BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

Its fine I put like 2 seconds into the Idea

Artahka was less than 40% Sand Green and used a limited amount of Bionicle and Ben 10 pieces. The GSB is gonna be either 100% Pearl Gold Bionicle/CCBS or a System/CCBS mix. Either way we have major part shortages.

Annona has a full description to the point that she could exist as a MOC entry. Tren Krom is a lesser case, but we literally know more about his appearance than Toa Naho. We could 100% have a contest for them. We won’t mostly due to them being, as you said possibly incomprehensible beings but also because they’re purely organic or metaphysical beings in a robotic/organic blend world. Like the GSB.

Actually it was a failure at comedy. However on the Piraka head part, it could go either way.

You missed my point. He literally has no purpose outside of being a statue and raising the cost of Pearl Gold. It’s not about him standing still, it’s the fact that’s the only reason we want a physical version. To be a statue. Every other character can at least be doing something or looking cool but he’s just standing there, maybe with his arms raised. Like Artahka at least can work his forge or be shown making the Toa Mata. What’s the GSB gonna do?
The art at least can show him fighting Annona, getting out of the vat or raising the castle. Maybe even a shot of the Skakdi all bowing before him. All things that are difficult to replicate in a physical medium, be it not having a Skakdi army, Annona not having a physical canon appearance or having to make a Bionicle scale Castle.

I agree the art doesn’t need something to be based on, but my point is there’s no reason for a physical version of him. Every other character can stand still sure, or fight enemies, search for Masks, have epic poses, etc.

The GSB stands there looking at people to fight them or raises a castle with maybe the raise of a hand.

I mean of you can show me the scene where he sucker punches Annona or literally does anything physical by moving his body to attack, I’ll 100% take back my point. But from what we’ve seen his only power is dream stuff or telekinesis. Meaning he has to stand still in a fight, not making cool poses or doing anything besides staring at his enemy.

Artahka on the other hand fulfils his role quite well: being a maker who can be posed making things. He can even be posed fighting things reluctantly.

Look as much as I think it’d be great to give MOCCists a chance to make him, he literally has no purpose for being a physical representation outside of being a statue. I’m not gonna support a contest that makes an expensive statue. Like genuinely what would you do with him?

Personally I think a GSB contest would be good. Being described as skinned makes me think CCBS and System would suit him better, we have some great system pearl gold to work with and some shades of brown or yellow would match the colour scheme and be used for the technic frame areas. And CCBS shells would be perfect for abs…

I imagine him as the ā€œintellectual giga-chadā€ type, quietly standing by seemingly a brute only to pop a wise one-liner to quell argument.

But I can see how going to art straight away could be fun.

The only reason why I’m worried about GSB…
Probably a lot of MOCs use Irnakk spine, but it’s really hard to get, at least because it’s never been released in my counrty… (Instead, there’s another cool piraka combiner.)

And I’m not talented in making big MOCs. Hahaha.

Nitpick, not directed at any person, more at a trend I’ve seen brought up over the last few months:

I think that the concern of a given contest/moc potentially raising prices/lowering stock of a given part or class of parts should absolutely not play into how the contests are run/planned, and what mocs can win. Having each moccist have to think about whether a given part choice could negatively affect the used part economy is way, way, way too much of a restriction to invoke, either officially or unofficially.

On the topic of GSB in particular though:

I don’t think we need to worry about his distinctly unarmored appearance. I think in terms of the MOC, we have enough precedence with some other sets (I’m too lazy to think of a specific example ATM, but the only 15% biomechhanical sets of 2009 come to mind, pick one) using distinctly mechanical-looking parts, with the understanding that it’s not like that in-story. The art can make the more muscled appearance more obvious, I don’t see it as a problem.

I do think that all of these contests still need both an art and moc portion, though. I think the appeal of the results are BOTH in being able to build essentially a new set (even if only the most extreme collectors ever will), and being able to have a canon image. It’d be a shame to remove the one or the other, unless there was an extreme edge case (energized protodermis entity, for example?).

Food for thought for all the creatives in this community looking to enter any of the remaining Toa contest. Since the Toa species is really well defined I think some of the points brought up in this video can be really helpful in making faithful Toa entries.

Look I’m all for getting characters who can be posed actually doing things. The GSB is the only character on the list who has the case of him being a glorified statue with dream powers. Even Varian has more situations you could put her in, especially if you include Norik.

