No disrespectful intent on my part, I just can’t get behind the idea that canon should bend to fanon. I can certainly see how fanon is the way that enjoyment of bionicle is expressed by this group, but I’m not sold on how everyone else must conform to a canon where thier fanon exists. Are these contests not a different expression of the same drive? The desire to add to a lego theme they enjoy and love?
Of course, I’m not telling anyone to stop talking, since I don’t really want to get into the Tyranny of the Majority/Tyranny of the Minority sort of thing.
This, this right here is one of the sole reasons^. You have too either deal with it or give up on canon or whatever part of canon you enjoy it for. I’m sorry I don’t see how that is fruitful for a community.
Now I’ll say that I’m okay with the contest as long as certain rules about parts percetages are put in place.
Edit: Also personally I don’t have many fanons all I mostly want is new additions to follow in line with old estaplished designs from canon and rules to support this.
All I was saying was that I don’t think anything that makes members of a community feel alienated or delegitemized for their opinon or enjoyment is a good thing. No matter how many or how few are affected.
If this was an endevour to stregthen the community it should value making sure everyones enjoyment in said franchise is preserved.
I don’t know how many share my stance but it doesn’t change my point.
You can’t run a community on a strict I’m right you are wrong mentality. People are going to disagree because everyone have different opinions and a successful and healthy community nuture its diversity
it’s okay, glad you like him!
(though if you have any other thoughts, they would be appreciated on the post itself, since our short discussion here is getting a bit off topic.)
I do personally feel alienated as a result of the headcanon discussion, and I wasn’t even arguing that the headcanon argument warranted the contests to end - just that it’s a valid but minority view that was probably being misunderstood.
However I’m willing to believe it’s just a vocal few that have responded harshly, and I’d guess that’s because the topic has been brought up before (which, FYI, I wasn’t around for). I assume most people understand and respect the premise.
For the record, if pro-contest people get irritated at anti-contest people simply because they’ve heard an argument a million times before, just kindly let them know and tell them where they can find the previous discussion(s). Hopefully some people won’t revive old debates that way.
I don’t see how this is appropriate. This is kinda proving my point.
okay, non sugar-coated response got flagged, let’s try this again.
It’s ironic because that’s what I’ve been saying this entire time, with much detraction from Tarkur. Everyone’s been all about “I’M RIGHT YOU ARE WRONG”, and when I last pointed that out, Tarkur specifically reacted with a question mark (whatever that means) … only to turn around and reiterate the same thing? My comment edged in too much tension, yeah, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw that.
There’s no way to please everyone. To say or believe there is is idealistic to the point of naiveté. Surely everyone should be able to see that. So what the admins have done so far is gone with the solution that pleases the most amount of people. Which is completely rational. And if you’re in the group that didn’t get what they wanted (which I am), then you just gotta suck it up and realize that it really is a reasonable solution.
For what it’s worth, I don’t care whether the contests continue or end. I just don’t think “but my headcanon!” is a good enough reason for them to end. The only compelling reason I’ve seen is that it’d put a stop to the ceaseless squabbling over toys. I just don’t think that’s the only solution, or the easiest one, though.
I am the grill to your chicken. The oven to your cookie dough. The dragonfire to your dwarven flesh.
I only make this point because it’s been leading to constant off-topic in-fighting and no discussion on the actual topic at hand, which is G1 canon contests.
