So, in other news, Gareth Edwards and Kathleen Kennedy both commented very candidly on the much-debated reshoots R1 is undergoing–both stressed that they’re just minor additions, and that the story of R1 hasn’t changed at all. This article goes into more depth about it:
I think we can safely say these rumors of the film being “dumbed down” for younger audiences are false.
Anyway, I’m getting more excited for this movie by the month! One if the most interesting bits of information I’ve heard is that Rogue One might not have an opening text crawl, seeing as how it is not a numbered Star Wars Film. Disney is going back and forth on the fence about that, My guess is that they’ll have an opening crawl ready, but won’t use it.
As for my opinion, I’m okay with Rogue One not having a traditional title crawl, but I’d prefer if they leave it in.
As am I. The numbered movies have to have the crawl, but all the spin-off stuff such as Clone Wars and Rebels, its ok if it doesn’t have a crawl. Actually, I wish that Rebels had an opening Tom Kane narration.
I’ve seen news sites say “but it won’t be Star Wars without the opening crawl!”. No, just no. Good Star Wars is good Star Wars. Some nostalgic expository fluff isn’t gonna change the quality of the film. Quite frankly, I think that a crawl would clash with the alleged tone of the film.
Now that you mention it, an opening narration would be a welcome replacement. The numbered films have the crawl, and the standalones could have a narration. Sounds like a great compromise if you ask me.
I think an opening narration would work, because it could easily be given in a tone that matches the film, perhaps even by a main character (Pipe Dream: An opening narrative in Darth Vader’s voice ). I liked how TCW replaced the crawl with a narration written in that style, so something like that would really separate Rogue One from the other movies while keeping the Star Wars feel…
But if it’s a choice between the traditional crawl and no crawl/narration at all, then I want a crawl. It just seems like a necessary thing…
I’m still kind of hoping that Starkiller pops up at the end of Rogue One instead of Vader. Probably won’t happen but it would be nice. Maybe he could be introduced as an inquisitor in Rebels.
I can definitely agree with you on the abundance of nostalgia. But I’d also argue that TFA stands on it’s own merits as good cinema (even without all the nostalgic embellishments).
Usually when they say trailer, they mean trailer. Plus that would be pointless since they uploaded it today. This clip was supposed to be for the Star Wars celebration thing.
I agree with @Chronicler, I doubt it’ll be the reel all over again–they specifically said it would be a trailer, and there was a secret trailer screened at the panel that wasn’t shown on the livestream, which had new footage and–according to those who saw it–seemed to be a fragment of a larger trailer. My guess is they got a sneak peek of the trailer we’ll all see tonight.
If it is the sizzle reel, I’ll be disappointed, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world…
