BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

tuyet has 4 arms so she can have a sword and an axe

I mean, a sword is pretty good at slashing, IMO, but that’s not the point; the point is that how would she do a slashing attack with no weapon?

slashing karate chop, obvs

A sword with barbs pointing towards the hilt doesn’t seem optimized for that, though. Not a weapons guy so I could be wrong (I suppose to be fair Greg isn’t either so anything goes). I don’t know what Greg intended by slashing, but I don’t know if it’s confirmation of a specific weapon.

Well, yeah, it’s not confirmation of anything; I’m just pointing out that one line implies she has a weapon, and another line in the same chapter implies she’s unarmed. Maybe Greg forgot she was unarmed, or maybe she thought Axonn’s ridiculously oversized axe would be better to knock Miserix down.

It wouldn’t be the first time Greg forgot what gear a character has; in Brothers in arms, Vultraz stops short of stabbing a mask that Mazeka isn’t wearing, and in Dark Destiny, Onua tosses aside Quake Breakers that he doesn’t have at the time because the Piraka took them.

What is confirmation is the fact that he said he’d reveal Tuyet’s weapon in the Story Serials and then gave her a Barbed Broadsword in the Story Serials. Even if it is an alternate Tuyet, there’s no doubt that he intended for a Barbed Broadsword to be the weapon of primary Tuyet.

Edit: while looking for images of a Barbed Broadsword, I found this awesome design.

I am even further in support that the Barbed Broadsword design should be decided by the art, because this would certainly have to be a 3d model.

This.

Like…we can be technical, the only quotes regarding the Barbed Broadsword specifically in-text are in reference to Empress tuyet having it. There’s also several Greg quotes where the question asker refers to the main Tuyet having the barbed broadsword, and greg doesn’t correct them, but that’s not exactly definitive in the slightest.

But…guys…we all know she has a Barbed Broadsword, right? I know, technicalities, but, like…she definitely has a barbed broadsword. Tuyet would be a massive, massive outlier among characters with alternate universe depictions if this wasn’t the case.

There’s also more definitive, descriptive quotes on what the Barbed Broadsword looks like than Tuyet ever got, but that’s neither here nor there.

Since you’re the guy with all the Tuyet quotes right now, do you happen to have the one where Greg said her weapon would be revealed in the serials? I know it was posted somewhere, but I can’t find it.

I don’t have it, and I honestly am not sure where he would have said it. I do believe you that it exists though. I can do some digging.

Would also like to stress, based on me attributing a quote to greg that wasn’t greg only two hours ago, I am not authoratative in my quotes lol.

EDIT: That took two seconds, wow.

Q: What was Tuyet’s Mask power and weapon power?

A: This will actually be revealed soon on BIONICLEstory.com

EDIT: I made a further extrapolation in an earlier edit from that quote, but that extrapolation forgot that Into The Darkness exists. Clearly, I’m making mistakes right now, so I think I’ll step back from Tuyet canonization conversations for the day in order to avoid introducing confusion again.

There’s two.

The first one isn’t direct, but Greg apparently said that her weapon would be revealed in Into The Darkness, though this eventually fell through:

This promise was likely extrapolated from the quote that @JMSOG just posted.

Then, after Into The Darkness was complete, Greg eventually said that it would be “when she appears in the story”:

It should be noted, though, that “whenever it happens in the story” is a somewhat common response from Greg, and he himself usually didn’t know when, if ever, this would be. On its own, him saying this doesn’t necessarily indicate that he actually had anything specific planned. However, when taken together with the fact that he had previously promised an actual reveal, it seems more likely that this specific instance of the answer actually had intent behind it.

Well, yeah, but you still have them; you just have to make sure they’re actually from Greg.

The one Jerm posted is the one I was thinking of, but this is good to know too. Thanks!

My point (which I think I didn’t communicate clearly since I had just woken up haha) was I don’t think a hard and fast rule restricting height is necessary, but an informal guideline of “how does she look standing next to Lhikan” might guide MOCists away from needlessly complex or overbuilt MOCs and more towards “regular” Toa sizes.

As a few others pointed out that probably isn’t necessary for Tuyet (Toa Tuyet is, well, Toa-sized). For contests where it isn’t as clear what their height is (Lariska, Marendar, GSB come to mind) I agree that having a strict height restriction rule like we did for the Hagah isn’t necessary. If we do height limits at all, they should be more malleable (e.g.: “entries should not be significantly taller than the Inika/the tallest Toa set or shorter than Onua Mata” might be good for Lariska since she’s about the size of a Toa in canon). Make it so there’s room for interpretation and creativity but also that an (absurdly hypothetical) MOC taller than 08 Takanuva isn’t accepted for a character that is of average height.

Regarding whether a Barbed Broadsword should be mandated: In the last contest, the Hagah art contest, we set a precedent that the characters must be “fully equipped” (even with Norik and Iruini), since that was the only canonical appearance they would be getting. Multiple art entries were asked to include the shields, and at least one was asked to include Norik’s spear. If Tuyet has a Barbed Broadsword, it should be shown in the artwork (and probably the Moc too).

I agree with this; “looked like Lhikan’s” is almost-definitely referring to shape, rather than colour or colour distribution.

There’s still some ambiguity about what “looks like” means, but that’s probably good since we can avoid restrictions. At first, I thought it would mean “must use the same armour parts as Lhikan”, but I quickly realized that that would mean all 11 Mangai were literally identical, which is ridiculous. Obviously other parts and designs can be used, and there’s really no hard line on what parts “look like” each other.

This almost feels like a Hagah-Kanohi situation again; it is certainly possible to have a purist sword build, but the rules also allow for it to be 3d-printed. Some entries will have specific intent behind their design, purist or not, while others may want to just have a placeholder for a custom art-based design.

Would people be open to having a Hagah-style consent setup for Tuyet’s sword? (If it is decided that she must have one, of course)

I was referring more to the ruling on Helryx and Artakha’s masks, where the Moc mask was a confirmed placeholder. That said, I do quite like the consent system set up by the Hagah.

Imo, a weapon should be required in the moc. The entry would look incomplete without it. It’d be like Indiana Jones without the hat or the whip, the sword is basically half of her personality.

Whether people want to use a 3D printed sword or a custom sword is up to them. And I’ve seen some people say custom swords wouldn’t work; I’d say it’s entirely possible to make a custom sword that looks good, take Synnova’s or Bukkey’s for example.

My take on the tuyet nidhiki build discourse is that they should both use hordika torsos

It keeps them in the same scale and style as lhikan without limiting them to being metru clones.

It also could be fun foreshadowing of their true nature.

EDIT: Also regarding height restriction, personally I think there should be a soft one. Since she does have a team member she has to look reasonable next to.
Personally I don’t think a hard cap is the way to go, but rather a rule just saying she should reasonably scale with lhikan

Though at the same time I figure most people won’t vote for a titan scale tuyet anyway so who knows if it’s really necessary

I don’t know if that’s such a good idea; those torso pieces are so rare as it is, if they’re on a character as popular as Nidhiki, collectors will HORDika them all.

All good man, I’m glad we see eye to eye on it.
