Mako fully endorses this message.
Name: Dr. Connor Newton
Personality: He is a bit of a gentleman, some might say. He often dresses up nice, seems to not be very argumentative, except for his stern beliefs. Indeed, he is a man of high morals, taking the concept of the Hippocratic oath seriously. He also is a man of refined tastes.
Weapons: A knife, often a tool of his surgical procedures. He also is armed with a regular cutlass.
Armor: The fine clothing he wears on his back. He wears a cravat, has his hair in a tied knot, and a fine coat.
Job on a ship: Ship physician.
Backstory: Dr. Newton did not make his first earnings as a ship doctor. He was a physician on the mainland. However, times fell tough for him as he found himself in debt trying to help his wife, who had a terminal illness. She died, and he found himself hounded by the debt collectors until he had nothing left but the clothing on his back. He skipped town, looking for work as a travelling physician, until he saw that the Armada was hiring for a ship doctor. He took the job, not quite realizing what he was in for.

If things were a little less vague in the main sign up post, it would help.
I can cook with this, actually
Yeah my bad, I’m kinda not the best at organization.
No it’s fine. It’s probably a little too late to join this anyways. Seems like y’all are in the middle of a story.
Nonsense, we can squeeze ya in. Thanks to @NOTaHFfan and @Ghid I have the perfect opening.
Unfortunately we don’t do gunpowder weapons in the world (Just not the vibe I’m going for) but everything else looks good, of you’re still interested I can PM you to discuss some more stuff for your character.
No I’m just gonna forgo it.
Shame, would’ve loved to have ya. If you change your mind lemme know.
Truth be told, I went through the whole story again, and it sounds like an actual book.
However, I have noticed character development, and wanted to converse through it.
Dolphus & Ari: Dolphus started out as a belligerent hater and covered himself up with a metaphorical mask, which throughout the story has gradually been taken off to reveal who he truly is. He’s become more than what he was, now truly a great character. Ari almost seems like a counterpart to him now, showing genuine affection and care, as if he was a brother. I already enjoy this dynamic, and where it’s headed. @Ghid , @NOTaHFfan , keep up the good work
Alexis: Now things get fuzzy here, but you can see Alexis also growing into the role of Captain, being a beacon of leadership. Again, nice job @N01InParticular .
Mako: God, this character is so special to me.
What started out as just a basic idea soon became a person with a complex emotional backdrop. Probably not completely close, but hey, it’s pretty hard for me to clear it all up.
Mako is a close opposite to Dolphus, noting that his devotion of magic and to the sea god is a contrast to Dolphus hatred for magic. He’s also constantly alone, again, as an opposite to Dolphus. Mako is still processing all that has happened to him, and pushes people away as a result. Still, I cannot believe how far we’ve gotten.
And for the others, there certainly is material, I justed wanted to note the ones that stuck with me the most.
Oh? Let’s see…
I’m glad it’s been noticed, but… a Belligerent mask?

So far in the rp (and its connected short stories), Dolphus has only ever picked a fight once in his entire life, and he got stopped by a barrel. He’s never gone out of his way to be combative or overtly hostile to anyone unprovoked, although he has definitely tried to enforce his assertiveness with the mask, but if that was the intent behind the word choice I would’ve swapped it with dominant or commanding.
The characters certainly seem to feel this way, but in actuality most of what Alexis has done is challenge people needlessly and question authority on a regular basis, coming off to Mariner as insubordinate and to Tharos as accusatory. Most everyone else either isn’t around her enough to pick up on things, or is Dolphus, who is blinded by his attachment to her to do any thinking on his own.
Although now that Ari’s disarmed that a bit, he may have a different opinion…
I think how you view Mako and how he comes off to the rest of the cast differs a little.
To most everyone else, Mako better fits the definition of belligerent, picking fights for little to no reason, constantly getting offended at the slightest jabs, and hounding other characters in hostile fashion over things those characters view as personal or pointless. He chose to stomp out of the first captain vote, making him look bad in the eyes of the crew, and has constantly made decisions of a similar nature which color him as rude, strange, and a little unwell.
His constant undoing of his bandage mask for shock value has only ever worked on Karl, who got over it in an instant. Every other character who’s seen him like that has come to the conclusion that there must be something up with his face or he wouldn’t be bandaging himself. Add in his hearing voices, seeing things that no one else sees, and now his accusing Mariner of being the God of the sea based on the fact that he got mad once makes him come off as possibly insane as well.
Is he a bad character? Of course not. If characters didn’t exhibit negative traits they’d all be mary sues, and that would be horrible. Dolphus needs to have glaring imperfections or he can’t grow through them as he journeys onward, or be given the opportunity to make things worse. But I don’t think anyone else in the rp views Mako as a pitiable tortured soul when he has done nothing to garner pity or compassion and his deepest character moments are confined to screaming alone in his cabin and being overly mad at the universe.
I’m not sure that’d be best left up to me. He’s your character; I don’t want to say anything that would tailor him away from your vision for his characterization.
Would you have any advice, is what I mean.
