As a boy, my first Ninjago lego set was the “Epic Dragon Battle” with the Great Devourer and the original Ultra Dragon, as Ninjago was my big thing in those days. Just this summer, I’ve cleaned off the old pieces and reassembled this piece of my childhood, and I felt like applying my newer skills into upgrading this dragon.
The first thing that always bugged me about the set was that there was only one green ball for the dragon to shoot, and only two of the heads could shoot. I managed to find some thornax launcher parts and some balls to match each of the heads. Light blue for Wisp, green for Rocky, fiery red and orange for Flame, and a white with icey blue for Shard.
The other thing I wanted to adjust was the proportions. I used metru legs to extend the lightning and ice necks with hand connectors to hold the head pieces.
I wanted to use as few CCBS pieces as possible, so this was my only concession.
To further sell the Dragon as being larger, I gave it some new front legs using Vahki legs I’ve recently gotten a hold of.
Now, the dragons standing stature is more proud. As another small touch, I moved the wings out just a bit their connecting rods for a slightly wider wingspan. I got Jay the newer nunchaku handles, and made Cole a whole new scythe of quakes. I also got a bunch of swords for Lloyd and Nya.
I really love how the Ultra Dragon sizes up with my Ninjago collection now. I’ve even made some modifications to the ZX ninja’s golden weapons.
Now, when I fit the fan chain through the handle holes, I see the larger and mighty dragon flying in my room. I get a real kick out of it.
I even found some Ionix chain for Lloyd to use when mounting it. I’ll have to try and make a proper reigns at some point. This has been a lego dream of mine for the longest time, so I’m real happy have this done.
