Discussion: RP Etiquette

Biggest problem I’ve encountered is someone who took any actions against their character as deeply personal attacks, and used that to start fights ooc. It’s not like people were against them in character for no reason, but they always acted like that was the case

I’ve seen that before, I find it happens when someone gets way too invested in a character(s) and thinks the world of that character.

As for me I have a small nitpick about the signups.
I feel this;

Name:Bill Nye
Title: The science guy
Example: Example
Example: Example
Example: Example
Bio: Does a science show thing and as a rock on song.

should be this;

**Name:**Bill Nye

Title: The science guy

Example: Example

Example: Example

Example: Example

Bio: Does a science show thing and as a rock on song.

as this is much easier for me at least to read.

Oh yeah I feel you there. Adding just the bold makes a world of difference

I hate characters that are literally invincible! Like you can’t attack this one guy!

You can, though public opinion will soon go after you.

I don’t mean autohit I mean autododge which is incredibly annoying

Also meta gaming is really common, like uncomfortably

to add to formatting a Sign Up
it doesn’t have to be exactly how I formatted it.
For Example, once could format the sheet, like I formatted Skir Desh.

though the requirements of the RP do add to this.

If it isn’t an attack it isn’t autohitting. Pickpocketing qualifies as an attack.[quote=“Chronicler, post:6, topic:49183”]
Don’t meta game. It’s bad.

Listen to Cronk on this, he’s right[quote=“Chronicler, post:6, topic:49183”]
Also you can solve auto-hitting by DnD-styled dice rolls.

Nearly all of the RPs here don’t function at all like DnD. This would be a rather forced system on what’s essentially a storytelling format, not a tabletop.[quote=“Runa, post:8, topic:49183”]
Or, say a character has a secret identity, listed in signups, that they have hidden really well IC, and some person they’ve never met before comes up and calls them out as [insert real name here].

One of the things that irritates me a bit (at least on this site) is the “I’ve got a character that nobody can know the essentials of except the GM OOooooooOOOooooohhh” because that means the author is attempting to be way past cool with some slick character design, and honestly, it isn’t cool. I’m completely fine with secretive information but if it’s so special that nobody can know it isn’t really worth it.[quote=“TheOnlyGuyWhoLikesMistika, post:12, topic:49183”]

Autohitting, autododging, and godmodding are some of the things that plague the RPs on this site the most. Every RP I’ve browsed on the site (and I look at almost all of them, especially the insanely busy ones) has a gratuitous amount of meta gaming somewhere in between. Y’all really need to cease, it’s making some of the RPs unplayable, especially if the GM is the one doing it.

I feel attacked

I mean, for example, superheroes. In general, no one is really going to know who is actually behind the mask. Then, someone comes in and is like “Oh, Superheroboy, or should I say, JOHN DOE!” Or something like that. Not like dark and brooding edgi guy “seeeeeecrets.”

Yet it is like that, granted I did that with Kyro but still! I only did it as a parody

Half the things I did starting out when I was first role-playing… Honestly kinda annoyed me. I used to do a stupid thing where I would try to create a character plot hook and… it basically was left unexplored. And when it was explored I basically did everything without a plan. and that’s how Symphony was created./s

I kind of do the same thing. I find that if I don’t have a set goal in mind for a character, then I usually end up losing interest pretty quickly. And that goal can even be as specific as a certain scene or conversation that want to play out, then kind of craft their story around that. Though one should always be prepared for things not to go as planned.

My biggest issue is I need to remebr this isn’t Fire Emblem: Awakening, and not every likes romance in their RP’s.

I’m serious, when I started Salvation, my mind was basically, “Ships, ships everywhere!”, and I was unconsciously pairing everyone with everyone. I have since dialed that back, (or at least tried). Except in one instance. (Quit draggin your feet Blight, ya big lug! :stuck_out_tongue:)

Anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me?

Every fanbase has that part to it: the people who seem to only try to pair characters for reasons that are more crazy than the last (i.e: MLP, RWBY and Digimon). Everyone enjoys stuff differently and the only thing I ask when interacting with shippers is that they respect my opinions and views while I try to do the same, even if we disagree.

Yeah… for Fire Emblem: Awakening, it stems mostly the fact that you can pair everyone of the same generation together (assuming they are of opposite genders. Fates loosens this a bit), that lends to this mindset of, “Everyone’s an option!” Which obviously isn’t true in RP’s. That’s just the way Awakening and Fates were made. They’re basically a turn-based strategy games with built-in dating simulator.

Agreed, RWBY’s shipping scene is crazy. Though they have some of the best ship names though. (nuts and dolts is hilarious ship name to me)

best ship name? Yes. Best ship? No that’s WhiteRose.

Anyways, if you’re gonna ship characters, only do relationships involving at least one of your characters. And if it does include a character other that one of your own, talk it over with their player first.

And please, for the love of Mata Nui, don’t rush it. Rushed romance just doesn’t work out well.

A rushed romance might lead to a moment where they separate and kinda not get back for the better

An attempt of to do that with my characters would lead to instant bloodshed and carnage.
