convenience, or was it perhaps because he wanted to be closer to her?

Nah, that’s stupid. Why would he want that?

Ari watched Dolphus with a hint of concern. If his room was next to hers, then what did all this mean? Whose room was he peeking through right now, and why did he look so worried? Was there something else she didn’t know about this crew?

Concluding that it was probably not important, Ari followed Dolphus towards the chart room. On their way there, she briefly turned towards Dolphus with a slight grin:

“So we’re neighbours, huh?”

Ari entered the room just behind Dolphus, not forgetting to bend down before going through the doorframe. She stopped at the entrance and looked around the dimly lit cabin. It was quite a big bigger than the individual cabins, and in the middle of it, was placed a big table with multiple chairs around it. In several of these chairs sat people that Ari was already familiar with:

She looked over the imposing figure of Mariner, whose presence was just as overwhelming as the day before, the friendly Assassin, the Not-Quite-Captain, the illusive girl from the beach and finally Bandages, whose face was completely obscured by a shadow, all sitting completely silently. The atmosphere in the room was tense to say the least.

There was also a face that wasn’t familiar to Ari. Well, she didn’t actually see his face, it was completely obscured by robes, but the mysterious figure was definitely unfamiliar to her.
She eyed the stranger curiously. There was something strangely unnerving about his presence, and Ari got a strange feeling when she looked at him.

However, Ari’s focus on Tharos was suddenly broken by a strong feeling that she was being secretly watched. She looked around the room and her eyes shifted gradually towards Mako.

He was eyeing her intensely from his corner. Her eyes locked with his, looking at him challengingly. It was clear that he wasn’t wearing his mask anymore, but it was hard for Ari to discern his facial features because of the lighting. She could only tell that something was… off about them. She wondered what might have been wrong with his face, after all, he wore those bandages for a reason.

Finally breaking eye contact with Mako, Ari followed Dolphus towards his seat. She then stood behind him, slightly to his right, with her back against the wall. She did tell him that she was going to be by his side on the meeting, after all. She didn’t take a seat herself because they must have been reserved for the crew members only

Ari’s eyes shot curiously between Dolphus and Mako during their exchange. She saw Dolphus’s face change during it, taking a stone cold, emotionless expression in an instant. She found it extremely unnerving how he could just do that on command. Now he looked like a completely different person from the kid that had been crying his heart out to her not too long ago. This Dolphus was simply incapable of such emotions.

Of course Ari knew that this face was a farce, just a facade, but she had to constantly remind herself that it wasn’t real in order not to be fooled by it.

Ari sighed. He must have learned this trick from his parents. All aristocrats were like that, and everything about Dolphus showed that he was from a rich family: from his small hands and elegant features, to his perfect manners and way of speaking.

So. Now you owe me 10-
His fingers took on autopilot, still tapping silently.

“Decently.”
His eyes still stayed perfectly still. He barely made a sound.
That’s new. Now, he’s… what? Aggravated? Seems likely.

“Still have some pins and needles in my legs.” He said.
That, and being given visions is ridiculously disorienting.

“So, who do you now think is the best for captain?” Mako asked, trying to break the now evident tension on Dolphus’s face.
Wonderful. Now you’ve gone and done it.

Tharos looked up from his cup of wine, and felt a small surge of resentment towards Alexis. He pushed it down however, and falsely sweet inquired. “Good morning Alexis, how was your rest last night?”

Mariner shot him a warning look. Tharos pretended not to notice it.

“I hope you were ready to respond to any magical threats to the ship in the night, seeing as I was out of commission. Lack of rest as a Mage will due that after all.” He took a swig from his cup, wishing immediately he wasn’t in such a bad mood. He had a feeling he might regret his words.

He wasn’t worried about her in the way she wanted him to be, judging by her paltry intimidation on the beach the other day. He knew his Magical power would be quite a match for anything she might throw. His words however, might cause some disruption on the voyage. He had a feeling she may do whatever was in her power to make life uncomfortable for him. Still, he mused, she didn’t have much power over him to begin with. An empty title would change nothing.

Dolphus shrugged. “One contender for the position has not yet arrived. It wouldn’t be proper of me to begin making arguments for or against one side or the other without all parties present.”

