I think when the people who just had them as toys find out about the extensive storyline and the fact that the whole entire story past the point where it ended was created 2 years before the first sets where released. Or maybe the fact that you can create what you want with them too. they where definitely the impacts to me.

It changed the way LEGO approached everything when it came to an original line. Marketing, fan interaction, storytelling, etc. The line basically saved LEGO back when it came out because it had had a horrible year in 2000. Now, they’ve bounced back and are doing better than ever.

BIONICLE introduced fun toys to the McDonald’s Happy Meal!! Love those happy little men with their happy little Happy Meal plates!! 
I think bionicle’s biggest impact was inspiring lego to continue world-building among their themes, the themes with the most story have sold the best
Bionicle laid the groundwork for other story themes, like Ninjago.
Ninjago was such a powerhouse that it killed all other story themes, including bionicle.
Bionicle killed bionicle.
