I wish there was a way notifications could be made non-email dependent as that seems to be causing the trouble.

I dunno.
Email notifcations can be disabled.
I personally believe it to be caused by the 20 thousand post 2016 topic.

Please try to keep PM conversations to a maximum of 8,000 messages. After this point, a new conversation should be started to take it’s place.

Overuse of a single conversation is extremely taxing on the boards and can cause the entire site to perform sluggishly and harm image uploads.

I just don’t see why this shouldn’t be applied to regular Topics too…
