Toa Chiara
Hello there, I present you my interpretation of our best known Toa of Lightning
Designing female Toa is always a challenge, as it is difficult to convey the femininity of the figure based only on BIONICLE bricks on such a small scale. It doesn’t help that people voting in DuckBricks’ fanon contests seem to favor smaller entries (I prefer Toa Inika height). So, when I started building my Chirara, I decided that I would start by thinking about what kind of torso I wanted to build.
Making interpretations of canon Toa, I always assume that a canonical Toa should use the Toa Metru torso as a base, but the poor number of votes collected by my Toa Orde during previous fanon contest pushed me to decision to go for an easier solution this time and construct a custom torso. I didn’t wanted to create another slim and lithe character. This appearance suits a Toa of Water. I wanted Chiara, as Toa of Lightning, to stand out with something that would only suit her specific element.
I took Mr. Freeze as my inspiration, while also trying to add small decorations that would make the armor resemble something like an electricity generator.
To make the torso look more like a suit, I wrapped a collar of pipes around my Chiara’s head and placed similar pipes around her hips, inspired by the purple belt worn by Sasuke (user of the Chidori technique) in the Naruto: Shippuuden anime.
When constructing custom limbs, I tried to make them slim, unlike the massive torso, but at the same time, I wanted them to have sticking out details that look like elements of a miniature power plant.
In terms of the mask, of course I decided on the canonical Kanohi Volitak. When printing it, I chose white filament so that the white accents would balance the blue color prevailing in the torso.
My Chiara’s spear was inspired by the weapons shown in the movie Transformers: Age of Extinction, specifically the sword that transforms into a blaster. I decided that since Toa cannot kill, instead of choosing a classic, realistic spear intended for stabbing, I would build something more unusual. At first glance, the tip of the spear may seem too massive, but considering the overall length of the weapon’s shaft, it does not bother it at all.
Throughout the entire construction process, I had a goal to choose bricks that would allow other people to recreate my MOC without spending a fortune on Bricklink. The parts used by my Chiara are cheap, common, and most of them are still in production, so it won’t significantly affect the prices of individual bricks. I didn’t used any rare color variants of bricks or custom elements other than the mask.
I hope this design will be well received by fans
