The Ratchet and Clank movie

Who here is excited for the ratchet and Clank movie? Honestly, despite not knowing anything about the games (aside from the fact that it’s about a weasel and a robot) I can defiantly say this movie has my interest. What about you guys?

Ratchet (the orange fluffy dude) is actually called a Lombax. AND I’M COMPLETELY gonna go in with lower expectations and still love the movie. I’m more excited that I believe this studio is making a Sly Cooper movie.

The game is getting good reviews as always. 8-9/10s across the board

This is my absolute dream. If I had a PS (which I don’t have), I’d play R&C all day every day.

I would be so hyped to watch it.

Based on the few movie clips in the new game, it looks like it’ll be great. I think that trailer above is kinda trash, but I think the movie will be good. The TV spots are the superior pieces of marketing.

This 30 second TV spot shows off the movie better than the trailer. It’s weird, but it’ll make you laugh.

The first review is in and it’s positive.

For the most part.

Here’s hoping the majority remain positive. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if the critics hate it, 'cause they probably won’t understand it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Another one came in and was negative. So it’s a tight fight here. I’m hoping it at least winds up being okay so we can finally have a good video game movie.

I’m worried it’s gonna wind up being smack dab in the middle of good and bad and will spark a massive flamewar as to whether it truly is the first good game movie.

OR, it’ll flop and will cause a chunk of people to assume that the games suck as well when in actuality the games are fun as butts. Seriously, R&C games are so much fun. i love them. X3

Well, remember though that it’s coming out in a literal dead zone of animated films. The only other kids film out right now is The Jungle Book, and the closest animated film after Ratchet is I think, Finding Dory. So it might sell some tickets based on the fact that there just isn’t any competition out.

Oh, and nerds like us. :joy:

Zootopia.

Plus Civil War is coming out the following week.

But as for this weekend, R&C’s only competition is Green Room (a gruesome indie film that’s supposed to be pretty ■■■■ good), and Keanu (a comedy from good ol Key n Peele).

Given animated flicks’ history at box office, it has a fairly good shot at topping for this week, although I don’t see it outdoing Jungle Book this week.

Welp… 1 positive… 4 negative right now. They’re kinda mean, too.

Not many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes as of now but it’s currently at 21%. Admittedly I can kind of see what the issues might be, a lot of the clips I’ve seen really look like they might be trying to pander to younger audiences with its humour, even if there are one or two jokes I like.

So, I saw it Friday night, and here are my thoughts.

FULL SPOILERS

This movie is heavily flawed. For a movie called Ratchet & Clank, there is actually very little Ratchet and Clank in it. The first half hour or so is great. Their initial meeting is awesome, and written well. Afterword though, there is nothing on-screen that shows that they have bonded to become friends. The final shot of the movie as they kinda walk away into the sunset doesn’t have any emotional weight to it, as we never see why they get along. Now, as a long time fan of the franchise, I saw the chemistry and why they were friends because I’ve played all the games and have known these characters for years. For an average movie goer who has never seen or heard of these two before, there’s nothing to show why they’re friends besides one comment about them both being orphans that crash landed on Veldin.

Then they get separated by different mission tasks for most of the movie. Ratchet goes off to shoot stuff with the Galactic Rangers while Clank helps Elaris monitor them. Because of this, we miss out on more potential bonding moments. Now, there may be a large chunk of the movie that was taken out, as the game features a movie clip that was mysteriously absent from the final film. My theory is that before getting to Kerwan, Ratchet & Clank land on Novalis and inadvertently save the day there, where the mayor gives them an infobot with said missing movie clip. It might be during this sequence that we see them bond more.

The movie actually feels more centered on Qwark than it is the title duo. Qwark has a decent character arc throughout the film as we see Drek manipulate him into betraying the Rangers. It’s clear that he’s not a bad person, as he seems to care for Cora, Brax, and Elaris, but he just puts his own ego in front of everything else, which is really true to the character. Also, pretty much anytime Qwark is on screen he got me laughing, which is good. As for the comedy, I’d say it was ok to good. There were several jokes that were certainly left over from T.J. Fixman’s first draft of the script that were very Ratchet & Clank type jokes (Wilhelm!). 99% of the jokes either got a chuckle or a smile at the very least out of me, where I felt that really only one joke just completely fell flat (Zed’s opera moment).

There were a few scenes that I felt could’ve been left out to help the pacing. Qwark doing the ‘I’m always watching’ eyes to Zed was completely unnecessary, and the magbooster scene through the canyon could’ve been cut and replaced with a much shorter gag of everything in the garage hitting the ship while stationary. This could’ve opened up more time for my Novalis theory.

Now, even though these are problems, I will say that as a fan, I did really enjoy the film. The weapons testing scene was great since we got to see all of the great weapons from the game, and it was an clever way to explain the weapon wheel. All the cameos from characters from the games (President Phyronix, the Plumber, Juanita, Dallas) were fun. And I completely geeked out when Nefarious emerged from the wreckage of the Deplanetizer in all his robotic glory. For all the fan-service in there, I give it five stars, as fans will no doubt enjoy it. For a casual movie goer though, I’m going to have to give it two and a half stars because of said problems.

Still, you could tell that the people making it really care about the franchise, and wanted to do it right. There’s probably just some deleted scenes in there somewhere that would’ve made the film better, even if it was a tad too long because of it. And it’s still the best video game movie ever made. So there’s that.

While it isn’t the first good video game movie, it is arguably still the best video game movie.
