The LEGO Technic Discussion Topic

…Did I not share this here? I did not share this here. Sorry, the Unpopular opinion discussion reminded me there was another important piece in my Brickfair trip.

There was a LEGO Group employee who gave a presentation and Q&A at Brickfair. They’re in the marketing area, has a large role in the Lego Ambassador Network, works on the Lego Ideas panel, etc. In part of the opening, he said the two main groups he doesn’t know well or hear from: Technic and Bionicle. So after the presentation, I asked him a question - will Lego ever release Technic sets based on animals again, like they did with Forma and the 2001 Rahi.

The answer could be summed up as, “hopefully.” Not a no, not a yes.

He stated that the Technic team was challenged to make/design sets that didn’t use wheels, weren’t ground-based vehicles or flying vehicles, etc. And so they have brainstormed and are testing things like cuckoo clocks, animals, and more. But the main issue is that the designers on the Technic team really only interested in designing super cars, because they find those “sexy” and more impressive to show off.

The planetary set from last year wasn’t something they were thrilled about designing. Which he did bring up the space wave from last year, especially that planet set, was part of their push to try and get Technic to branch out and do more. They just need to convince the designers and more of the LEGO Group that it’s worth pursuing. He said if someone could get a Technic animal to 10,000 supporters, maybe a 3-in-1 Technic creature, or Technic anything to that level, it would at least make the argument easier internally to release something more unusual that won’t make super car levels of money.

The fact they have thought about and have been experimenting, even forced, on doing things more with Technic at all was good enough news for me. Even if it never comes out. But now I have a new Lego Ideas mission.

I was already determined to try and make pure Technic, or mostly pure Technic, animals because I was tired of waiting for the Lego Group to do it. The scarab I built for Bio-Cup was an experiment I’ve been meaning to do and did so before I was at Brickfair. But now I have a lot more motivation and a specific goal.

But they are in marketing, so of course it could all be sweet nothings. So, it was time for research.

There are a few Technic submissions on Lego Ideas that achieved all the support they needed. And all of them were promptly rejected.

The earliest was in 2012, which was before the 10,000 supporter requirement and it got rejected. Though being 24 shy of the 10,000 modern requirement in 2012 is nothing to sneeze at. It had been awhile since the LEGO Group did car brands like this in any form and most of the Technic licensed sets, which were also rare at this time, were purely construction related.

Being in the early lifespan of Ideas, not sure how much it affected the modern direction of Technic.

Image

After the 10,000 supporter requirement was added, we don’t see a Technic project reach that goal until 2018. As you can see below, this motorized snow groomer is massive. And while we would get licensed Technic sets at this scale and various tracked motorized sets a few years after this, nothing quite like this ever comes. Though we did get a small snow groomer set in 2023, I doubt this beast influenced that one.

Image

We see nothing until 2021 with the Boston Dynamics robot dog and we get no equivalent. I’m guessing licensing and disagreements between the two companies is why it didn’t happen. Not even a Mindstorms/robotics version either, so perhaps too risky. But that is a shame, because this would be so close to getting those Technic animals. A perfect middle ground.

Image

Later in 2021 we get this clockwork solar system. This got 10,000 supporters three times (2021, 2022, and 2023) and was rejected each time…And then we got a simpler version of this in 2024 in the Technic space wave. This, this right here makes me believe that it is possible to use Ideas to convince Lego to take a risk on a singular Technic animal set. It will just be very hard.

Image

This tractor and wagon is also achieved its support in 2021, a month after the first go-around for the clockwork solar system. It seems lockdowns really helped the Technic side of things. While not this classic style of tractor, we did get a similar kind of set with John Deere later.

Image

This is the last Technic submission to make it, and rejected, in 2024. Turing Machine – Working Lego Computer. Very cool, incredibly niche. I see why it was rejected. Too early to know if we’ll see anything like it in the future.

Image

And as of current (provided I didn’t miss any), there is one other Technic project that made its support goals that is yet to be reviewed. The CESSNA 185 Skywagon. Which we have some similar Technic sets already.

If you search through Ideas, it will list more than these in a search, but the rest aren’t Technic submissions. They’re System sets that sometimes utilize Technic for the motorized functions underneath. Most others, even if they get a Staff Pick to help boost them, barely get past 2,000 supporters.

But alright, it seems possible. Has anyone else submitted Technic animals? Why yes, I remember most of them and supported them. The links to them are below, though the frog ones are my favorite. Do check them out and their functions.

But as you can see, these hardly went anywhere. If I am going to achieve my mission, I’m going to need a lot of help. The more people building Technic animals, the better. We might not get Technic constraction again, but think of the new parts that could be created to better facilitate Technic animal builds. Imagine how much Technic could evolve and, with the socket and ball joints still in production, lead to modern possibilities with Technic constraction. Even if we end up being unable to convince the public or the LEGO Group to give it another shot, at least we’ll help push something forward.

