Here’s my version of Toa Chiara (which I’ll submit in the future Duckbrick’s contest).
As always, when I design a canon character, all the pieces (minus the mask) exist in the colors I’ve used.
I wanted to give her a lean, somehow feminine, silhouette, but also convey a sense of strength and agility. Taking inspiration from her bio, I imagined her like an huntress who’s armor is made of her trophies: you can spot pieces of Bohrok, Visorak and Rahkshi on her.
She has a gear on her back just for aesthetic.
This is the first time I make a Toa build that features a torso joint. The metru foot can be kept in place with a white rubber band that links the 1/2 bush with the joint.
A bonus shot f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶v̶i̶e̶ ̶p̶r̶e̶d̶a̶t̶o̶r̶ of Chiara using her mask’s power.
Here are some size comparisons:
with Gelu, for story reasons.
with @doni’s Orde and my Zaria
Neat! I like how this Chiara isn’t a Metru build, but has similar torso proportions. The added joints are nice as well!
Neat. Coincidentally has a good few similarities to my own MOC I plan on sharing closer to time for the competition- weirdly much similar even. Maybe a little tall, but not entirely unbelievable.
I really like this build. Not just the design decisions, but also the style; to me, it strikes the perfect balance of prefab Bionicle parts and more intricate custom Technic builds, while also not going overboard with either complexity or simplicity.
As for the aforementioned design decisions, I like the colour distribution and shaping, particularly the shaping of her legs. The Kohrak shield/gear combo on her back also looks really cool.
Very clean build! Love it.
Prelim voting are open
My entry is n°21 in BRACKET 3.
Good luck to everybody and may the best win.
On a side note, I’m waiting for the last pieces to arrive, then I’ll build her and post some irl photos.
Torso articulation:
Sadly, as you can see, one bricklink seller sent me a blue piece instead of a dark blue one (I get that you can confuse a pearl white and a white Rahkshi head, which he/she also did, but the two blues are miles apart).
The Volitak came in a lot with the filter chewed, so I cut it off completely and I used it as a placeholder since my only friend with a 3d printer is now on vacation.
- How have I not liked this before despite having a good impression?
- How did this not make it to the semi-finals? It’s better than half the current finalists!
1 I don’t know, but better late then never?
2 trying to be objective, I can imagine different reasons:
-Too many entries, so people get tired and after a while they start rushing to get to the end of voting (last entries in a bracket and the last brackets themself will suffer for this)
-For the same reason people wont vote in all the brackets (they say you have to do it for your vote to count but I can’t be sure they made those votes invalid)
-Once someone have an idea of how a character should look, they vote all the entries that fit that idea, hence why a lot of finalists look very similar to each other.
-Connected to the previous reasons, when they have a favorite entry, they vote for that and the rest at random.
-I believe the majority of people don’t examine entries (look at the builds/breakdown photos), they Just stop at the image in the entry page.
@D-E_GOISIS and @iylv , I’m trying to figure this out myself. I’ve started a discussion thread to ask for how others vote and to try and convince of these reasons.
How do people vote?
Step 1, start years ago.
Step 2, create an entrenched voter-base.
Step 3, bully the other MOCist who are better than you into not participating.
It’s all a popularity contest. People say they value originality, like @D-E_GOISIS ’s entry… but people are dishonest. Literally 4 identical builds and 9 identical kanohi.
Truth is, it’s always been a monopoly.
As a side note, could I borrow ideas from your Zaria? I’m 75% done, but I want to tweak of lot of things… that or I’m tempted to go the meme entry route & make Zaria a dummy thicc catboy.
While Step 3 is much rarer, it was obvious with the Orde contest for 1&2. I was hoping to get some sort of feedback from others to improve my Zaria myself, but if you want, I could message you.
I’m more of a 3D modeller than a MOCist. Most of the “advice” I’ld give you is shilling for my own custom kanohi, but this is D-E_Goisis’s thread.
As a side note, I love the whole invisible phasing design.
Feel free to take inspiration from it.
As a matter of fact, recently I’ve seen some really cool Zaria’s MOCs and I was thinking about making a V.2 of my design.
Really love your staff.
The leg design is a little too greebly to take wholesale, but I might draw heavy inspiration for that.
Also, if you’re doing a V2, will you consider including my kanohi? Stud.io files in the download link.
This is why presentation always matters, friend!
First impressions are more important than they seem
