Terrus the Chronicler

So in line with the previous art I posted, here’s another noteworthy ar’ton from ULTRAMagic Alternate:

Before anyone says it, yes, this could have been better. I realized that I was moving on to doing the background and figured forget it, I’ll commit to this drawing given how far I had gotten. And if you think I’m being too harsh on myself, the drawing of Terrus’ friend, Ferdi, turned out better.

Now, time for some lore. I am not bringing all of it over here, so here’s where you can read it: Terrus on Tumblr, Terrus’s friend Ferdi, ULTRAMagic Archive (The lore book)

Anyone familiar with my MOCs… is anyone familiar with my MOCs? Anyways, anyone familiar with them will recognize this as my shadow toa, Terrus. And here you can really see the Bionicle inspiration in not just the design, but Terrus’ character in UMAE which takes inspiration from TAAAKUAAA! I actually had an idea for a character based off of Takua long before I started work on UMAE, but that version of the character never came to fruition. As for Dreamstalker being based off of Makuta, that was a recent thing given that I was musing on how freaky it would be of Ultimate Dume was faifthly adapted into animation (Detailed on DA, the Blogspot Blog, and Newgrounds).

I’ll have to try drawing more ar’ton. I’m doing better, as Terrus actually has more relevance to the story given that he travels around with The Madman and Automaton of Old… but I still haven’t drawn an ar’ton that has physically appeared in the story. Drawing Tereza is going to be interesting.

This feels like a bold enough claim that I should relocate the most recent iteration of the character to see how recognizable he is in this rendition.

Oh.

Well, I suppose that’s what happens after so many years of the Boards. Some of the earlier images just didn’t get hosted properly back in the day; I know I lost a few myself.

As for the artwork, is that a paint tool sai brush or a krita brush I see heavily used in the background? It’s hard to tell if this was meant to be some kind of celestial star trail or a swarm of small, glowing creatures migrating beneath the rocky outcrop. Terrus’s more vibrant portions have an airbrush over exclusively the feet and nowhere else, making it feel like his airbrush layer got masked to the rock layer by mistake.

Overall, solid A for effort and a B+ for execution. I’m assuming this character is meant to be a child/teen given the proportions of his body and face, but the added details make me more and more curious about his backstory. Now it’s simply a question of whether or not I can muster up the courage to venture onto either deviantart or tumblr…

While I did give him the more the youthful appearance-type given his character, he is an adult. I feel that could be inferred given how tall he is and the fact that he’s holding a full length staff, but I suppose I’ll have to remedy this by having him stand next to other characters in future art… or just making it more clear in the future. I’ll concede not properly practicing drawing my characters is a slight fault of mine…

It’s a quirk of The Trench Unlight, which I will admit is easier to tell in Ferdi’s drawing. I found that brush in Krita during Ferdi’s drawing and thought it looked really nice for a sort void-spanning trail of energy and matter. It’s kind of like an ocean current, which is thematically appropiate for The Trench Unlight given that I’ve comparaed it to descending into the deep ocean.

And in regards to the glow beneath Terrus’ feet that was an experiment. Given that the ar’ton are energy beings I figured why not have soft light on the ground instead of a traditional shadow?

And I do highly recommend checking out the lore regardless. It’s not without flaw, I’ll admit, but I do put effort and passion into it.

His height is impossible to determine given his surroundings. He’s not next to anything that is a set height in the real world, and the things that he is near - a fantasy staff and a piece of rock - are never a universal size.

Also, having been in possession of a (sadly, not magical and/or celestial) staff in my childhood, there are certainly different heights for staffs.

It might help to host at least something from the lore of the character on the Boards so it can be directly cited for reference to drawings. The Trench Unlight sounds like a very important element of your story, but unless you can

quote it

most Boards users will feel the extra research to explain what they’re looking at is too much work (I specifically am lazy). Unfortunately the description of the piece does very little to explain anything about what’s happening in the piece, leaving most of it up to interpretation.
