I’m confused as to where exactly the axle is stuck that it can’t be taken out.

take something small, like a toothpick, and dab a bit of glue on the end. Set it on the axle, let it dry a bit, and then pull the axle out.
or just yknow
use that toothpick to push the axle from the opposite side
this gearbox is extremely open, it’s not like the closed gearboxes of the rahkshi
