The Beginning of the New Chronicle (LEGO Ideas Project)

Gathered Friends,

Anyone who remembers what LEGO sets looked like in the 90s will surely remember how inventive the LEGO Technic sets released at that time were. The series, which is currently associated with replicas of vehicles known from everyday life, and which is not even considered by many to be a full-fledged LEGO series, in 1998 was about creative solutions that laid the foundations for such iconic ideas as Slizers, Robo Riders, Technic replicas of LEGO Star Wars droids, and finally the legendary BIONICLE - a series that grew to such proportions that, with the right approach to its development, it had the potential to become another, alongside Warhammer, Transformers, Gundam and similar universes, another powerful brand based on collecting figures, which would regularly receive dedicated series of comics, books, games, TV series, and even Hollywood films.

It could be said that due to its huge popularity, BIONICLE was a bridge connecting communities focused around system sets and LEGO Technic fans. The uniqueness of this series consisted of the Technic build of the characters, more mature plot, the mysterious atmosphere, numerous secrets that stimulated the imagination and encouraged fans to create various theories, the collector’s aspect related to the Kanohi Mask recolors and finally the fact that it was a world so vast that each of us could build and place our own heroes and villains in it.

Although the bridge built by the BIONICLE series was later supported by other series such as Hero Factory, the second generation of BIONICLE, or the buildable figures from the Legends of Chima and Star Wars series, they failed to sustain the weight of expectations and with the cancellation of the last series of figures based on the CCBS system, the said bridge ceased to exist.

So I decided that with BIONICLE’s 25th anniversary approaching in 2026, it’s time for someone to design a set to celebrate not only this legendary series, but what it stood for.

That idea gave rise to the project you’re looking at. I decided to construct a diorama that would be a combination of these two extremes: System design and Technic design.

I knew that the most important thing in the whole project would be to design two characters: Toa and Matoran. They had to be made of at least 85% Technic elements, as Technic build is one of the key aspects of BIONICLE’s uniqueness and identity.

The first decision I had to make was to choose an element. I thought that the main 6 elements, especially fire, were too cliched, while the other elements had no representation in official sets. So I went back to 2001 and remembered that it was the only year in which the colors purple and turquoise appeared. Since the latter is currently experiencing its second youth, I decided to build a Toa and a Matoran representing the element of Green. After all, nature has always played an important role in the BIONICLE world.

I wanted my Toa to refer in some way to all the classic Toa builds. So he had to combine the severity of the Toa Mata, the slender figure of the Toa Metru, and the height and articulation that characterized the Toa Inika.

Designing it turned out to be significantly more difficult than the Matoran, as I wanted it to have a functional gearbox, and the lack of armor elements known from G1 significantly hindered my task of coming up with a neat-looking torso and forced me to increase the scale of the build.

Ultimately, the problem was solved by a new type of small Technic panels, which fortunately were produced in a lime variant.

Designing slender-looking limbs was much more difficult, as encasing them with flat liftarms did not provide sufficient structural cohesion and the whole thing fell apart during play with the figure. The fact that no Bionicle limb is produced anymore did not help.

Ultimately, the problem was solved by the 92907 Technic connector, which, thanks to its shape, is able to hold the structure on both sides.

The biggest problem was of course the thing that constitutes the identity of each BIONICLE hero - the mask. No Kanohi are on the list of items remaining in production and there is no chance that any of the classic masks will be brought back for a single LEGO Ideas set. So I decided to design Noble versions of two G1 masks that only appeared in the Great form. I chose Pakari and Arthron. To make them look as solid as the traditional masks, I made them from smooth System bricks, which resulted in slightly awkward heads, which nevertheless do a good job of imitating the G1 style and blending in quite well with the rest of the build.

But for those who don’t like the masks of my design, as a bonus, I also designed alternative heads compatible with all Kanohi from 2001-02, so anyone who has any mask that fits on studs, preferably in lime, turquoise or at least black, can put them on my figures.

With the Matoran I took a slightly different approach - I asked myself: What would a new generation of Matoran look like if they were supported by the technology and cultural influence of the native inhabitants of Spherus Magna, a few decades after the loose ends of BIONICLE story have been resolved?

I imagined the Matoran evolving into new, more agile forms. I knew I wanted them to have bendable knees and elbows, but I wanted to keep the distinctive shape of the 2003 Matoran feet so that my Matoran wouldn’t stray too far from the classic sets in terms of design. After all, in a series with such a well-written storyline, it’s crucial to respect the heritage of the series and maintain its continuity rather than trying to overwrite it. My Matoran was meant to be the next link in the evolution of his race, not a some kind of its reboot.

Ultimately, I think he turned out pretty well. He has an upright posture similar to the 2004 Matoran, but he retains a bit of his island character, and in some ways, he’s more poseable than the 2015 Protectors.

