this is inaccurate

1. There are 6 main varieties of corn: dent corn, flint corn, sweet corn, popcorn, waxy corn, and flour corn.

2. All corn is edible. Sweet corn is just the only corn that can be eaten straight off the stalk. It is NOT the majority of corn grown, at least in the US. That title goes to dent corn, which is used to create everything from cornmeal to corn syrup to corn starch.

3. Black corn is not a variety of corn. There are notable corn breeds that are colored black, but they all fall under the six categories listed above.

Given the evidence presented in your story, it is impossible to tell which of the six main varieties Slimbo and Cronk run into. Given that this is based on LotR, and that there was a mill in the Shire (iirc), my gut would say that Farmer Square is either growing dent corn or flint corn. However, as I stated, it’s not possible to tell without more details.
