Some Old Makuta MOCs: Dybbuk, Minyak, and Consul R (now with a name!)

Several years ago, I made what I would consider my three favorite Makuta MOCs: Dybbuk, Minyak, and “Consul R,” all of which received board posts with dedicated lore in 2022. I’m not entirely sure if R’s post still holds up, but Dybbuk and Minyak’s definitely does. In any case, these three remain some of my favorite MOCs to this day, even if they’re relatively simple builds, and I’m proud to have them standing on my shelf.

Makuta Dybbuk

Not much has changed about Dybbuk since his debut, but there is one small but significant change I’ve made to his lore. I originally created this character to be the Makuta that was killed by Toa Zaria, hence his name (a dybbuk is a malicious spirit from Jewish mythology, and the name derives from the Hebrew word meaning “to cling,” of course referencing the guilt that clung to Zaria after the fact). However, following conversations with a friend, I’ve now decided that Dybbuk was in fact the second Makuta to die at Zaria’s hands. The first was Noraxa, whose death prompted Dybbuk to investigate the matter himself.

As a result, the rumors of Zaria being a murderer and his own guilt over his actions suddenly carry more weight. After all, one is an anomaly, two is a trend…

Makuta Minyak

Not much to report on Minyak either, except that it took me a shockingly long time to part him out for some reason. Despite designing him not long after Dybbuk, it took me until 2024 to finally complete him. The mask in particular was the very last thing I bought from Shapeways before it went bankrupt (fun fact: the axle is slightly too big, and I’m afraid that if I ever pull the mask off that axle will completely snap).

“Consul R”

And now the very reason I made this post in the first place. I’m probably gonna go back and rewrite R’s lore for a multitude of reasons, the biggest of which is that, when I first designed her, she had nothing to do with Dybbuk; if I recall correctly, it was only after I’d built Minyak irl that I realized that the three of them look pretty good together and could probably work well as some sort of team.

But now let’s get to what the title of the post promised:

Once I began teaming her up with Dybbuk and Minyak, I knew that I had to follow the rule the former set and pull her name from some demons and spirits from various mythologies and cultures. As such, I’ve decided to name her Ronove. I’m not changing the lore about her not using this name in public–to her, being addressed by a given name implies a sense of familiarity and equality, traits she does not wish to share with her subjects–but I would like to try to not make her a total rip-off of the Consul R from Xenoblade 3, and I think giving my Consul R a name is a step in the right direction.

Gonna be honest here, I don’t know how the second compulsory murder of a Makuta is more guilt-inducing than the first one, especially since Dybbuk would have been a direct threat to Zaria’s getting exposed and being held accountable for his actions.

Regardless, the custom mask on Minyak is nice, and the color schemes slap. Ronove’s bright red standing out so intensely actually works better than I thought it would’ve. Nice work!

Admittedly the idea only works because of the strange sense of morality seen in Bionicle, particularly regarding the Toa Code. My logic here is that after killing the first Makuta, it would be easier to write off. Perhaps it was a fluke of some kind, or the Matoran heard incorrectly. But once the second Makuta was killed, suddenly the idea that Zaria made a habit out of murdering his enemies seemed a little bit more plausible.

Minyak’s mask is Galva’s Mask of Power Scream (obviously not called that in my lore, that’s such a silly power to give to a mask) that was custom painted by me.

I love how these Makuta look in real life! The Metru feet work so well to give texture to Ronove’s body, and the Bohrok shield on her chest works equally well for the same. The Vladek mask looks great! I also admire the parallels between Dybbuk and Minyak’s designs, which implicitly reinforce their rivalry.

I’m going to disagree with Ghid about Dybbuk’s lore–I like the new version. Also, when I saw the name Dybbuk, all I could think of was the D&D monster…

The change in the lore is pretty much only there because the friend in question had already inducted Noraxa into his continuity (this was 2023 give or take), so this compromise was the only way to reconcile the differences. I think it ended up working for the best.

Side note: D&D had absolutely zero influence on Dybbuk’s name when I created him. I knew absolutely nothing about the game until 2025 and have already lost most of my interest in it.

I figured, but I thought it was still interesting.

How’d you get that Knights Kingdom mask attached on Consul R? Doesn’t look like it uses the standard KK head, is it a custom mask?

It uses a couple of these modified plates and some half-pins on a G2 head.
