Unconfirmed Phantom Images

In theory, I agree that Greg would want to avoid promoting one fan build above the rest.

However, Ancient already got that special treatment, and I haven’t heard many complaints.

Interesting theories about the yari and the mantas tamer as well. Those could very well be the reasons they were not made official. Perhaps there are similar reasons for the last two Dark Hunter models not being requested.

If we could ask greg anything, it would be if he remembers the essay or model of phantom, and if he thinks that the phantom model should be canon due to everything lining up in a realistic sense. It’s clear why yari’s letter was different, it wasn’t meant to be put in initially. The yari’s creator once posted a comment on reddit about how he wasn’t asked to send his model in, and only received free sets rather than a signed book copy. Casey got a book because had his phantom model been sent in on time, his model would have appeared in it in 06

I’d like to point out that I don’t know if the essay was lost/destroyed. I said that as speculation, not absolute fact. It’s possible Greg has a folder somewhere with all the winning essays.

It would’ve probably been destroyed six months after being received.

Huh
I thought Greg said they were required to destroy the pictures. But he says “anything like that” which could include the essays.

Would be nice for someone to update BS01, since we are sure that this is real, but not if it is Phantom or not

What page would this go on, if we are not sure it is Phantom?

My first guess would be the Dark Hunter Contest page, but that doesn’t exist.

It would be relegated to the Competitions page. Likely as a link to the photo rather than a photo itself given how clustered the images on that page already are.

Winners of the Rahi contest also received a couple of signed books.

As mentioned prior; some such as the Yari creator apparently didn’t; and it is mentioned here:

In contrast to the Dark Hunter contest:

Slightly unrelated sidenote, but the “MantasTamer” rahi name is unknown, as MantasTamer is the username for the guy who built it. Only mention I could find of him online was one archived question the user had on the Ask Greg forums

EDIT: The build is actually called the MantasTamer, named after the guy who built him, and we have decent verification that it was actually a contest winner Mask Of Destiny

Hey, I made a Stud.io model a few days ago and assigned the new and old grays with help from LegoDetective. Here’s a link to a folder with instructions, apologies for any inaccuracies that may be present.

Assume all grays are old unless a color guide appears on the page. The Mata feet are the only unmarked bley pieces that also come in old gray.

Oh! Til - good to know.

That’s good to know, but you know what would be even better to know:

What does it look like in motion?

Does a video exist?

As far as I know that one brickshelf link is all that exists of it. I think it would be a worthwhile cause to post around about it, see if MantasTamer is still out there somewhere, as if he is telling the truth, who knows, this actually could be a decent Rock Lion candidate

Even if no one can contact the original builder, I think it is still replicable from the images given.

I would try it myself, but all my parts are packed away since I’m at university right now. (And one of my Manas motors is busted)

Could you link the MantasTamer Rahi? I don’t believe I’ve ever actually seen it

I got with LegoDetective but as far as I can tell all colors are accurate except for the beam on step 1. It’s actually a dark silver color. (I have no idea what I was thinking)

Ah I can see that now. I’ll update the instructions. Thanks!

Edit: Updated instructions should be up (same link)