In the case of the diorama, in order to save money, instead of my preferred rectangular base, taking inspiration from the Tallneck from the Horizon Zero Dawn game set, I decided to go with an oval shape. I topped the diorama with tropical vegetation strongly referring to the first three years of BIONICLE story, whose plot took place on a paradise island. I constructed tall palm trees that bend thanks to the use of a long hose as a core, and I covered the ground with lush wild vegetation interspersed with sand and stones, thanks to which the whole thing is colorful and does not merge with the heroes also maintained in shades of green.

I wanted the diorama to be universal enough for a potential buyer to use it also as a background for adventures, the heroes of which would be minifigures from other series such as Star Wars, Dreamzzz, Castle or Dungeons and Dragons. Thanks to this, the set can also attract the attention of people unfamiliar with BIONICLE.

The figures themselves, in terms of articulation, are no worse than any old LEGO BIONICLE sets and can be played with individually. These are not strictly exhibition MOCs. In addition, thanks to the use of consistent colors and a large number of small bricks (unlike classic sets that focused on size over complexity), Toa and Matoran can be combined into hundreds of combiners of your own design, like Rahi or Titans.

My project, as a whole, presents a symbiosis of biology and mechanics, where the natural aspect is represented by system elements constituting the ground, flora and the entire environment, while what is related to technology is expressed by Technic bricks.

I hope that it is a worthy representation of the legacy left to us by the first generation of BIONICLE, as well as a proper tribute to the many years of work of Christian Faber, Greg Farshtey and others involved in the development of this universe. And of course, that it fits well with what the fans themselves, who keep the BIONICE series alive to this day, expect from an anniversary set.

This is epic! I like that you built these figures entirely from current parts. That alone makes designing a Bionicle-style figure harder, but you did excellently here!

The only con of that solution is that by being more complex, Matoran and especially Toa, blend too much with high detailed enviorment. In real life it’s not such big problem but on the photo, whole MOC looks a bit messy before you’ll look closer and understand what exacly you’re looking at.

Still, I’ glad you like it

I like this and you have my support!

It feels like Bionicle while still being made out of system. The colors are perfect for Bionicle and the characters would really pop against the other Bionicle sets we have. The gear function is a master’s touch, too! The gears are expertly woven into his body and actually look like they were intentional, compared to other Bionicle sets that have out-of-place looking gears.

My only con, like you said, the details collide with each other and the characters get lost on the environment. I like the Toa and Matoran the way they are, so maybe in future iterations you could tone down the environment? Make it more simplistic, more cartoony? The trees could probably be bigger, if that’s possible, and maybe removing some of the plant bits on the ground would help.

Can’t wait to see how this goes, good luck in the support process!

I’m a sucker for complex designs (like in this MOC and Bayverse Transformers), so I love it when they’re done well.

I really like that matoran design. It’s very detailed but still somewhat simple and not overly complex which I feel like is the perfect way to design a matoran. And the remade mata torso on the Toa looks awesome.

I am definitely going to support this.

I think, it woild be possible to make bigger trees by replacing brown 1x1 cones with, for example, 2x2 truncated cones (they unfortunatelly do not exist in reddish brown version), but diorama would be huge and less compressed.

But thing I’d like to upgrade the most is design of Toa’s limbs. Most of needed pieces do not exist in lime or turquoise and it’s hard to make them less complex with current pool of still produced bricks. Especially for someone who was using G1 bricks since the childhood :stuck_out_tongue:

But LEGO rarely releases Ideas sets in the original form. I’m sure that (if my MOC will reach 10k and won’t be rejected) creative team will do their best to fix my mistakes. I only gave them a solid base to work with

This is a very cool project. You’ve done a great job of capturing the vgue “Bionicle aesthetic” with modern parts. While I’ll admit that I couldn’t immediately identify the specific Kanohi, I could still tell that they were Kanohi in general.

The one small criticism I have is that the Matoran is a bit taller compared to the Toa than I would have though. He almost seems more like a Turaga, especially with the somehow-elderly-looking mask.

Also, do you have any names for these two, even if the names aren’t part of the project?

The Toa is in a crouch, so he appears shorter than he actually is.
Also, this is a concept of how Toa and Matoran would look years after they had settled in with the Glatorian and Agori, so they’ve certainly adapted their bodies to their new world and upgraded themselves using technology left by the Great Beings, so the body proportions could potentially be slightly different than they were in G1.

About names, I thought about “Kaleloka” for Matoran (inspired by word “Kokauolelo” what means “Chronicler” in Hawaiian) and “Huilinu” for Toa (inspired by Hawaiian “Hooilina” what means “heir”).

But I didn’t mentioned those names in the project

On the one hand, I’m glad that after so long period of neglecting the huge opportunity that is LEGO Ideas, someone decided to lift a finger and put together a solid-looking MOC that focuses on what Bionicle should be, but on the other hand, it’s sad to see how the fandom became a shadow of its former self, able to muster only 105 votes in four days…
I mean it’s not your fault, bro. This problem was already noticeable in the case of Toa Head Statue, which only managed to collect the required vote pool because DuckBricks took matters into its own hands and guided the fan base to support that set. We are a Bionicle fandom. We should gather and organize raids to make every fan activity a loud event. And lately, the only thing we can engage in are discussions about Tamaru’s gender which only divided us.