There seemed to be some apprehension present in Mako’s mannerisms, or at least it seemed that way to Dolphus. Noting this, he tried to frame his reply in as neutral a manner as possible while still remaining in place.

It was a good thing the mask was in place, or else someone in the room might have noticed him jump out of his skin and look at his face for confirmation. The candied poison dripping off Tharos’ tongue was almost too audacious to have come from the normally unassuming priest, and yet it could have appeared from no one else.

The same superior glance was sent towards Tharos, but behind the nerves and muscle of his face, Dolphus was wide-eyed with shock. It didn’t improve as he continued.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Dolphus sent a quizzical eyebrow raise at Mariner, catching the tail end of the dangerous look he had given Tharos. Evidently something had happened to greatly sour Alexis’ reputation in Tharos’ eyes, something his superior didn’t seem to know about and evidently approved of his attitude towards even less.

Inside, he desperately wanted to jump to Alexis’ defense, but he couldn’t now. He had to remain strong. What needed to happen was such… Well, he didn’t even wanted to consider how bad it would be. That was a problem for middle-of-the-night full-of-remorse crying-his-eyes-out Dolphus, not current Dolphus.

I have to be strong.

“Good enough.” Alexis mused as she propped herself on the back of the chair in front of her, she could faintly smell the wine in tharos’ cup. Strangely she didn’t take him as a fan of alcohol when they first met, much less wine. Maybe after this she could convince him to share the location of where he was hiding it.

Alexis ignored the jab, only offering a small smile in response. “We should consider ourselves lucky we didn’t, we haven’t had the best of luck on the open sea so far.” She paused to let that fact ruminate in the air before continuing. “However it’s seems the crew has handled every challenge we’ve faced so far decently well, I’m confident we would have dealt with it.” That comment wasn’t aimed at Tharos, more a general statement to the crew. In her own way this was a way of congratulating them on the work they had done so far. No matter how she felt personally about each of the crew members the facts that they had gone through much and still remained alive spoke volumes, even if they had lost Nico during the storm.

Nico.

She didn’t know why losing him bothered her so much. she had been asked to keep an eye on them, keep them out of trouble. Losing him meant that she had failed that goal of course but for some odd reason that’s not what bothered her.

it just did.

Alexis straightened again, almost as if a violent shiver had ran through her body, her attention sharpening once again on Tharos, mind racing back to the confrontation they had yesterday. “Tharos, speaking plainly, after this meeting is over I would like to speak to you in private.”

Karl glanced over at the Mage, noting the tone of his words, as they disagreed heavily with Tharos’ behavior the previous day.
What is his intent? Does he too wish to take charge?

So that’s it. He’s trying to make her appear incompetent, Karl’s thoughts continued. He must be disgruntled after that argument on the beach yesterday.

Well, Master Tharos seems to have failed to unnerve her, Karl thought, looking between the two. Despite Tharos’ words, Alexis was yet the master (mistress?) of the conversation, entirely focused on the meeting ahead, he supposed. It’s good to see that she’s confident in the crew. But is that truly her thoughts, or just the words of a leader-to-be?

“Really? I would’ve thought someone of your observance would’ve chosen already.” He said, leaning forwards, his face catching the light for a moment.
His fingers still tapping, and his feet slightly shuffled.

Tharos, what did you do?
Mako followed Dolphus’s gaze towards the fire magician, his eyes narrowing.

Dolphus, dont do anything you’ll regret…

LUCKY?! Dolphus and I nearly drowned, albeit I had help and experience, but HE…
Mako glanced over back to Dolphus-
HE got water in his lungs…TWICE! But, I guess… yes, we have taken the burdens and challenges quite well.

Hopefully, they dont kill each other. His gaze shifted back to Dolphus.
“Anyway, what do you think we’ll be doing next?”

Tharos looked at her closely, trying to determine intent from her words. When he spoke his tone was even and diplomatic. “I will try and find the time.” His fingers began to move idly as he decided his next words.

Without meaning to, he began to go through the Caelin ritual of focus. A snake composed of flames formed around his moving fingers, slithering it’s way around his hand. He seemed quite unaware of this development however, and continued speaking in the same measured tone. “I have prayers, and guidance for the indentured souls of this voyage.”

I wonder.

Dolphus stopped his gaze from landing on Alexis, lest something in her manner influence him in some way. What would have happened if you were the one caught by the squid?