@ajtazt What do you think about the idea of experimenting with Technic-Bionicle on LEGO Ideas? We’ve already had two Bionicle sets on LEGO Ideals reach 10,000 supporters. I feel like if such projects keep reaching 10k, LEGO will eventually be convinced to take a gamble with a single 18+ Bionicle set.
I think that Technic Bionicle has a lot of potential, seeing that Bionicle itself originally started out as a Technic Subtheme. Maybe someone could try creating a Tahu figure entirely out of currently produced Technic parts or maybe something like a modern version of the 2001 Rahi (though I doubt those would carry the same marketability as a Tahu figure).

I’m already working on something like that. I was planning on revamping my Self-MOC this year and, as a challenge, only use currently available Technic parts. We know Technic action figures can be done, and even mecha, with currently available Technic and we have seen examples both from rival toy companies and bootlegs. Though they also tend to add a few custom parts in there as well (see Hasbro, CaDA, and Mechanical Master examples below for fun Technic things).

And while I still plan on revamping my Self-MOC to be largely composed of current Technic, I’ll be deviating from the initial plan to add some retired part flare that better suits the character. I’ll still eventually build a, largely, pure modern Technic character eventually. Especially since the examples below aren’t the most stable and not really meant for action play.

But the reason I advocate for Technic animals over Technic constraction for Ideas is that I, currently, don’t think it’s as viable. Especially if you’re trying to recreate the masks. Most of the finer detailing in the Bionicle parts can’t be recreated easily in either System or Technic without changing scale significantly. And even in changing the scale, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi in design that Technic can’t replicate on its own and would have difficulty even with System assistance.

What I’m saying is, things like CyberSlam and the 2001 Rahi would be easier to do since they are, for the most part, just Technic in parts library. So creatures is easier to pull off and they’re at a scale that’s easier to make good details alongside functions. Figures…you can make get something similar to CCBS at a larger scale but beyond that I don’t think you could sell the public as easily.

I will be eagerly looking for your Technic-Animals (“Technimals”) project because so far, it sounds very intriguing, like you’d described it.

Although, I have to disagree with your last statement:

Well, I’d like to argue against this by showing my own digital MOCs, which I cobbled together (with terrible topologies & geometries) inside of BL-Part Designer:

OFC, these are still in the early development/prototype phase, but I do think that they illustrate my point quite well.

Which is that you don’t need a bazillion pistons, greebles & whatnot to make Bionicle well, feel like Bionicle.

You can even see some examples from some of G1 as well as most of the G2 set designs that kind of prove my point:

Gali Nuva only has four pistons in total (unless you count those two on the sides of her head), one on each side of her waist, and one on each of her feet.
Gali Master has almost the same amount on her shoulders.

Spoiler

If I miscalculated the pistons on either of them, then feel free to correct me.

So, IMO, figures are pretty doable on that scale even without the usual amount of biomechanical details.

I was answering from the mindset of only using Technic parts that are available. In which case, your post aids my point - new elements would need to be created for the same scale. And while pistons are the most commonly talked about greeble for Bionicle sets, they aren’t the only details. Just look at Gali Master’s Brain Attack torso piece - all those folds, angles, and segments, the circular ring in the middle and divots. Look at Gali Nuva’s limbs with the pin going through washers/circle metal plates, the way it flares out at one end with triangular holes, those smooth and small curves that even System can’t match. Tell me, how one-to-one could you make a Nuva shoulder out of Technic or even System? How large would it be without creating new parts? Even CCBS shells couldn’t be replicated within System natively, so the LEGO Group created entire new parts for something similar in Ninjago for the mechs (SCCBS).

The pistons are easy enough to add. Or at least the larger ones. But all that shape language? Albeit inconsistent and always changing shape language that constraction used through its entire run? Difficult. Capturing the design language? Now that’s easier, because you’re building functions, you’re replicating purpose. An action figure that a child can hold and easily activate its function to [knock off masks], [fire projectile], [swivel], etc. against other figures.

That really depends on what they would make at the end.
If they’d stick with the offshoot of the Technic theme with animal models instead of vehicle ones, they’d only need a handful of new parts to make the sets look authentic.

But, if they decided to make a G3, you’d be right; they wouldn’t have much choice but to make a new set of bones and armor shells for the “canister” sets, since those (mainly, the Toa) were the main draw for the customers across the theme’s lineup.
So, it comes down ultimately to what they would make.

As for the said parts, here is what I think they should do:

If they’re made of bones and joints, respectively, like these, they could pull off some really versatile and compact figurines, IMO.
They would only need 2-3 armor shell variants to give more weight and shape for those limbs.

True, but I think they’d rather create a new, unique aesthetic for G3, which would be designed to fit more into the current Technic lineup.
One of the most often criticized aspects of G1 by regular Lego fans was and still is that most of its parts were too specialized for use in other Lego themes. (Which was more or less true.)
Lego would definitely try to avoid repeating that again.

They probably would adjust its visual language to the current Technic parts’ portfolio, which is also very different from the one G1 had come from.

It would need to maintain a very delicate balance of preserving some aspects of its core identity while also adapting to the current environment.
Either way, an official G3 would be drastically different from its previous predecessors.

Well, not entirely:

If the designers were able to pull these off in System, they could probably do something similar in Technic as well.

Plus, as I pointed out above, they wouldn’t have the exact same delicate details, since the new molds need to be versatile enough to be compatible to some degree with other Lego theme parts.
