These two things have nothing to do with each other. Additionally, we don’t know if the entire story will be rebooted, or if there will be a TV show story and a Cinematic Universe story that ties into the Lego Movie world.
Also, the suggestion that a company whose primary gimmick is “creativity” and “imagination” has run out of ideas is just absurd.
Now I understand that both themes are based off Castle, but they aren’t exactly the same thing. Ninjas are still different enough from knights to attract two different markets, well, in my opinion anyway.
I’m not too sure if comparing Nexo Knights to your vanilla Castle theme wouldn’t work out too well. NK has the push that most other subthemes from the line lack and more space-like aspects. Though Space is also known for its shorter lifespan, combining the two together might give differing results.
I can honestly see this happening, where a theme like NK gets a smaller summer wave to help pay for TLNM and return to their usual schedule after the film. The only major issue that I can really see coming is in the line’s supply and demand, although that’s only if the line is popular enough for the initial stock not to make due.
Isn’t that sort of what happened with Bionicle, however? They ran out of practical ways to cohesively incorporate new ideas. It got to the point that it became confusing and messy. Lego is a creative business, but like any business, especially one with a franchise that has a rather specific target demographic, they aren’t capable of making everything work cohesively. In fact, through listening to some of the TTV and Brickfeed Podcast episodes, I have learned of plotholes or contrived elements in the story I had never known of previously. When a story gains plotholes or contrived elements, especially noticeable ones, it begins to slowly fall apart. Lego has put over half a decade into Ninjago’s story, and letting go of that for a cinematic movie that will likely gain a large amount of profit (speculative, but supported by the success of The Lego Movie) tells me that they aren’t confident that the current story will work for a movie. That’s a lot of work and time to essentially start over for such a large release.
Also, this is a Lego theme. Have they ever before created alternate continuations for a single theme other than the alternate universe substories visited in Bionicle? Even then, those were visited rarely and were usually regarded as just being side stuff. Have they ever before had two main continuities for one theme?
No, it isn’t. It’s clear they hadn’t run out of ideas at all. We knew they had planned another two or so years of story that would go into sequels to The Legend Reborn. Plotholes and inconsistencies aren’t a sign of no ideas, it’s just a sign of poor planning/writing.
I don’t quite follow this question. Did they ever make other themes based around certain concepts? Cause if so, then yes. Knights, Knights Kingdom, Knights Kingdom II, Nexo Knights. That’s the tree and the logical conclusion that concept took.
What I mean by continuity, is a story. For example, Marvel Comics constantly plays around with alternate universes. Has Lego ever had two main alternate stories for a theme running simultaneously?
I really don’t see Nexo Knights and Ninjago having to compete for consumers. They’re completely different in terms of visual aesthetic. I also don’t see Nexo Knights suffering the same fate as past Castle themes, because it’s only a Castle theme in spirit. Story based themes like NK and Ninjago don’t get any less than three years unless they tank really bad.
TBH, sets look pretty cool. In terms of parts, those Action build torsos and re-inclusion of the Samurai Mech minibuild hips make for fine additions to any chibi Constraction MOCist. The rocky aesthetic for the villains, little “bricksters” (good reference tho), flames in a trans. light blue & purple mix, amazing stone mix thing (calling it the stone-ghost tail should be easiest), and the blade pieces are also lovely for any later use. Clay’s fighter is just fantastic in its use of dark azure slopes and whatnot, so there’s that.
In terms of minifigs, I’m pretty miffed by the exclusivity of all the knights but Lance (and then Lance appears in 2 sets and an exclusive that could’ve been Macy’s cheaper set.) Sure, having Axl in a cheaper set is great, and getting Queen Halbert with Aaron is apways a plus, but Macy’s exclusivity in an expensive set with Ava (though that’s not too bad) makes getting the team in normal armor a pain. That said, the Ice Planet vibes are great.
In terms of sets:
70347: Trans. red armor is cool, goon looks nice, rotating wheels for movement is pretty nice. Nice cheap set to army-build away.
70348: Drills are cool, general sleekness of design makes for a great set. I really like the drill-lance design, and the connection is cool too I guess. Rock guy has the best legs evrar tho.
70349: Small purple and azure bits look fantastic, and the creativity of the motorcycle-prison-chariot thing looks pretty swell. Queen Halbert looks fantastic, and I’m glad Lego has made that form physical and widely available.
70350: Cheap Axl, purple rocky bits, flames; what’s not to love?
70351: It’s interesting, to say the least. The set looks solid, but my biggest gripe is probably the wings and their gappiness in favor of function. Burnzie minion is cool, and the large arsenal (sans the stupid flick-fires) make for a fantastically playable set, but those wings are going to have to be extended to kill the gaps, in a way. Like the creativity, like the combo: fantastic set in general.
70352: I’ll be honest; this looks great. And massive. And it lacks the SNOT on the sides of that jester hat. Aside from that, I really don’t like the exclusive Macy and a third Lance (Clay would’ve suited better). Nevertheless, the contents more than make up for its (rather insignificant) shortcomings.
Battle suits: Not a total fan. Arm builds look ugly, but use of the Samurai X ■■■■■■■ waist is something too hard to pass up. New torso looks great, but the lack of knees and use of hordika necks feels off. Shields are alright, but the weapons aren’t the best. Of course, black pins in the arms make up for a large amount of the problems. I might pick these up.
In total, this wave looks fantastic. I really feel like this’ll be the year NK becomes the next Bionicle/Ninjago. Frankly, as long as the show relies on more linear plot or better character development, I think I’ll become an actual fully-fledged supporter of Nexo Knights.
While I’m really liking the sets for next year… can they please do less vehicles? I like having sets with actual backgrounds and scenarios. Story themes have been waaay too oversaturated with vehicles as of late. I’d also like animal mounts. Like, what if Macey got like… a giant red mechanical bear, and somone else got a giant mechanical hawk or dragon? Axle could even ride a mechanical bull, or maybe a bison!
Macy could ither get a vehicle that looked like a land based dragon or a jet with dragon like traits. i agree that Axl could get a land vehicle that had bull traits, maybe as some kind of tank or battering ram.
and like i said before, Nexo Knight could do with some “location” sets, the only one they have currently is Jestro’s lava castle. Ninjago and Chima had a good number of location sets themself.
so… you mean a land vehicle for Macy that can swich to a dragon form, a jet vehicle for Arron that can change into a wolf, some kind of tank for Axl that changes into a bull mech and a vehicle for Clay that transforms into an eagle?
i actualy rememberd a Chima consept art of a robotic mount for the lions, basicly it could change forms from a four legged mount form, to a two legged battle form:
You do remember the hover horses right?
Those blended castle and space perfectly, I don’t really like the idea of animal mounts tbh, doesn’t really fit the whole tech knights theme.
