Thoughts on Lego Ben 10?

The value definitely wasn’t there for most of us. Why do you think they were priced that way? And how much would you have realistically paid for them?

I’m pretty sure it’s a print…

The same as a medium sized Toa at most; 15.99-ish

Except humongousaur. Seriously, that one has to be, without a doubt, the worst constraction figure I have ever laid my eyes on.

I like the spikes and hands/feet they introduced in this line, other than that there isnt much I would recommend with it.

I’m almost certain it’s a sticker. I’ve got a Spider Monkey set at home, I’ll confirm it when I get back from vacation.

Yeah, he’s really not very much to look at. That being said, he is responsible for one of the absolute best parts usages I’ve ever seen on a BIONICLE MOC:

Even if they might have good parts usage, they still look awful to me. They’re all the same builds, with little variety save for minute details. Poseability is limited. As a kid, when a friend gave me a Ben 10 set I built it and never played with it. No play value.

That’s an understatement.

HE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE ARTICULATED WRISTS THO

Really? I always wanted humungosare the most due to all the unique brown recolors.

The limb pieces and the torso piece are really useful for moccing, but that’s it. The feet are awful, the heads and torso armour are specialized, and the claws are meh. The flat scale armour can attach to a CBCS shell and is really useful.

The sets are dumb, but they have some really useful unique parts that you won’t find elsewhere.

I can totally understand where you guys are coming from. Maybe I don’t look at them as harshly because I’ve found some of the parts useful in MOCs and because I have a bit of a soft spot for the Ben 10 concept.

I honestly think that if the Ben 10 sets had been released with the current full-grown CCBS system, they would have done much better. The show lends itself extremely well to constraction; there’s a massive amount of source material to pull from among the variety of interesting looking aliens from the different seasons and spin-off shows. Plus, we’d probably get some really nice recolours.

Here’s the thing though, if you just want the sets because they have nice parts, I think that’s a sign that the sets completely failed. No kid or any consumer in general should buy a set for parts packs and not for play. Ben 10 sets aren’t even good at play.

probably around $10.

Plenty of AFOLs but sets solely for parts. They don’t even build the official model, they just empty the box out, throw away the instructions and sort the interesting new parts into their collection.

Heck, even I did something similar with the 2016 BIONICLE sets I just got. I built the models (mostly just to see how they looked in person and to discover new building techniques), put them on display for a little while, and then broke most of them down for parts (parts being the main reason why I bought them in the first place).

I’m not arguing with that. The Ben 10 sets, as they were released, were a failure when compared to other constraction sets (even at the time). I guess I just always like to find the good in things (there’s always something, no matter how small and insignificant it may be). I find that in general it’s much better and healthier to focus on the things you like about LEGO instead of constantly nit-picking about every single thing that’s not perfect.

At the very least you got to observe the builds. When I got my Ben 10 set, I built it and just left it alone.

I’m not saying AFOLS shouldn’t be allowed to buy sets as parts packs; they’re adults and the concept of playing with toys is long gone. What I am saying is that kids that are in the age demographic shouldn’t just buy a set because it had cool parts and not for the intended play.

Like you and a lot of other people, I thought the parts were good, but once again, I only appreciate them for the parts now, not for how they looked nor for how I’m able to play with them. As a child’s toy, they’re the most boring figures. As a teen/ adult toy, they’re great for parts.

I get ya. Though for what it’s worth, one of my friends’ little brothers owned Humungosaur a couple years back. He looked like he was having fun with it. Though he may be an exception. :stuck_out_tongue:

Now I really fell like making a CCBS version of at least one of these sets - just to prove that it can be done. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Ben 10 sets are interesting if you consider them a precursor to CCBS. Aside from that, they’re not really noteworthy.

I do find it funny that while nobody really remembers them today, or looks that them fondly, everyone hated them back in the day. Mainly because it was the constraction line that immediately replaced BIONICLE. People didn’t let up until Hero Factory came out. Then everyone jumped onto that hatewagon and left Ben 10 behind.

Also, since I never bought them, how were the quality of the pieces? Post-2007 BIONICLE pieces were very brittle, so I’m curious if if the line suffered from the same fate.

Almost as good as CCBS.