I completely agree, I’ve seen a lot of projects which I know a lot of fans of bionicle and other things would love but very few of them actually know that those projects exist

How do we rally support though? YouTube is a good way to get exposure but besides the people on the boards that have a channel how would we communicate to YouTubers that would want to support stuff like this

I know Duckbricks would probably promote this (since he’s doing fanon contests now).

Fun fact- probably it was my post on Duckbrick’s Discord (which was pinned by one of his mods) what caused that his video about THS was made. Since THS reached 5k votes, I was trying to promote it with help of my friends from Polish Bionicle Discord, but it wasn’t effective enough because there was always one random fan who had to write “There is no point in voting for this project, LEGO won’t choose it anyway” what was ruining whole plan to motivate others. Duckbricks was our last hope to make 10k under THS on time and fortunatelly he not only helped but also thanks to his video, we received help from Christian Faber himself. Without those two, THS probably wouldn’t reach even 9k.

And from my point of view, supporting LEGO Ideas project is really important thing, because of two reasons.

  1. It’s official stuff. Not some fan game, animation, art or fanfiction. No matter if LEGO will let specific project become a set or not, it’s the only type of fan creation which will go through employee’s hands.
  2. By uploading project, I’m giving LEGO rights to my design so even if they’ll reject my project or it won’t reach 10k, LEGO can use my design to create, let’s say, a GWP inspired by my Matoran or copy build of my Toa for some non-BIONICLE set. Sokoda’s Diorama, GSR and THS were just system builds so LEGO never used them but in my case, I think votes can become meaningful and make Creative Team learn that BIONICLE can return even without introducing 50 new molds
Hence, I believe that every BIONICLE fan who is able to build a BIONICLE MOC using Technic bricks and only elements still in production should submit something. And those less skilled, should support such MOCs by voting and promoting them.

Now, my diorama is the only available BIONICLE-themed project but there was a lot of other great MOCs which deserved to get more votes. So yeah, I see your point. Believing in success of chosen projects can be naive, especially when LEGO prefer choosing things like typewriter, cat or London phone booth, but naive hope is more productive than the skepticism of the realist, which only gives us lasting stagnation. After all, the only thing we can loose is time required to click on yellow “Support” button.

Of course, promoting other projects is important too. Many know about Masks of Power. Nova Orbis is also popular. But what about Kolhii Champions? Or “Secrets of Metru Nui” animation? Without TTV podcasts people won’t learn about existence of smaller things. This is the problem our fandome must talk about more

Make post about it on BZPower, I noticed you missed them and it’s probably biggest community of Bionicle fans

Good point, I forgot about BZP. I’ve already linked my MOC on all BIONICLE-themed Facebook groups and Discords I know and on some Reddits, but from what I see, less than 10% of those who liked it, actually voted. Not sure if it’s because of they already gave up their hope that LEGO Ideas makes sense for us or they’re just too lazy to log in on Ideas page :stuck_out_tongue:
I hope it’s just because of lazyness, because such fans will be more willing to cooperate when project will have bigger amount of supporters. Skeptics, on the other hand, will resist until the very end, sticking to their belief that if LEGO rejects projects aimed at our niche, there is no point in trying.
Sokoda’s Diorama and LEGO’s 90th Anniversary voting proved that when people believe that their action can make a change, BIONICLE fans can outweigh other fandoms without much difficulty

To be honest, I’ve lost faith that fans will give LEGO Ideas a fourth chance, but I still hope you can pull it off. It’s nice to have a project that the fandom can reunite around. Especially since until Masks of Power comes out, we probably won’t have anything like it. People forget about small-scale projects quickly. This one could become something significant once it becomes more popular. I suppose, we shall see soon

I really hope that the community can at least have enough hope to take a minute or two to log in and just tap a button, we don’t have anything to lose and I would say that it seems Lego is probably less dismissive of bionicle lately given that they gave tahu a place in the 90th anniversary set and actually released the first bionicle set in awhile.

But even if it doesn’t make it I’m proud to be supporter number 111!

I’m not sure how LEGO sees BIONICLE for this moment, but premiere of Masks of Power game will surely be loud enough to make them reconsider creating some stuff for our community. 2026 is the 25th anniversary of the series, so it will be perfect moment to release the game (for Team Kanohi), to start G3 (for LEGO) and if not, to at least give us some anniversary set.
My role in all of it is to give LEGO Creative Team some inspiration and BIONICLE fans a common goal to stand together. If gaining 10k will take my project a year or more, it should succeed (or fail) somewhere around mentioned anniversary. We’ll see what comes out of it. I hope it will be at least… something :stuck_out_tongue:

For me, getting 10k isn’t the most important thing. Helping BIONICLE return in any form is all I’m aiming at.

It seems, I’m no longer the only one here ^^
Not sure, how successfull will be these two, because first one has some problems with proportions and second one is a crossover with LEGO Space, but still it’s good to see so many BIONICLE projects after such long break
