Ops left this in draft and forgot it existed.

They’ve done cultural/mythology inspired themes before, they’re trying to reach a mostly untapped market who may connect better to a story they know. China is a big market, and it seems to be paying off.
(So, money.)

All companies need to keep up good PR and a tribute to a popular movement and an existing demographic will garner success.
(Again, money.)

AFOLs are making a larger part of their market now and hipster/nerd culture is more socially acceptable now/mainstream, with this demographic willing to spend more if it means getting something nostalgic or that fits in with their decor without screaming “child’s toy.”
