This is something I’ve thought about lately. What types or genres of video games do you enjoy most, and which do you like the least?
Right now, it’d be puzzle games for me. First and foremost Tetris, other notable ones are Touchmaster on the DS and castle clearout (bonus game in Mario Party 9, but it’s a really elaborate one and could work as a standalone title).
If you asked me this a year ago I would have definitely said racing games, which I still enjoy but play far less often than before. I’m not a fan of realistic racing simulation games, I prefer the wackier unrealistic ones like Mario Kart, Lego Racers or Snowboard Kids.
3D platformers fall somehwere in the middle, I find them fun but am just really bad at them. Right now I’m close to completing Mario Galaxy 2 after starting the game 8 years ago, wish me luck!
2D platformers rank below 3D for me, they’re good too but I’m even worse. Every now and then I try continuing Super Mario World, but I’m stuck towards the beginning of Island 2. I really like Mega Man 7’s style and soundtrack, but I never managed to beat any level yet… And I’ve tried a lot of times.
What I don’t like are fighting and shooting games, especially if they’re somewhat realistic. They can be ok if they’re harmless and funny, but I’m generally not too big on the genre - doesn’t mean they’re all bad for me, I have a Ninja Turtles game on the SNES which is quite fun, if a little too difficult for me.
If the games try to emulate the “real feel” with realistic weapons and such… hell no.
I also don’t like RPGs, mainly because I feel like I’m too dumb for them. I’ve tried several (Mario and Luigi inside Bowser story, something from the Final Fantasy series, SNES Mario RPG, Earthbound) and I never really managed to get far. I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do in most cases, and the turn-based battling isn’t my thing.
which is an easy segue for me. I enjoy turn-based combat, but on a larger scale. I like turn based games on a larger scale; including tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem and broader strategy games like Advance Wars. I also like platformers, and I count metroidvania games as part of that, as well as abstract puzzle games like Tetris. Kart racer games were something I enjoyed a lot as a child but I mostly play when friends suggest them now.
I think style is less of a concern for me than making a game fun to play and control. I have pickier standards for real-time RPGs; if the combat isn’t both fun and demanding I’m at best not in the mood to replay it anytime soon.
I’m a hard guy to pick favorites of anything. I find questions like these difficult, especially for stuff like favorite movie or favorite music genre. I just like too many different kinds of stuff.
But I actually made a list of my top 9 favorite games a while back (9 and not 10 because I saw a trend of people making little 3x3 square graphics of their favorite games), so I guess if I peruse those I’ll get my answer.
In order, my Top 9 are:
Minecraft
Overwatch (2)
Sonic Adventure
God of War (2018)
Super Mario Sunshine
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Batman: Arkham City
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
Of course, this list was made a while ago and I’ve since played some newer games that make the list, like The Pathless.
But of those 10 total games, 5 of them are 3D Action/Adventure games, 2 3D-Platformers, 1 2D-Platformer, 1 FPS, and 1 sandbox game.
Overwatch is the game I spend the most time playing, so FPS is my most familiar genre, but it’s hardly my favorite.
Sonic Adventure and Minecraft are some of my most favorite games of all time, but not the genres I play the most.
Action/Adventure games I think are my most favorite genre. I love controlling a character, exploring a world, and a good combat system always gets me excited.
My favorite video games used to be ones that I could play with my friends, but I don’t have friends anymore who play videogames with me.
Minecraft was and kind of still is my favorite videogame overall I suppose. I play it the most these days and from time to time I’ll hop on Hypixel and play a few minigame rounds.
That being said, I enjoy kind of a wide variety of games:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Pokémon Scarlet
Mario Kart 7
Lego City Undercover (for the Nintendo Switch, though the 3DS version is also fun)
As for least favorite…
I’d say first-person shooter games but I liked Bionicle Heroes for the DS, which was an FPS game. Not to mention I also enjoy a few rounds of “Cops and Crims,” which is an FPS game on the Hypixel Minecraft server.
One game that I know for certain I do not enjoy is Rocket League. I used to play it with a cousin and my brothers but eventually just stopped because it was really boring for me.
