Newport Museum hosts the World’s Largest Pearl

-By Zora Renart
July 16th, 2022

The Newport Nautical History Museum will be hosting the collection of Prescott Wilson, a wealthy financier from Grants Pass, and his prize jewel, the world’s largest pearl. The pearl was recovered in the bay of Newport back in 1998, and purchased by Wilson the following year. The display at the Museum is the first time it will be seen by the public since the purchase.

The pearl has been known for its strange qualities. The pearl, of a pinkish color, has a strange natural mark which has been described as looking like a celtic knot by observers. According to Wilson, when one listens closely to the pearl, it sounds as if they are near the ocean.

Much urban legend also surrounds the pearl. According to the Newport Nautical History Museum, there is legend that the pearl was originally recovered by the Elizabethan explorer Sir Francis Drake, who sailed up the Oregon coast during his circumnavigation of the globe in 1579. In his so-called “New Albion” he uncovered the pearl and displayed it for some time in the court of Queen Elizabeth herself. It was stolen and went missing for hundreds of years.

It would resurface in 1996, when it was discovered to be in the possession of the criminal, the Sea-Witch, who terrorized the coasts of Northern California and Oregon that year. She promptly disappeared after a confrontation with the Emerald-Man, and so did the pearl. It would then be recovered in 1998, where it was put on auction and purchased by Prescott Wilson.

The pearl will be on display in the museum until the end of July, where it will return to Prescott Wilson’s vault, though it will return to museums in Washington in the spring of next year.

Well. Here it is, even earlier than usual. I might have been itching to let secrets go for a while. I’ll probably take longer on the follow up. But for now… Enjoy. And let me know what you think.

I have to say that issue 13 is taking a bit longer to make due to some last minute rewrites. I want it to be entertaining first and foremost. My initial rough draft had too much talking, not enough fun action. So here is a commentary to keep you guys occupied.

Some previews for issue 13. The issue should be ready around mid-September, or at least that is what I am shooting for.

Winged Woman Terrorizes Crime East of the 205 Highway

-By Katie Ellen
August 1st, 2022

Police were called last Thursday when three robbers were found wounded in front of the 9-2-5 Convenience Store in the Centennial district. According to the store owner, Armando Garcia, the three men, dressed in sunglasses and hoodies, robbed him at gunpoint and then fled the store carrying around 300 dollars in cash. They were stopped by a woman dressed in a white uniform and wings descending on them from the top of the gas station. Garcia did not get a good look at the woman, who fled before he could take any pictures.

This was not the only incident in the appearance of this woman. A month ago, police reported seeing a similar individual stalking a local gang shootout, between members of the Valentine crime family and cartel gangsters, where she intervened. Detective Jackson McGee mentioned her wearing “a uniform with blue and white patterns, and posing similar to some type of waterfowl.”

K-Intune News also reports that a similar individual was spotted a year ago in the city of Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah. Some in Denver had first believed it was an appearance of some mysterious bird cryptid. However, police reports, and proper photos, confirmed that it was a woman in a costume.

Denver Police Chief Teddy Faswell reportedly said of the character, “Seems to me she was another costumed character. Sorta like that Axolotl fella in Los Angeles, or that Yellow Rose lady in Houston, or heck, even that Blue Moon vigilante that has been terrorizing New York for ages. Real tired of them sorts of vigilantes, it makes a huge mess for the District Attorney’s office. If they’d just work with the law, we’d welcome their help!”

The question is: what will Emerald-Man do about this winged woman? Is there enough room in town for two costumed heroes?

Do you plan on having this guy make an appearance someday? (I would enjoy seeing how the Emerald-Man lore treats other superheroes, especially how Danu would think of them.)

I have considered a few team up issues if folks are willing. I have a lot of characters in my backlog, I just don’t have time to draw issues for them, since I draw Emerald-Man primarily!

BTW what did you think of this last issue?

The last chapter sent me down an Albion (New Albion=Canada???) rabbit hole and now I’m wondering where the giants are :eyes:

I really like Carolina’s conflict and where here character is left, and trajectory it gives Stephen. Plus the Selkies as a factor add more dimension to the world and I’m a sucker for expanding the world :goo:

It’s actually what Francis Drake called the west coast when he was on his circumnavigation, “Nova Albion”. It’s “discovery” (despite already being settled by the Spanish) gave England justification to colonize the western coast as well as the East, as part of their charter. I made it a place that was supposed to be a magical lost city as well.

TBH when I started this comic I was really afraid people would not like it. (Yes I have always had this story planned from the beginning.) I played a risky game doing this with the primary love interest, I just hope it paid off. I also hope she was a satisfying villain ultimately.

I didn’t originally intend them to be in this issue, merely a one-off appearance. My followers on Twitter/X asked to see more of them. I obliged! And I am glad I did. I got a chance to world build a little bit on more fey.

I liked it quite a lot! It was fun to see other characters from mythology show up in the story. I also liked that Carolina’s story was paced throughout multiple previous issues until the big reveal here. It gave the story a bit more depth than I initially expected.

BTW, ever hear of Paul Bunyan and Stormalong? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes. I was trying to replicate a thing older comic books used to do where they’d build up a mystery over several issues. The initial appearances of the Green Goblin were like this actually, nobody knew his identity for many years.

I knew of Paul Bunyan but Stormalong is new to me (another internet rabbit hole to dive into)

Now we need an issue featuring John Bunyan and Stormalong as heroes helping the Emerald-Men of the 1700s and 1800s… it’ll be really neat seeing how you plan to work similar characters throughout history into the series!