Well that’s totally not ominous in any way whatsoever.

It was clear - to Dolphus, anyhow - that Alexis was trying to both defuse the situation and also make a bit of a show out of it. Her statement seemed to be a promise of her giving Tharos quite the dressing down later, no matter how sweetly or sympathetically it was delivered.

Regardless, this situation could not be allowed to stand much longer. The tension would eventually cause something to break, and he could not allow that just yet. In its own time, perhaps, but not so early before the vote.

“Might we begi-”

Dolphus’ seat made a horrible grinding noise against the floor.

He picked himself up from the diagonal position he had entered, adjusting his collar with all the aristocratic grace and superiority that he could muster, but he could not sneak smoothing down his feathers at the moment. At this point, it would be better if he did not address the snake, lest it be dignified by his mentioning it, but it took quite a bit of effort to hide just how badly that spooked him.

I. Hate. MAGIC.

His eyes traveled towards Mariner, hoping and praying that he had somehow not noticed the awful noise that just occurred from the chair scraping against the floor of the chart deck. The atypical Halinth had been silent this entire time, obviously contemplating something or other, but he was clearly the adult in the room at the moment.

“Sir?”

He had paused for a moment, trying to decide how best - and most respectfully - to address the master of the Caelin’s Hand without coming off as impatient. Let’s hope that reply works…

Hearing this reminded Ari that Alexis had stated the day before that she wanted to talk to her as well. She wondered if that changed overnight or not. If not, what did the woman want from her?

Ari watched the room a silence, with mild frustration clearly showing on her face. She didn’t really follow the conversations that were going on, they didn’t really have much meaning to her, but she could still feel the tone with which those conversations were being held. The exchange between Dolphus and Mako, which was filled with a great deal of hidden contempt, was overshadowed by the one lead by Alexis and the unfamiliar robed figure, whose name was apparently Tharos. Despite their way of speech being quite formal and neutral, the hostility between the two, especially coming from the side of the robed man, was almost palpable.

Ari was reminded why she didn’t want to go to this meeting in the first place. She knew that it would be filled with painfully insincere diplomatic speech and mind games, the things that she couldn’t stand the most. And the meeting didn’t even begin. She felt that it was about to get much worse.

and she could have been doing pushups at this time…

Even though Ari was curious about him at first, now she was kind of happy that this Tharos didn’t acknowledge her presence in the room in any way, seemingly not noticing that she was there. He seemed like a pain to deal with, and that nagging feeling she had about him wasn’t going away.

Soon, Ari realised where that nagging feeling was coming from. She’d known that his robes seemed familiar, and his exchange with Alexis about magic gave it away even more. He was a Caelin.

Ari’s brows lowered at this notion. Of course she knew that this ship, just like every other one, would have a Caelin on it, but she still couldn’t help being unsettled by this one. If she could get past people using magic casually, these priests essentially lived and breathed magic, which made them much less trustworthy in her eyes.

Finally looking away from the robed figure, Ari looked over at Dolphus, after she heard a loud grinding noise coming from his direction. His chair had stopped just a couple inches away from her foot. She couldn’t see his face, but she didn’t need to. She knew immediately what caused him to react in such a way. Her dislike for magic was nothing in comparison to the hatred he seemed to feel towards it.

Well, seeing what said magic could do, she couldn’t blame him.
The image of the marine’s horribly burnt body popped up in her mind. If Not-Quite-Captain could do that, then the Caelin was capable of much worse.

Hearing the words coming in her general direction, she looked over directly at Mako for the first time since she entered the room. She wasn’t the squeamish type, but what she saw made her flinch and do a double take.

Now that she was a bit closer to him and light was falling on his face differently, she could partially discern his disfigured features. She couldn’t help but wonder what could have done this to him, and how he was still alive after having his lips completely removed.

Well, he wore those bandages for a reason…

Ari bent down towards Dolphus, placing her face next to his and pointed a finger at Mako. She was speaking quietly, but not quietly enough not to be heard by the entire room.

Hey. What happened to Bandages’ face? It must have hurt… Are you sure that he’s not a ghost?

She wanted to do anything but stand around watching this meeting, so she immediately clinged onto the first opportunity to distract herself from its suffocating dryness.
