I am looking for some critique of my rendition of Toa Zaria. I want a separate point of view for reference so I might adapt his build a little.
While the way Stud.io handles colors is going to need to be worked with in editing, I’m happy to announce that this model is 100% unpainted Lego, sans the mask of course.
The feet feel very flat and out of place. There’s basically no other silver in the figure itself outside of the silver tubes in the legs, which don’t fit in too well either. (The silver on the weapon can stay though.) I also don’t like that the feet are only held in by a half-module length of axle.
I’m also not a fan of the mixing of old and new greys but I understand you were trying to avoid painted parts so that’s understandable.
The hips and ankles worry me a bit since they appear to use the voodoo ball rather than the through-hole balljoints.
Aside from those issues this seems like a pretty solid design overall, the chest and spear in particular have some fun shapes and textures going on.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the colors are a little off, but when you compare the real pieces it’s not as blatant, so I chalk it up more to Stud.io’s graphics.
And, I see your point about half-connections, though for the feet there’s a little more to it.
The ball joint connector piece is locked in place due to there only being ~1 stud width of space where the axel adapter is situated, and it sits mostly flat on the bushing and back side of the shield piece.
I had hoped the Technic/Slizer foot piece would be viewed as part of the foot bulk, as it leads to the ankle joint, but that’s what I’m asking for these other perspectives, right?
Not trying to show up your critiques- I do appreciate them- I’m just trying to provide a little more context. I’ll probably need to provide this context somehow when I officiate the design, so this is good practice.
I’m not sure about the hose. It just comes out of nowhere and breaks up the shape. I think either get rid of the hose, or add more hose (remember, you can always use shorter dark orange hose & say you have to cut it).
Also, try another kanohi and another colour for the kanohi…. Like this one (cause I gotta shill for myself).
You’ld be surprised how much changing the kanohi colour will have a dramatic difference.
I would recommend, like iylv said, switching up the mask. Additionally, change the upper arms and chest to something with more mechanical-y bits. Currently most of your build is very rough in texture so the smooth mask, chest, and Bohrok eyes on the upper arms stick out quite a bit. iylv’s mask would fit pretty well in my opinion, very wide and not too tall.
If you can find a chest piece that fits into what you have currently, I think you can keep the hose. Just, maybe add some more to make it look intentional. Currently it looks a bit like a roll cage which kind of suits a heavy-duty Toa of Iron who probably runs into things like a tank. Try branching more tubs out the sides of the ones you currently have to really sell the metal beam look.
For me, the highlight of this moc is the shin guard choice
Aren’t there more pieces with such pitted look? If so maybe consider adding some elsewhere. I think it would look good on a Toa of Iron
Done. I didn’t really like the Bohrok eyes too much myself. With this design, there’s more flat silver, tubing, and less smoothness. Though it is a less solid build connection for the upper arm, it should still hold itself decently.
Heresy! (Even if technically legal.)
I see what you mean about the mask. While I wanted to use the canon-design mask of adaptation, I guess I’m also fine considering Zaria’s mask power left unknown. But now I’m strung up between iylv’s and Kodiak’s designs.
Kodiak’s fits the angularity of the upper build and has more tubing aesthetic with a perfect size, while iylv’s has a more tough and rough atmosphere that fits the armor but is a little big. Which do you think looks better?
Sadly, to my knowledge, there’s not much more of an option to this. There are only two pieces that match this pitted look, as far as I know. Before this chest design, I played around with using Hewkii’s Inika shoulder armor, but it didn’t have as fitting of a shape, and took away some from the slim-buff build I’m going for. The only other piece that fits the shape and pitted aesthetic is Stringer’s Savage Planet bear helmet, but it’s only available in black, and I don’t feel right making a major piece of armor have a tertiary support color. And, I definitely don’t want to go the greeble brick-built route.
Thanks for the catch! I did incorporate a half-plate buffer originally to work with this issue, but it seems like it didn’t get transferred properly between saves. It’s more articulate now.
I personally prefer the canon shape that you had in the original version, both from personal preference to avoid Kanohi variants, and because I simply like the look of it. The two variants you have here are a bit too “tech-y” for my taste.
Also, I really like the tube; it almost looks like a “collar” of sorts. I do have some questions about it though.
First, what’s going on here?
Why not just attach the tube with pins?
Second, am I correct in seeing that the tube is held in place on his back by a rubber band? Would you be able to provide a closeup of how that’s all set up?
I would just call it another mask all together. They don’t even look like variants to me.
Yes, this is the intention behind it.
The pins are a little too bulky, and don’t allow for the tubes to split out for proper clearance. The flex-tubing here is my solution- making it held in place with the friction of the flex-tube and pulled back by the shaping.
Looks good to me. Try changing those orange connectors to silver, though.
Kodiak’s doesn’t really mesh with the rest of the armor besides the chest plate, too round. I think iylv’s fits better with more of the design, but I’d agree it’s a touch too big. Maybe you can get him to remove the side protuberances and replace them with some of those tube things like on Kodiak’s?
