Because I’d say it already is. It is currently ranked 818th of the best over all albums by users on BestEverAlbums.com and has an average rating of 68.
That’s pretty good for an album released by a not so beloved band on a website that despises rock music made after 2000 and tends to favor mostly classic rock and hipster indie rock.
Outside of the circles of music critics, I think everyone loves Linkin Park, at least for people under 40. they’re currently sitting as the 29th most listened to artist in the world on Spotify, better than stuff like AC/DC or Metallica, though that could be due to their releasing something this month or a younger listener base on Spotify. The band has also been a considerable influence on the current brand of hard rock and metalcore for a while.
Meteora specifically? I doubt it gets as many commendations as Hybrid Theory.
For the record, quite a few people on this site have struggled with clinical depression and survived suicide attempts, myself included. The level of self discipline I had to conjure in order to overcome that mental illness without dousing myself in prescriptions was significant. We may be emotional, but no one of us is in any way cowardly for it. Chester Bennington endured more than anyone’s fair share of drug addiction, abuse and molestation; that sort of experience comes with a heavy emotional burden. Sometimes we don’t win the fight. The fact that he kept himself upright as long as he did deserves respect, not condescension.
I think whether or not Meteora gains the status in question is up to the listener. I grew up with Linkin Park, and in my opinion Meteora is one of the greatest rock albums of all time, but no doubt there are millions who will disagree. To each their own.
I grew up listening to Linkin Park. In my opinion, they’re one of the better bands of their time. As for Chester Bennington, @Wekua said it best - he endured a lot, and despite what he went through he made some great music. It was a sad day when I heard that he passed away.
Alright moderators, do the honors and ban me. You gave me a second chance and I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t control my anger and prove I can act normal on here and prove I can act accordingly without lashing out at people.
What I just said was uncalled for and very insensitive about Chester Bennington.
I want to be clear, I’m not in a rage or anything. I do agree the comments about Chester were uncalled for, but if you’re willing to own up to it and move on, well, I’m personally content with that. People say and do things they shouldn’t; that’s part of being human, so I expect no perfection of you. You’ve twice now displayed a willingness to admit to shortcomings and to grow from them. That’s an ideal community member. I hope you can understand why I felt the need to speak up; we each have to defend our people, after all.
I don’t speak for the moderators, but given I was the one to comment on the matter, I felt it would be good of me to extend the olive branch and make peace. Thanks for being understanding.
I admit that I personally don’t struggle with the same things their music emphasizes that many others have connected to them through, but I do empathize with the depth of emotion their music conjures. That, and I just like myself some good rock.
A lot of my favorite LP songs are from Meteora, so for me it’s already one of the all-time greats.
Not sure of the temperature of this take at the moment, but I’m really loving all of the new songs they’re putting out now, too. Been on repeat for me the past few weeks. Great stuff.
Agreed, the album is shaping up nicely so far and I’m eager for the full release. Emily’s been getting a lot of flack from some people, but I feel she honors the work that preceded her while still adding her own touch to it, just like Chester did when he became co-lead after Mark Wakefield left the band. Same Linkin Park, just entering their next chapter, as they always do
