The Packaging/Promotional Art/Instruction Booklet/Book Mistakes Topic

Also interesting that Sentry II and Gate Defender are in different poses than the box art, while the gate itself and R1 Rammer match the box exactly

One case of rendering error I’ve always found bizarre is this render of the Wolf Legend Beast, where one of its rear legs is in the correct pose but detached from the model for some reason

The recently revealed May 4th Battle Droid Carrier also has a problem with the render where the pilot droid has no legs and is just floating in the driver’s seat

reminds me of THIS mistake on the gorilla ultra beast on his shoulder

that ball joint is just flowing there

Weird how it’s corrected on the actual box art. Only the isolated render has the issue

Wolf box art is even weirder, the detached leg straight up isn’t there

I assume whoever made the renders removed the leg from the 3D model to make the box art look cleaner, but the now detached leg still showed up when the render was isolated… that’s the only explanation I can come up with

The official 3D render for Stars Takanuva shows a white Avohkii, although the actual included mask is pearl light gray.

Blades look a little whitish too

Over time I’ve noticed many errors and mishaps in the catalogs. Do note that there are probably more mistakes I didn’t notice, and I obviously don’t have every catalog either. Here’s the first ones.

2008 catalog

The first page is some sort of brand introduction and has a pretty nice image of kids playing with Lego. The image is clearly edited and pieced together, but doesn’t look bad on first glance. Let’s take a closer look…

These system models are completely out of scale to each other.

I don’t think you can hold the spaceship like that…

Bitil looks about right, but that’s a tiny Axalara!

This guy is holding a remote in his hand - there’s not a single RC model in sight.

I talked about the XXL mobile crane situation before, just gonna mention it again.

Take a look at the two cargo engines, notice anything?
Look at their headlights. These trains indeed have working lights, but the bottom engine depicts them in the wrong spot - only the inner lamps (like on the upper engine) actually light up.
All the engines also seem to have the old style 9V motors with metal wheels, which weren’t used with these sets (and wouldn’t work on the plastic rails anyways).
The passenger train in the back is also missing many of its stickers, only just noticed that.

The desert hammer set is advertised as having a motor, while the set itself only comes with a slammer launcher.

The Mistika page shows the sets standing in a swamp, with really nice reflections in the water. It looks good with the others, but they messed up on Onua.

Pohatu’s left rotor is dislocated and seems to be there twice.

2011 catalog

The image for Creationary is mirrored (question mark cards give it away), and how is that kid holding his card?

The city firefighter diorama is really nice and built entirely with real pieces. Then they added this guy.

Don’t you hate it when the ground clips through your train?

Another bad and out-of-scale edit, this heli is even slightly stretched. And why is that kid so angry?

2014 catalog

These are both from the same page. This chassis piece never existed in either blue or pink, and it’s also a weird choice - at the time, it had already been out of production for almost 10 years.

I think this one was also posted earlier in the thread, the right shoulder is clipping through the socket.

The catalogs also have a lot of typos, really bad and noticeable ones at that.
I’ll probably add more errors when I notice some!

Could be a gigantic child :eyes:

Seems like I should take a look at my catalogues again, too…

I wonder if they included the Phantoka slogan “team up and battle for power” somewhere there, because I remember that in one of the German comics they spectacularly messed up the translation for that. If I recall correctly, it was “Mannschaft hoch und Kampf um Energie”. Which simply makes no coherent sense. Translated back that would be something like “crew upwards and battle for energy”.

Nope, there’s no slogan like that in the catalog. The closest thing would be “Matoraner und Phantoka/Mistika verbünden sich” which is written on all of the Bionicle pages, but that’s a different thing. It’s more of a feature advertisement than a slogan.

that is painful

For what it’s worth, those wind-up parts are still often referred to as motors.

In the Lego.com PDF uploads of the 2010 Hero Factory instructions, some sets are missing the advertisements, instead having this “cross promotion” placeholder. This one was taken from Nebula’s instruction, iirc Rotor has it too. The regular hero sets don’t have this, instead featuring the actual ad.

@TheJerminator my bad, I didn’t know the set also has a pullback! I thought it was just the slammer.

The instructions for 7714 mess up the sticker placement in multiple areas. The foot stickers are placed upside down, making the black parts of the sticker face away from the black foot soles. The unit designation stickers have also switched shoulders compared to how they’re supposed to be placed, meaning the Golden Guardian won’t match any other battle machine, all of which all have the number and symbol the other way round

The box render shows the correct placement

7700 Stealth Hunter also has some sticker inconsistencies.

For starters, the stripes on the “wings” are shown differently in the instructions as compared to the box art:

(Note the thicker stripes being at the base on the box art, but at the tip in the instructions)

The other difference is in the text on the left shin. Both of the above images show the same orientation, but the text is upside down. The proper orientation is shown in what I believe is an official image of the set:

(Also, for those wondering, note which shoulders the Air Force logo and “serial number” are on, as it pertains to the above post)

More 2005 City Construction bizarreness!

7344 differs in construction between the box and the way the instructions tell you to build it. If you go by the instructions you’ll end up with this. It looks a bit awkwardly stretched out from the side, and there’s a rather large gap between the bed and cab structure that doesn’t look all too good

On the box, the rear wheels are attached much further forward. This can be most clearly noticed by counting the number of technic holes visible on the side beam, and acknowledging that the back bumper is now actually visible from the side profile

IMG_7976

The gap between the bed and cab has been reduced too, to just one stud rather than two. The support beam for the bed has also been moved forward! I’ve circled it in the picture:

IMG_7977

The instructions tell you to attach the beam here.

When attached in the position shown on the box, it’ll directly line up with the conspicuous row of eight empty studs nearby, rather than crossing an unnecessary 1x4 gap. The box position not only looks better, but is also far more sturdy.

Shifting the bed and wheels forward like the box shows does wonders for the overall silhouette, which convinces me that this was the way the set was intended to be assembled and the people making the instructions completely messed up

The names and set numbers for Takua and Jaller have been mixed up in Takanuva’s instructions.

I remember Pridak’s manual. Canister and set had blue eyes, instructions had red eyes

This is in 42053’s instructions. First, you build this panel sub-assembly which then gets attached to the main build:

You see that system slope right there?

On the actual model, it’s not there. This is normal, and it’s a rendering error in the instructions.

The next step (flipping the panel down) shows it normally.

This isn’t on a packaging, instruction or art, but it’s an official display made by Lego so I’ll put it here. Came across this photo from a 2013 Hero Factory event that happened in Legoland Windsor.

Loved that app. Wish it was still available, as it was really neat seeing Hero characters that were never made as sets (mostly due to impossible helmet designs).
