Honestly I get that saying “buy these products if you hate them” is absolutely ridiculous and stupid but in a way it basically a paradox in of itself. You can’t just not buy the product at all or LEGO won’t know what they did wrong but that also means there won’t be a bigger budget the subsequent wave. This means you can hate the sets but if you won’t buy them, well, how exactly is LEGO supposed to know if they can fix any issues if, one, they don’t really understand why it failed, and two, how it can be fixed when the budget is lower due to how the product is selling.
Admittedly it’s very flawed logic, but it’s also hard to explain without reaching the conclusion of “buy them anyways.”
At least for the early years anyway, when they are deciding if they’ll keep the line going. That way they have the support to improve in future while also having the critiques to help make the sets better
I’m guessing the location would be revealed near the middle of the year, Umarak gaining it and then possibly using it to empower himself to become ‘The Destroyer’
I think a better idea would be the Toa designing their own armours for each year, thus putting their own spin on things. Then we could understand varying weapon choices such as why Pohatu 2016 has a boulder attached to his weapon
It would also add a sense of character… Onua looks the way he does because he wanted to improve his armour. His mask looks the way he does because he personalised it. That sort of thing would be nice i think and implying each Toa had a sense of uniqueness. Not changing the basic underlying structure much, but giving them armour, tools, weapons, masks, etc that complemented the character :3
Ekimu is forging the Toa’s new weapons diligently at his forge, when Pohatu comes along…
Pohatu: How are the weapons doing 'Kimu?
Ekimu: They’re coming along…and don’t call me 'Kimu
Pohatu: I see that you’re making a spear for me…that’s kinda lame
Ekimu: Any suggestions to make it more suitable for your tastes?
Pohatu: Well, I always wanted a flail…but I also want a huge broadsword!
Ekimu: Well, I can flatten out the spear to-
Pohatu: Ooh! Ooh! How about you forge a broadsword, with a flail at the end!
Ekimu: That sounds pretty unwieldy…
Onua: Ha! You call that a weapon brother? 'Kimu, forge me a giant hammer with a drill on one end and a crystal shooter on the other…and don’t forget to make the shaft super long and thin!
Ekimu (exhausted after making all 5 of the Toa’s complex weapons): Pant, pant…Lewa, you’re the swift and agile one…probably gettin’ something sharp and quick to reflect tha-
Lewa: Screw that, give me dual motorized helicopter rotor blades!
Ekimu: . . .
*Ekimu: That’s it, i’m done with you guys. jumps into the forge
How about his golden mask that he has to retrieve? Wouldn’t make sense that the Toa personalized their regular masks, then have to get the same mask, but golden from faraway lands that are guarded by the creatures of the elements…
I don’t really see it as a Toa Nuva reference. I was thinking more along the lines of their masks being incomplete, hence drained colours on normal ones and elemental colours on gold ones. So then they have to find the Creatures to fuse into a complete helmet thing (the Creatures’ heads cover the spiky parts).
We haven’t seen the physical masks yet, I’m not a huge fan of the silver/spikes but they’re fine so long as they’re not covering the entire forehead.
Incidentally, was there ever an explanation for the Metru Nui Matoran sets? Those masks had silver foreheads too, which I also wasn’t too fond of back then.
So, I actually think that this wave each Toa only has one mask, their standard elemental one. I believe that they do not actually have to collect another golden mask and that their masks turning gold is simply an effect of Unification. I’d much rather prefer that, because of the Toa have to find a brand new version of their new mask every year, I will be pretty annoyed.
We do have to take into consideration the fact that the coloured/silver masks may not be canon, and the entire next years story actually just revolves around the Toa searching for their respective creatures. As of right now, there’s nothing that could give the Toa reason to have to search for new golden masks, when Ekimu could just improve their current ones. Ofcourse RoSS could change that, but as of now we cannot say with absolute certainty. If anyone’s wondering why would they include both masks then, it’s quite simple. Play features. A rough idea of the story is taken into account when designing sets, so they probably thought to include it for the sets sake, rather than it’s gonna be included for story. Again, we cant say for sure yet. We cant trust any of our current sources of info (product description and LEGO mag), as they are well known to not be canon, and one states they do need to find the masks, while the product descriptions dont mention much other than they include the golden masks (and equip them for added power, play features and stuff), but rather emphasise the finding of the creatures. So as of the current time, while we cant know what’s going to happen for sure, I wouldn’t say it’s safe to assume anything about the quest for the golden masks, or the golden masks in general (except they grant elemental powers). I’d prefer for the quest for golden masks, as it’d increase the amount of story, but I am finding myself unsure about if it is canon.
To be honest, I’m glad about all these gold pieces, because it’s the only way to get them from Bionicle line for my MOCs. Single golden figure (Ekimu) wouldn’t be enough. Guys in Lego know it, that’s why we see gold in expensive sets only (except for masks that are in almost every set)
That might be pretty accurate to what we’ll see in 2017 if we have 3rd wave of Toa figures (+ translucent masks with golden “hairs” and some ridiculous companions).
I don’t.
I have several of the old ones (Piraka), but after invasion from below…
… Let’s just say that in retrospect, most of them weren’t good sets.
It’s also a sign of a declining franchise trying to get the system-ers to buy it. I don’t want that to happen.
I would have loved some Glatorian ones, though. An actual arena with gresh vs. several skrall… and army of Skrall… I would have totally bought that.
I for one wouldn’t mind a proper line of Bionicle system sets, if they were released alongside the figures.
Stuff I’d want to change though would be things like:
-no weird large custom molds
-properly posable minifigures with an original head for each character
-more system parts (bricks!) rather than only predominantly technic-based builds
The Bionicle playsets looked very stale, but since the overal aesthetic of system sets has improved over the years (I mean, just compare an early 2000’s Castle set to a recent LOTR set), I think Lego’s second shot at a Bionicle system set would be more succesful.
They put a lot more effort into play features nowadays, too, so in combination with a fresh new look and a few core design changes, I think Bionicle playsets could work… maybe. I don’t see it happening, though!
@king328 Oh come now, IFB had some really good sets compared to HF’s prior years. Jaw Beast really reminded me of past BIONICLE sets, something HF hadn’t done for me all of its years before.
Sure the story was bad, but it seems like just because the story was mediocre everyone acts like the sets were too. I mean, who cares about getting full-scale hero figures? We’d gotten them for all of HF’s run! The villains are more important and more interesting, and since we got some pretty cool monster builds, I think all of this hate is unwarranted (set wise).
Anyway, I’m not too sure I’d buy BIONICLE playsets. System is a bit overpriced for my tastes.
