I’ve also played both games at other people’s houses before, and honestly, I couldn’t feel any difference (besides the fact that the Wii U version had a much more comfortable controller for my hands). Seems like a pretty decent game, but nothing that catches my interest that much; the handling of the cars also felt unusual compared to the Mario Karts that I play (Wii, DS, Double Dash, 64). Graphics are really polished and the character selection is huge, especially in the DX version! I despise most of its soundtrack because it uses a lot of saxophone and I hate the sound of that
I don’t think I’ll ever get a Switch - I have my Wii, DS, N64 and that’s enough for me - but if I ever do, it seems basically impossible to not have Mario Kart (every Switch owner I know has that game ).
I’m kinda concerned now.
Me and a bunch of classmates go on a trip with what is like a mixture between parachutes and kites: it attaches to your back, you run a few steps, and it flies by itself. We start on some random field, but quickly reach the ocean. There’s no clouds, but if there were, we’d be above them.
We just glide along for a while, but then there’s a big event: a classmate brought one of these hand-throwing styrofoam model planes, and I brought my camera to film him launching it. We do so, but after a few seconds, the small plane literally gets shot down - alongside some of our people. We don’t know where the shots came from, but we don’t really care to investigate either.
Out trip continues normally, with one person crashing or disappearing from the group every now and then until it’s just me and the plane guy left. Eventually we also go down, but we still reach land and crash in front of a police station in New York.
Instead of questioning what happened to all of our classmates (who literally crashed down in the middle of the ocean), we’re just like “oh cool we arrived” and start looking at my video footage of the plane.
Why I’m kinda concerned is… What makes my brain cook up this? It’s probably one of the dreams I remember most vividly after waking up, I had to write it down because it’s so wack.
There I was, in a shopping mall full of thrift and second-hand stores… when I saw a kiosk selling row upon row of sealed and opened Hero Factory sets (and a Sidorak set). My first instinct is to stop, but alas, for some reason, my mom is there and decides we don’t need to stop at this store. Instead, we stop at a rug store and look for a mirror.
This night was weird.
For some reason, I move to a city with my grandparents. The city is very large and could probably house ca. 100.000 people in its heyday, however most parts have been long abandoned. It looks very industrial, most buildings are built with maroon bricks and there’s many wired metal ornaments and decorations. The place is constantly covered in a thick mist.
When we arrive, there’s just 3 inhabitants left: a young couple that never leaves their apartment, and a man that always walks around the block. He seems completely oblivious to his surroundings; you can talk to him, he doesn’t react, you can stand in his way, he pushes you aside and continues walking. And he walks all day and night.
After moving into our apartment, I also decide to go for a walk, but I have a goal: the beach! I quickly arrive there since the lake isn’t far away. I notice something in the tall grass: a big RC car! From the looks of it, it’s been sitting there for quite a while, but still looks salvageable. I take it home, it’d be a fun repair project.
Back home, I place the car on the living room table and go into the kitchen to drink something. Suddenly, I hear a sizzling sound from the living room alongside the smell of burning rubber. Looking where the sound and smell comes from, I notice that the car’s tires are melting away, forming a black goopy mass that is slowly flowing down the table into a big puddle. There, it’s making louder noises and starts smoking, until it eventually burns a hole into the ground. Looking down into the hole, I see a bright white room. I decide to hop down and check it out.
Down here is a big facility, very bright and clean. There are people in lab coats running all over the place. I decide to ask some of them what this place is, but just like the guy on the street above, they’re completely oblivious to what is happening around them. So I go explore by myself, and I discover that this top secret facility is for… making cartoon movies?! Having a look around, it becomes obvious that this is, in fact, a big studio that secretly produces every 2D animated movie and series there ever was. There are no different animation studious around the world, it all happens here. The government doesn’t want you to know that.
Me being the silly person I am, I start making funny little edits to some of the scripts because again, the workers don’t seem to notice me. Wasn’t long before I woke up, though.
Weird one. I’m on a beach with a friend, and he has a lifesize Uplink mech (the little orange guy from Exo-Force). We came here to dig a hole which will bring us to Canada. My friend is suddenly unsure about our plan and wants to go home, but I’m determined to dig this hole and start doing that. As soon as the hole is roughly 2 meters deep, I hop inside, and boom, I’m teleported away!
I find myself in a forest, walking around until I reach an open spot. There’s a row of garden sheds built up, and several people around them. One guy tells me that there’s about to be a competition for who is able to deconstruct his shed the fastest. The first three to finish will be allowed to go, while those who do not finish fast enough will have to stay in the forest for a few years. He also tells me that we’re in California, not Canada.
Anyhow, I decide to take part in the competition. The game master arrives, briefly explains the rules, then gives us the start sign. Everyone hastily begins disassembling their shed with various tools that are scattered around the place, but I just stand there and don’t know what to do. For some reason, I forgot how screws, nuts and bolts work and feel helpless.
Suddenly, my friend arrives and blasts my shed apart with the weapons on his mech. This means that I’m actually the first person whose shed is gone - there were no rules speaking against rabid destruction, so my win counts! We’re allowed to go out of the forest.
We realize again that we’re stuck in California now while we actually wanted to go to Canada, so we start searching for the nearest airport.
Nightmare fuel right there. California has little to no forest control so fires will break out regularly in just about every part of the state.
Like Wekua said, that was a pretty cohesive plot that sounds like a Boards short story. Also nice to see some appreciation for Uplink, that’s a pretty nifty little set.
This was a wild ride. Like so often, I’m on a flea market again. At one stand, I spot a Sluban cargo train set with a diesel locomotive (something that doesn’t even exist in real life) and an extra wagon set. Instantly, I realize just how much I want to have both sets, so I ask them about the price - 69€ for both. Normally I’d think that’s way too much, but this time, the thought of “want” overshadows everything so I agree to buy it. Then I come to the realization I don’t even have any money with me…
I run home and search for things that I could sell. I find an old carpet that nobody needs anymore, so I take it and dash back to the flea market, quickly setting up my own stand to sell this carpet. Doesn’t take long before someone stops by to take my carpet - but they only give me 68€ for it. Whatever, I think, I’d find a way to make a single euro somewhere.
And so I do - on the way back to the train set seller’s stand, I find a 2€ coin on the floor, leaving me with 70€ total. I’m excited and run back to the seller. Takes a while until I arrive at their stand, and once there, I have to make a painful realization… Someone had bought the sets while I was away. This leaves me absolutely heartbroken.
This dream was such an absurd story.
The world faces a big threat because too much paper is being thrown away, recycling apparently isn’t a thing. The government hosts a challenge where people should come up with a solution for the issue; if it’s good, you’ll get a prize.
Me and a bunch of friends get together and identify the cause of the problem: newspapers! Many people read them once, then directly throw them away. So we task ourselves with replacing newspapers, after a bit of brainstorming we have an idea. Print the news articles… on bread?!
Somehow we work out a way to print news articles inside a loaf of bread. You’d cut off a slice, read the article, then eat it. Next slice has the next article, and so on. Despite just how weird this sounds in concept, we’re hugely successful and many companies want to get a license for our printers. Soon, newspapers are a thing for museums - bread is where it’s at.
This is problematic because of the variations in the thickness of bread slices that people would cut. Sure, it works just dandy on presliced bread, but the uncut stuff you’ve got a problem with.
However, the general idea of sending information hidden on slices of bread is a novel one, and I kind of want to see that implemented somewhere. Not commercially, but maybe in a spy movie of some kind.
