Now, the story of Bionicle really begins on a huge planet, but that’s later on. The main story of Bionicle begins on an island city. Wait, that’s not quite right either. Huh, how did it go again? We build heroes? We were great, Toa-heroes? hmm…

Ah yes, now I remember…

Gathered friends, listen again to our legends of the Bionicle… In the time before time, the Great Spirit, Mata Nui, descended from the heavens, carrying we, the Matoran. We were scattered, and without purpose, so the Great Spirit blessed us with the three virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny. But our happiness was not to last. Mata Nui’s brother, Makuta, grew jealous of him, casting a spell to send him into a deep sleep. However, there was still hope, for the Great Beings sent us 6 heroes, the Toa.

I can’t really put it into any better words than I did here. Although, this is more of what it means to me…

BIONICLE starts off on the mysterious island of Mata Nui. A matoran villager named Takua gathered six special stones called Toa Stones, and was blasted onto a beach, where he suffered from a mild amnesia. He woke up, hours later to find a large, metal canister that was oddly pill-shaped had crashed on the beach. Footprints lead away from the wreckage, to the south. The curious matoran followed the footsteps until he came across an active lava flow. He decided he would turn back. He found another matoran, a blue one called Macku, waving to him. He walked up to her, and she told him that her village was under attack by some kind of monster. Takua had the matoran use her boat to bring him to the village.

Short Version:

Bionicle is the story of two brothers; Mata Nui and Makuta. Over the years Makuta became jealous of Mata Nui and poisoned him. Although the poison did not kill Mata Nui, it made him fall into a coma. When Mata Nui fell into his coma the villages fled to a distant island to escape Makuta, but Makuta followed them.

After a thousand years of tyranny, a prophesy was made that six heros (or Toa) would defeat Makuta and restore Mata Nui. As prophesied, the six heros washed ashore the island and began there quest to defeat Makuta. The Toa fought and eventually defeated Makuta and awakened Mata Nui. Once awake, Mata Nui defeated and destroyed Makuta once and for all.

Longer Version:

Bionicle is the story of two brothers; Mata Nui and Makuta. Over the years Makuta became jealous of Mata Nui and poisoned him. Although the poison did not kill Mata Nui, it made him fall into a coma. When Mata Nui fell into his coma the villages fled to a distant island to escape Makuta, but Makuta followed them.

After a thousand years of tyranny, a prophesy was made that six heros (or Toa) would defeat Makuta and restore Mata Nui. As prophesied, the six heros washed ashore the island and began there quest to defeat Makuta. The Toa fought and eventually defeated Makuta.

With Makuta defeated the the villages traveled back to their homeland. The Toa asked the village elders for guidance on how to awaken Mata Nui. The elders told many story of the past. They also told that the only thing that could awaken Mata Nui was the mask of Life which lay on the island of Voya Nui.

The Toa set for the island of Voya Nui, but soon found they were not the only ones who desired the Mask of Life. The Toa were soon defeated and captured by Slavers, and only escape with the help of six new heros called the Inkia. The Inkia fought and defeated the Slavers, but in the battle the Mask of Life fell into to ocean. The Inkia dived into the ocean to retrieve the masks and after fighting many sea monsters they were victorious.

But the Inkia’s victory was tainted with sadness, for they learned in the deep that Mata Nui was already dead. For after a thousand years the poison had finally done it’s work. The only hope now was the Mask of Life which had the power to bring the dead back to life. But there was a cost, and the cost was that someone would have to willingly give up his own life. One of the Inkia donned the mask and sacrificed himself to bring back Mata Nui.

The Toa and the Mask a Life then traveled to an underground shrine where the they could awaken Mata Nui. The Toa had to fight through many of Makuta minions. Once at the shrine they placed the Mask of Life on the dais and awakened Mata Nui.

Victorious they returned home only to find something had gone terribly wrong. For when the Body of Mata Nui died, Makuta had taken over it. Makuta now had all of Mata Nui’s power and had trapped Mata Nui’s Spirit in the Mask of life, which Makuta cast into space.

Mata Nui eventually worked his way back and Defeated Makuta.

(NOTE: When you explain something as complex as Bionicle to someone else, you have to keep it simple as you can.)

Whenever somebody asks to be explained the story of Bionicle, I always point them towards the MNOG. Don’t bother with condensing 10 years of story, just show them this game.

Alright, Vakama.

BIONICLE (bi-yon-icle) (Noun): 1. The Biological Chronicle told by Chroniclers in the BIONICLE story. 2. The Lego Theme.

BIONICLE is a legend like no other, with six mighty heroes falling from the heavens, with no memory of their past, and collect masks of power in order to defeat the dark forces of evil that have overcome the land.

Dangit, now I must explain the entire story in full detail.

But another time. I feel lazy.

This is seriously the BEST (if incomplete) introduction to the BIONICLE storyline I have ever seen. Gotta love LEGO’s 2008 promo material.

Indeed. I need to write all that down in the video sometime… It would help me explain it a lot better.

A bunch of sorta-robots who live inside a giant robot fight evil sorta-robots that who are also in the giant robot. The big robot falls asleep and good robots fight bad robots to wake up the big robot which is secretly part of the main evil robot’s evil plan to become the big robot. The evil robot wins and the big robot gets turned into mask and later a smaller big robot. The two big robots fight and the good sorta-robots win.

Oh, there were desert people but we kind of forget about them because they weren’t maybe-robots.

Exactly. I really don’t think Bionicle is something that can be told, it has to be experienced. The MNOG is the perfect way to introduce someone to it.
