Okay, okay, okay, I know this is pretty weird, but I re-watched Disney’s Atlantis over Christmas, and I haven’t been able to shake this thought. It is a movie I have always wanted to like more than it deserved, in large part due to the characters and vibe. Sure, the pacing and plot are not especially good, and the characters may not even be that deep, but by golly, watching a bunch of kooky adventures just kinda muck about in a big sub and then in a big cave is just fun.
That brings me to this realization that dawned on me during my latest viewing: “This movie feels like a TTV RP. This movie feels a lot like a TTV RP. I’m pretty sure Commander Rourke is actually exactly how my subconscious has been picturing Ghid for the past eight yea—”
Ahem.
So this brings us to the actual topic of this topic, which is essentially just “”“casting”“” different board members as the different characters in Atlantis. Specifically, I’ll be matching the characters to the play styles of different board members based on who I felt would create and play those characters if the story were to have been a boards RP. Now, I understand that most of the folks I’ll be mentioning here likely haven’t logged onto the boards in literal years, and only a fraction of active board members will even know who they are, but quite frankly, I don’t care.
GM: @Ghid There could be a number of different folks on the boards that could GM this game, but something about the classic, pulpy, 1914 adventure plot really feels like something Ghid would come up with/run.
Preston B. Whitmore and Commander Lyle Tiberius Rourke: Ghid (again)
So, both of these characters are not only obvious GMPCs, but they also both feel pretty Ghid coded. An obvious quest giver character like Preston is a classic choice for getting the plot of a boards RP going, and Rourke serves as both an excellent guiding character, as well as a great antagonist. Both have that Ghid-ey gregariousness, and Rourke’s twist villain nature would work well for a short boards RP.
Milo Thatch: @BlackBeltGamer98 or @Winger
My initial thought for Milo was BlackBeltGamer, but Winger also came to mind. A moralistic optimist who’s determined to complete some altruistic task and is willing to take a stand for it against all odds is very BlackBeltGamer coded. He also has that ‘main character’ energy which always seemed to come naturally to Winger and BlackBelt’s characters.
Audrey Ramirez: @rainsong
Audrey’s initially cynical but eventually warm personality reminds me a lot of the kinds of characters rainsong would play on the boards. She’s laidback but competent, acting mainly as a supporting character, but with a lot of heart.
Helga Sinclair: @TheMOCingbird
I feel like a common trend among a lot of the characters I’ve played is that A: they’re usually somewhat levelheaded marshal characters, and B: they usually end up being a minor antagonist without being too evil. Helga checks both of those boxes, plus she dies, which my characters often have a knack for doing.
Gaetan “Mole” Molière: @MakutaOisli
Molière is a little freak, and while Oisli’s characters usually aren’t as comical, they are usually little freaks. Nuff’ said.
Vincenzo “Vinny” Santorini: @Axels
Vinny is a kind of standoffish but ultimately chill guy. I think I was only ever in like one RP with BrokenAxels, but if their character was anything, it was standoffish but ultimately chill.
Wilhelmina Packard: @_el
A certified yapper who doesn’t really do anything other than yap (but who’s yapping is still appreciated), and is goofy but ultimately inconsequential to the plot. Packard really feels like the kinda characters that _el would play: rarely plot relevant but always lurking in the wings with a funny quip.
Doctor Joshua Sweet: @Tarkur or @Flux
A nice fella with a semi-prominent role in the story. Agreeable and friendly but competent, something about his style seems like someone who Tarkur or Flux might play (@Rukah would also probably be another potential player for this guy).
Lastly, we have Jebidiah Allardyce “Cookie” Farnsworth: @GoodGuy2006
Kooky and kinda useless (no offense), Cookie reminds me a lot of GoodGuy’s earnestly offbeat characters (at least the one that I’m most familiar with). He’s a crazy old guy, and that fits GoodGuy in my book.
So there ya have it. This topic has been sitting in my drafts for like a month, so here it finally is. Hopefully I didn’t offend by either their inclusion or omission from this list, this was really just off the dome and isn’t that deep. If you can think of any better fits, feel free to share your thoughts! Also, are there any other movies or shows that you have also felt felt like a boards RP?
