No idea, but there’s tons of weird Technic pieces these days. It’s a really useful piece, despite its… interesting shape.

It has been brought to my attention that I call this family of parts something no one else does.
They’re axel tubes.
Normally I just refer to them by their number (Angle 4), but when I need to be more specific they’re axel tubes.
A 2L axel tube versus
a 2L peg tube.
Yes, I know it should be axles. But I usually separate the Lego/Technic axels and car axles with incorrect spelling.

Calling them tubes is just wrong, even without your misspellings… they’re axle connectors and peg connectors and I won’t hear otherwise

These are the PVC pipes of Technic, they’re the piping. They’re tubes.
But hear my reasoning on this one. The axels and pegs are doing the connecting and not the pipes in of themselves. Calling them a joiner or joint would be better if the thought process is that they connect two separate liftarms or axel/peg lines. Just calling them a connector is like calling all System bricks “clutch” to me because that’s how they come together.
…This also where I’ve since realized the Bricklink calls a bunch of Technic stuff generically as connectors. Basically every multi-directional facing beam is a connector. The sheer insanity.
Very reasonable. Probably the better name.
