Elrain, now a toa of shadow, was an av-matoram mask maker from an unnamed island in the matoran universe that was ruled by a Makuta. It was a considerably well developed society with tall buildings, factories and more. However, their Makuta was obsessed with war machines and was an oppressive leader. He used is rahkshi army to oppress his people, but they weren’t discontented, yet. But one day, the oppression became worse. Everyone was forced to do additional shifts in the factories, the weapons they were making became more ambitious, and more dangerous. More matoran started dying, and while the red star kept reviving them, it disheartened everyone. Everyone, that is, except for six brave matoran: Vronik an av-matoran, Bordak a po-matoran, Krink a ko-matoran, Onak an onu-matoran, Skyden a le-matoran, and Skyla a ga-matoran. You may wonder what this has to do with Elrain, but don’t worry, it wouldn’t be a Bionicle story if it wasn’t super complicated. Anyway, these six matoran formed a rebellion against Makuta, but no matter what they did, they couldn’t overthrow him eith only six. They tried to recruit more matoran, but they would either refuse to join because they were afraid, or get caught very quickly. It was like Makuta was toying with them (because he was). Eventually, Makuta got tired of the games, and decided to play on final trick to ruin the rebellion forever. He captured the six matoran, and killed Vronik, their leader, in front of everyone on the island to assert his dominance and break the spirits of any remaining rebels. Then ge tossed the rest into a jail and waited for Vronik to be sent back down from the red star. As Makuta suspected, the first thing Vronik tried to do was rescue his rebel friends, and when he did, Makuta sprung his trap. When Vronik got to the cell where his friends were held, the floor collapsed beneath them and and they were trapped beneath a pile of rubble. But Makuta was unaware of the catacombs beneath the island, or what they contained. When the rebels finally picked themselves out of the rubble, they found themselves in these catacombs, and they were astonished by what they saw. There were hundreds of glowing crystals of all shapes, sizes and colors. But one crystal in particular caught their eyes; a large round crystal that kind of looked like a table. It whispered to them, but they were unable to make put what it said, and they were scared. Finally, after hours of indecision, Skyden’s curiosity got the better of him and he touched the rock. When he did, it sent a wave of toa power that knocked them off their feet and turned the into toa! Now they were strong enough to defeat Makuta.

Finally they were able to start the rebellion they wanted, and they were able to defeat Makuta by trapping him in protodermis. Five of the toa wished to travel and find more islands to liberate, but Vronik decided to stay, just in case Makuta every escaped his prison. After thousands of years of no sign of Makuta escaping, and the fact that all of his war machines had been destroyed or repurposed, Vronik became content and gave up his toa power to the crystal he had gotten it from and became a turaga.

But Vronik hadn’t killed all of the Rahkshi, for there was a group of them that had hidden, and they were led by s shadow Kraata. The Rahkshi were planning a way to break out there master and had been doing so slowly over the last thousand years or so, and finally Makuta was free, and he had a plan to take back the island. He had his Rahkshi reveal themselves and attack the city. They kept reading the city, and Vronik, being a turaga, couldn’t stop them. But two matoran, an av-matoran mask maker named Elrain and a ta-matoran explorer named Fenrith, who had been imprisoned during the original rebellion, wanted to fight against the rahkshi menace, so Vronik took the to the crystal that he had given his toa power to and they became toa! They defeated the rahkshi exoskeletons, however they didn’t kill the shadow Kraata (as they didn’t know how Rahkshi worked). Vronik new that they would only attack on orders from Makuta, so they went to the chamber where Makuta had been trapped in protodermis, but he had already escaped. Elrain and Fenrith spent the next few weeks searching for makuta, and when they finally found him, he was ready for them. He had studied how they fought and new that, while Fenrith was wise and smart, Elrain was impulsive. And do when she charged at him, the shadow kraata corrupted her mask and Makuta took control of her. He used her to kill Fenrith, who managed to cut of her arm before dying. So she took his arm and his sword. The Makuta made her kill Vronik, and then there was no one left yo stop Makuta. Makuta ruled for years through Elrain, making her do horrible things and draining her of her light, so that now she was a toa of shadow. He also made sure that she was aware of every horrible thing she did. But then, something unexpected happened. The other toa from Vronik’s team, and a toa of fire, came to visit their old friend and recruit him to help the fight. What they found instead shocked them. They went to confront Elrain, thinking that she had betrayed the toa code, they discovered the truth. The six toa managed to uncorrupt Elrain’s mask and tried to get her to help them defeat Makuta, but she had gone insane because of everything she had done and gone through, and she attacked them. Makuta tried to just let the kill each other, but Elrain sought him out and attacked him. Soon it became a three way battle with everyone fight everyone, and Elrain finally won by using a nova blast, killing all living things on the island. It also cracked her Kanohi Kadin and she was unable to get off the island. During this time that she was stuck on the island she was able to reflect on what she had done and repair the damage she had suffered during the battle.

Eventually, after the fall of Teridax, Elrain regained her sanity from her reflections during her time alone on the island and was able to repair her mask. She met a toa of the green during her travels, and they decided to travel together, starting the formation of the toa falment.
Elrain wears the Kanohi Kadin, the great mask of flight, and wields a zamor sphere launching staff and a rhotuka launching sword. She also has a zamor sphere pouch in her hip for easy access. Her rhotuka power is power drain, it latches on to its target and drains their energy to the point of exhaustion and siphones that energy to Elrain.