If the GSB actually moved or even fought someone else I’d actually be supporting this, save for me not being a fan of rising costs (I’d still be ok in the end with whatever won, just prefer not paying a crud ton for parts).

My major problem is the fact we have to canonize a physical model for a character who’s basically a brick wall in 99% of his appearances. (The other 1% is a wall that fell over). Like if you forced me to choose canonizing the MOC of the GSB or ANY other named character, I’d choose canonizing the other character. Because even Kodan has more you can do with him than the GSB.

Thanks for the video suggestion!

one question at this point.

I’m making my own tuyet right now.

I was curious about one of the processes.

Is this considered illegal? It’s hard for me to judge.

It is not necessary, but if the gear function is maintained, it was pretty good mod that gives gear fixation.

so i wanted to ask

That is quite the genius connection. No clue if it’s illegal, but it doesn’t look like it.

I wouldn’t think it is, given that the tire is rubber.

Wait till you see the friction mod on my Tuyet…

That’s the one thing I kinda wish I could add for my Tuyet, but I went the custom body route.

That being said, which type of Tuyet do you think will win? I’m thinking Metru Torso has a pretty good chance, while custom body isn’t looking so good right now. It’s the whole thing of wanting it to look like it came from the original G1 line, rather than a cool but ultimately clashing style to it.

Wow that’s genius.

I’d say keep it. Illegal connections aren’t against the rules, only discouraged if they could damage parts. I don’t see how this technique could damage any parts. I’m pretty sure LEGO’s actually done something like this in official sets anyway.

My guess is that a Metru torso will win purely by there being so many. I personally don’t care one way or another.

Oh man nice technique.
Additionally, how was that mask printed? It looks good

I wouldn’t say so. Rubber parts are generally allowed to be deformed without being considered an illegal connection. The only concern for an illegal connection would be if the tire prevents the gear from fully sitting in its cavity. Does the flat bevel gear push on the little bit of the hips inside the gearbox, or is it in its normal spot?

Also, just out of curiosity, how does the friction work? Does the tire rotate around the inside of the torso, or does the bushing rotate inside the tire?

The problem is that when put a tire in the hole, it gets a little stuck.

However, tire and bush are the same thickness.(half stud)
so the gear is in the normal position

When i put in bush, the gear friction becomes extremely stiff because the bush rotates inside the tire.

As always, my friend’s resin printer

One more question here.
I printed that mask in 95% size, not the basic size. The basic size was too big.
Is this allowed, too?
The 3D modeling file is galva’s, that shared it can be used freely, but I think there will be a problem.

It’s a temporary mask, but… I’m curious.

I tried the technique out myself and you can get the tire out pretty easily with an axle with stopper.

The technique is discrete and works really well, but you’re right, it’s stiff.

I’m sure that should be fine. I’ve had to do the same myself. There’s some kind of scaling discrepancy that gives resin prints disproportionately large connection points. You could always print the mask out at it’s normal size and file down the axle. But a 5% difference in scale isn’t that noticeable, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Here’s a question from me.

Some mask models out there are only designed to fit a specific type of head. Say a mask I want to use can’t fit a Mata head, but it’s just barely off. possibly the fault of my resin printer…

Could I file down the inside just a little so it fits? Or would that be considered a

?

If the piece isn’t designed to fit on a particular head, and you have to modify it by wearing it down/cutting it, then that wouldn’t be allowed.

If it’s a custom piece that would fit on the head and your print is just off, and you sand that down so it fits, then that is fine.

@Eljay, I have a another question for a secure entrying.

In other words, ā€œabrasion as a modification to change the functional intent of the pieceā€ is prohibited.
And ā€œif there is a problem such as the print shifting, it is permissible to abrasion as a correctionā€.

And after I buy a Mask from Shapeways, I often ā€œpolishā€ it to smooth out any rough surfaces or jagged edges.
In this case, I don’t intend to change the design itself in any way, and just polishing mask to make it look more presentable, is this allowed? :no_mouth:

That is completely fine, and I imagine expected when it comes to 3D printed masks. What I was talking about was like, say the longer Volitak axle made it unusable on a Mata head. Someone wouldn’t be allowed to sand down the axle so that it did work. That’d be damaging the piece and altering it.
