Ussal Cart Interpretation

So, I tried my hand in actually making the cart used by Ussal crabs as an actual set/accessory:

Though, I didn’t really want to be too accurate to the way the cart looks in the game. I wanted something just a tad less simplified, almost like something you’d see in the background of Legend of Mata Nui. Plus, making just a solid cart would not only require a lot of technic beams that I don’t feel like getting, it’d either have to be over-engineered to be slanted (at least only in the ways I’ve thought of) or just a box. I got so obsessed over this that I resorted to looking at a catalog of Technic sets around the time. Pardon if the pics are a bit awkward.

So, firstly, I really really wanted the “coupling” to be loose and maneuverable, so I figured using the empty space on the Ussal’s back would be okay. It’s not perfect, and my main concern is that the cart’s height isn’t suitable against the Ussal’s, but I figured this design was okay enough. I haven’t built this or an Ussal as of writing this, so can’t exactly experiment. At least it can potentially turn around well.

Another thing is that the cart itself, except for the “bushes” and the wheels, are pearl light grey, the flat silver color. I dunno how that’d look in person, hopefully it’s alright?

Capacity-wise, according to Bricklink Studio, it can fit four boulders very snugly without stacking, which is nice. Hopefully that adds a lot to the set-piece. I am concerned about the cart being back-heavy though, but I’d rather the underside look clean and have everything stable than shifting the weight forward.

Lore-wise, to me, this seems like a nice look. The panels almost make the cart look like a typical wooden horse-drawn cart. In my mind, almost everything the Matoran of Mata Nui have built has used parts of the Airships they were carried in, so I can see this cart being made of repurposed and tacked-together parts from an airship. Even funnier is that Bricklink calls the wheels I used for the cart “pulleys”.

Anyways, sorry for writing so much just for this one single specific piece of equipment that appears all of once in the entire line. Truth be told, I just am really obsessed with the “trade routes” of Mata Nui and how the Matoran would have lived before the Toa arrived. I really just wanted my own little Onu-Matoran caravan, and what’s a caravan without the carriage?

Of course, I’d love some feedback on the design. Will be getting the parts to try this out soon.

So cute! I look forward to seeing a physical version of this!

Some changes I would suggest is give the crab cogs like the original and changing the wheels to 2994c01, although what you have also looks good and I get if you want to avoid a wheel with too much “tire.”

Appreciate it! I did think a lot about the wheel, and yeah, what I was going for was less obviously a car tire and more something I can talk myself into imagining as a wagon wheel.

Like I mentioned, I wasn’t aiming for 100% accuracy (even though it’s entirely possible), it’s more like a translation as I much prefer something like looks like a wagon than an off-rail minecart, especially given the island theme.

As for the cogs, my goal isn’t to make a mining Ussal (although again, entirely possibly to do and I might get some for customization) but more an Ussal that tags along in trade caravans.

Update: Alright, so the 7L Axle is extremely rare in black, so gonna replace with 8L. Not sure if I’m gonna use more 1/2 bushes for the ends or not.

This looks great, especially for what pieces you were able to use.

That’s so adorable, I would totally by that and put little matoran inside :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Update: So, a couple things cropped up in how the cart turned out in person. First, I was right about it possibly being back heavy. The liftarms acting as the . . . I guess the yoke? The weight wasn’t enough and the cart would lean back. I switched the right-angle thin liftarms under the cart so now it leans forward like it’s meant to.

Second was how the cart “hitched” to the Ussal. It works, and it allows the crab to pose turned from the cart, but it seems too loose and sometimes forces the Ussal to tilt.

To solve the second thing, I might get a yellow axle connector to fill the space more, which hopefully doesn’t tilt the crab too much in the process. Other than that, the cart’s good to go!

I also have a bit of an idea on how to let a Matoran ride the Ussal. Thing being that it’s pretty much impossible to have the Matoran “sit” on or in the Ussal, but I figured having them “surf” on the back of it would do. Might showcase that idea in the next group of pics.

Looks so good! Awesome job making it aesthetically consistent with the early Bionicle and Technic sets, looks like the Ga-Koro boats.
