The First: MOC Contest Results (BIONICLE Canon Contest #1)

My most sincere salute to those who stayed faithful but with integrity to Entry 1 by not inflating the votes, you truly are unsung heroes.

Well, there goes my plans to draw Helryx as a rubberhose-era cartoon character, with pie eyes and everything.

Although…

Nobody said I still can’t.

The maker of Hoseryx explicitly stated that it wasn’t a joke entry.

Oh c’mon man it’s just toy robots. I’ve been a huge fan of Bionicle my entire life, but you dont need to take it so seriously

Dewit.

Seriously that is a great idea.

Please, we must see this as an actual thing. Even if she didn’t win, doesn’t mean the sweet art needs to be halted!

This has been a point that’s been repeatedly made throughout the controversy, however, it’s critical to remember that because Bionicle means so many things to so many people, some people value some aspects and take them more seriously than others do. I think it’s really important to recognize that and not to just assume because we don’t care as much about a certain factor and don’t take it as seriously that others also oughtn’t to.

This system was my idea originally. It wouldn’t be ‘Is this your favourite?’ The question would be ‘Are you comfortable with this winning?’ The threshold would be 50% ‘yes’ votes to qualify. If a MOC can’t meet that threshold, then it probably shouldn’t have a chance to win.

Also, you say ‘people won’t vote for it’. But that doesn’t work when the vote can be split more than 2 ways.

(NOTE: For this next example, I will be using Hoseryx as an example of a ‘joke’ entry, since that was the most controversial entry. I am not trying to make a statement on the legitimacy of Hoseryx, nor am I accounting for all of the various opinions on Hoseryx. My example is assuming that everyone either had Hoseryx at the top or bottom of their overall picklist.)

A good entry will get about 30% of the vote. That signifies that 30% of the community have that entry as their favourite. However, a good entry may be in second-place (or next up, in the case of multiple votes) on the lists of many other people. Altogether, a majority of the community reacts positively to this theoretical entry.

But what happened with Hoseryx is that 30% of the community wanted a meme, while the rest actively did not. However, since the votes for the ‘serious’ entries were split between multiple other entries, Hoseryx stayed in the running, despite a majority of the community strongly disliking it.

My system would ensure that an entry can only win if a true majority of the community is at least comfortable with it.

Congrats to TheUnderscoredDouble! I’m pretty dang happy with how the build looks, coming across as an in-between of the Slizers and the Toa Mata. I can’t wait to see what the final mask design looks like!

So.

Insults have been slung, memes have been made, everyone’s complained about the voting system, Lehari’s council has been blown wide open, and #2 will move on for the final review by Greg with a likely 300 page document talking about #6.

You’ve done your duty, gentlemen. Let’s go to bed.

Congrats to the winner and all the participants.
Am I glad this one won? Not really, it wasn’t my favourite choice, but congratulations nonetheless. This contest was one hell of an experience.
At least the salt and tears on /biog/ are glorious, so that’s something.

I don’t think anyone here trusts the data.

The mods don’t trust the poll itself because – they argue it is full of “””noise””” .

I don’t trust the mods because – I suspect they are “””biased”””. Their methodology for determining and eliminating this “””noise””” is incomplete and won’t be released. There is no a counter-argument. These votes are fraudulent and that is the end of this discussion. Except it is not.

The mods were confined to take the following approaches: Option A) Accept the data for what it is OR Option B) Add filters to the noise. So far they have chosen B).

It presupposes the noise really is noise. It presupposes an iron clad narrative.

This video resumes my sentiments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRN_KT17mNo

But this so called “””noise””” reveals interesting information, taking Bendryx for example, a “meme entry” someone said, another tag for noise, it formulates even more interesting questions than who is the winner itself:

  • Who can and who cannot live in the Bionicle universe?
  • What constitutes a Bionicle Fan? Does 35 minutes really matter that much?
  • Who is part of the community and who is not part of the community?
  • Who calls the shots and who doesn’t call the shots?
  • Shall we be reductionist of the OR category (there is only the right and wrong side of history, a linear spectrum of answers) rather than try to encompass more than one narrative ?

Once when Faber was asked how did he managed to create such a good world building he more or less answered: “imagine a place where you can live for a couple months, a place to return”.

I think Bionicle stories belong to those brave enough who can imagine their own happy endings, those who can take control over their own narratives, rather than those who need someone on their shoulder to tell them what they can imagine and what they cannot.

Nobody has answered me with a straight face who is the Bionicle Community . Few reached out and even found others who once shared their passion. In turn they were discredited here. But I say good for them, the story doesn’t go one way, it runs through many trajectories, they found friends and you won’t believe them because they don’t count as real.

You cannot know for sure what people intentions are, nor what their agenda is, what they like, what they dislike. To affirm otherwise is to deny life and to deny death, to speak for other voices, to be blind beyond your own nose, it is a form of imperialism but you won’t know it. And I think the poll reveals an agency, sure it might be noise for you, but people united for once towards two solutions. What do these people think about the state of Bionicle right now? Remember Lego Ideas who selected Seinfield for being more relevant in values than Bionicle is right now.

Anyone can mistake the map for the territory, you can model reality, but models break all the time, people commit mistakes, people deny their mistakes. I argue there can be interesting mistakes.

At this point the least you can do to avoid the backlash is ditch the OR approach and go towards an AND engagement which unites the thesis and antithesis as you don’t even know what truly happened during the whole voting process. Two bads don’t make one right, but two rights might make one whole.

…What?

What are you trying to say? The poles are rigged? That TTV should revise the voting process?

Uh…

What

That has got to be the most profound and verbose way I’ve seen anyone say “These votes might not be accurate and some valid votes may have gotten lost in the process” ever.

Now I have to know… who IS The community?

Comparing a toyline contest to Imperialism is an insult to all those who have suffered under it’s evil in the past. This is a tasteless remark.

I am wondering the same thing, fine fellow. Who IS the Bionicle Community? Does the Bionicle Community enjoy slow walks at night? Does the Bionicle Community have a peanut allergy? I don’t know, but it’s time for TTV to open up and tell us!!

Turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, the blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned; the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand; surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out when a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert, a shape with lion body and the head of a man, a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, is moving its slow thighs, while all about it reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know that twenty centuries of stony sleep were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, and what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Looks like a gated community of elitists shutting down a fair participant in a poll because it didn’t meet their glorious gold standard of build quality
