Mangiru - The Mindcrafter (Gilahu's BP Makuta revamps)

Name: Mangiru
Kanohi: Paakhu, Great Mask of Holding
Assigned region: Kadrah
Status: Dead

The last of the Makuta who was brought into being by the Great Spirit, Mangiru felt his position within the Brotherhood to be heavily overshadowed by this minor fact. To show that his capabilities were no less than those of his brethren, he launched multiple ambitious Rahi projects, but these largely went unnoticed in the mass of Rahi created in the Brotherhood’s early days.

Eventually, in order to stick out and make a name for himself, Mangiru set his goal on something none of the other Makuta had even tried - the creation of fully sapient Rahi on a level with the population of the Matoran Universe. His proposition, however, was met with skepticism and ridcule. A few Makuta considered it borderline sacrilegious to attempt anything like it. Others wondered about the possible dangers - given for example what became of the Zyglak as creations who were never intended to be a part of MU society by the Great Beings. Many simply considered it a waste of time - why spend time and effort on creating something the ecological niche of which was already filled by a plethora of other species and which was too independent of mind to be controlled by the Makuta?

But Mangiru would not be dissuaded. Millennia later, after refining Rahi mind structures to the point where they were suitable for his needs, he presented his brethren with his first prototype - a Matoran-like creature he named “Paike”.
From a scientific perspective, this did finally force his brethren to acknowledge Mangiru’s skills, but with conflict with the Barraki brewing, Miserix considered further endeavors in this direction too risky - and ultimately still unecessary.

With Paike as his assistant, a disgruntled Mangiru withdrew to the island of Kadrah, which was already home to another of his experimental sapient Rahi species - the Aijuka (Keetongu’s species).
After the Barraki’s downfall, Mangiru was also formally assigned stewardship of the island of Kadrah, but with his creations not being properly apprecited in the known universe, his ambitions drew him into the unknown south where he vanished and was eventually considered dead.

Surprisingly enough, he resurfaced millennia later - and by this fact caused a bit of a headache to teridax who was by now in charge of the Brotherhood. Mangiru was unawares of the Plan. Mangiru had not been present at the Convocation. Would he be aligned with the goal of Teridax’s Brotherhood, or might be become a dangerous liability?
It was finally decided that Mangiru was to be considered and dealt with the same as the five Makuta who once sided with Miserix - and with him, his sapient creations that were beyond Brotherhood control should be eliminated as well. Makuta Xirok, head of the Brotherhood’s forces in the south of the universe, led an expeditionary force of Visorak to Kadrah which ended with the (near) extermination of the Aijuka and Mangiru’s death at the hands of his brother.

Nevertheless, Mangiru’s legacy lived on. His work on Rahi mind development was fundamental in the creation of many Rahi species, and even Teridax drew from it when he created teh Karzahni plant and later the Morbuzakh. Ironically, also Chirox’s Visorak drew from Mangiru’s work, only to in the end be used against the one who made their creation possible, or at least easier.

Equipment:
Mangiru’s Mask of Holding allowed him to access a personal pocket dimension in which he could store or from which he could retrieve items. His preferred use of it was as a small mobile workshop.
Not being a fighter, and with the Powers of a Makuta at his access, Mangiru rarely bothered with weapons. He have a liking for claws and horns to appear more fearsome and those avoid trouble to begin with, however.

Revamp of @darkbrick999’s Makuta Mangiru. Originally, he had a slightly diffeernt name, but this was changed in alignment with darkbrick999 a while back.

Comparison of the original (version 2) with mine:

I think what’s clearly apparent is that the original was a bit more of a unique build. A slight bit of it maybe got lost in the translation to my version, but I think all in all one can say it is the same character.
This was actually the first time I did 4 arms and that was more of a challenge than I thought in order to maintain decent poseability. Although probably I didn’t have to bother this much because the upper arms are too heavy to get much poseability out of anyways… (they are also so heavy that they put noticeable stress on the shoulder connections as those Hordika necks are not that well connected in order to allow the shaping of the upper torso)
I also have to say - in his “main” position, my Mangiru has a nice look to him, but as soon as the upper arms are posed any other way, it’s not very pretty - in part of course also because those wing pieces are stiff. But I like the main pose, so right now I’m satisfied. Will I still be in a couple years? No idea, but we’ll see.

Lastly, I also have this picture - not sure what the goal here was, but have it, I guess:

That’s Makuta 28 (but that’s counting Isthra who is currently in the re-revamp process). Planned right now is to finish Isthra, then re-revamp Fenerak so I can put him next to the re-revamp of Vulon (which is finished but I haven’t taken pictures yet). Besides those, I’ll have to see which Makuta I want to tackle next.

Anyways, hope you enjoy, and as usual C&C appreiacted!

Honestly losing the wacky proportions and aesthetic of the original is a bit unfortunate, but the drastic improvements in the legs and especially the wings are worth it. I don’t like backstories that presume to fill voids that don’t need filling (Keetongu’s species name for example), but I assume that’s not your concoction.

Seeing that you’ve made 27 of these guys and are rapidly construction the 28th, it’s honestly impressive the amount of effort you’re putting into what is one of the largest community collabs ever. Keep it up!

I love the torso and the upper arms/wings! The wing design in general is quite distinct, and the mask is well-designed. If I had two criticisms, they would be the Metru feet on the upper legs, whose shape feels a little strange, and the yellow angled connectors on the knees, which feel a little out-of-place. Still, those are very small concerns. Excellent work, as usual!

I really like how the mask/head turned out!

This looks like the Batman equivalent of Spider-doppelgänger.

Wings might be my favorite part. They’re a bit gappy, but that’s about the best you can do with the premade bat wing pieces, and it still looks cohesive enough to give him a nice silhouette.
