I got my first Bionicle sets in 2007, those being Jaller and Nuparu Mahri, but I knew bassicly nothing about the lore until post-ignition trilogy, and I only became well-versed sometime around 2013.
I’m curious to hear your story. I’d imagine that’s pretty rare especially seeing Bionicle isn’t produced anymore.
Wall of text incoming: Getting back into Bionicle was kind of a fluke. I’m one of the people who dearly wants to be an indie game dev. One work I want to do is a metroidvania (though I prefer to call it “Weapon-Oriented Exploration”)
First version was supernatural, then medieval, finally settled on sci-fi to pay homage to where that genre began. Needed some kind of prior franchise to use as a springboard, so I went down the list almost like how Stan Lee went through a list of names before settling on Spider-Man (flies, bees, spiders). Bionicle popped up in my head, I stuck with that, and began looking up information.
Lo and behold, I discovered that G2 had come and gone and I never heard a whisper about it. Then I stumbled upon one of the G3 podcasts, and now here I am.
I still intend to make that game though. Very much reminiscent of Bionicle, but hopefully very much its own thing.
Next step? Thinking about shopping on BrickLink for MOCing.
As for the reason why I even know about it, my brother got some of the 2001 Toa for Christmas, back in the day. He’s 8 years older than me. I’ve kinda inherited them.
The farthest back I can remember wanting a set was 06 but I didn’t get my first set until 08. I picked upon the lore during 08 too.
I got my first sets around 2009 (Raanu and Kiina), but really got into the story after it ended.
Christmas 2001. When I got toa pohatu as my present.
Between 07/08, got Hahli Mahri at Walmart.
- Instantly. Period.
I’ve been a bionicle fan for as long as I can remember, so probably around the year [REDACTED]
I was a fan since 01, but I left off at the end of 07.
Returned to the fandom briefly for the Skrall in 09 and made a full return in '15.
Maniac4Bricks (Joey)
2021, if I remember correctly. Had two sets for many years before, but that’s when I got curious and wanted to know more about these figures.
It was 2025, i saw the new sets for G3 on shelves and i decided–
Huh?
What do you mean this is 2024? I specifically put 2028 into the time machine. Well, i thought i did. Wait, that means the younger me is around here somewhere. Okay, well, uh… Wait, this thing is still recording. Better delete it before i acciden
I became a fan around early September 2007.
I still remember the day, when I went over to one of my classmates, who showed me the Barraki games and commercial on the official website in early June.
That was my first more in-depth exposure to the world of Bonkle.
Two months later I watched WOS on DVD, then discovered the Mahri and got a deep dive (no pun intended.) into the larger lore.
I read a couple 2007 comics, but, started becoming more interested in 2008. I’ve basically been a fan ever since.
I’m not really sure. Because of my brother I’ve known bionicle my whole life but it wasn’t until later that I actually learned the story. Not sure what year exactly.
Technically around 2013 or 2014, when I picked up some of the G1 Bionicle books in a school second-hand book fair. I remember a kid offered to trade me some Diary of a Wimpy Kid books for them… glad I said no.
I actually started calling myself a Bionicle fan in 2015, though, when I got Kopaka, Master of Ice from the Lego store. I was sad it replaced my Hero Factory, but it felt similar enough for me to enjoy.
For myself, somewhere around 2011-12. A friend of my family had a particularly large collection of Bionicle sets that we played with a lot at their house, and I found out about the theme in general through The Lego Book, which was a DK book about everything LEGO made. I didn’t start actively doing anything with Bionicle until around 2020 or so, when I made an account here!
As I said before on another one of these topics, 2005 (which I will always have soft spot for the Bionicle brand).
